Looks like the Nexus One will not be getting ICS because the "hardware is too old":

Android upgrade for Google Nexus S ‘in weeks’ - Telegraph

However, the Nexus S is getting ICS despite it sharing 512MB RAM and a 1GHz processor (albeit a different type) with the N1.

This has me thinking: How long will Google update the Galaxy Nexus for?
Hopefully it extends beyond just Jellybean but I'm a little concerned that they will no longer be supporting THEIR OWN Nexus One.

Despite the fact that they said at Google I/O earlier in the year that all devices will be supported for 18 months, I'm hoping they were referring to their partners' (OEMs') devices rather than their Nexus line.

On a positive note, the article also mentions that Google is confident that ICS is "buttersilk smooth" despite reports out of Hong Kong that the device was laggy; they put that down to a faulty device.

Cheers peeps:)

I caught up on all the posts that I missed. But I seen Steven said he might have a new morsel of info. Did I miss it or has the source not gotten back to him yet. I went back several times but it is late and Im tired so I could have skimmed it.

Check out the end when the guy flips the lights on and off, looks like it has trouble focusing back in. What do ya think thats all about. I dont think Ill be taking a video while flipping lights on and off anyway.

I think it focused quite quick.

Well, the Nexus One is two years old and got two major OS revisions (along with all of the small incremental ones), but I suspect the Nexus S will remain supported longer than the Nexus One. The N1 had its share of mediocre/bad hardware, including a touchscreen whose touch capabilities were mediocre (it supported two fingers maximum, and not very well), a graphics processor that was FAR behind the Hummingbird processor in the Nexus S (even for its generation, it wasn't very good), and only 512mb of onboard storage. Given ICS' focus on a more usable touch environment, its heavy reliance on graphics acceleration and its overhaul of higher resolution graphics, those three issues alone might be enough to kill it.

I'd rather Google produce a polished, next-generation OS than cripple it for backwards compatibility.

Just a "thought" how does the 24 of "November rain" sounds??? Only 4 weeks away from xmas meaning there will be only 1 ICS phone on market to buy for xmass gift.

You know me or not, just a thought ;)

Thanks for the info. Makes sense now. So it looks like it will be supported for at least 2 years, at which time we'll be buying the Nexus V made by Nokia...I can dream about that hardware can't I?:D

Imagine a bigger version of that with Android. Man panties...bunch...you know the drill.:p

Microsoft owns Nokia, so that's a pretty big dream, lol.

The bezels on the top and bottom are huge on that thing. We're finally getting to the point where the majority of the phone is the screen. That thing is a big step backwards.

I'd say it's a safe assumption that you'll get 2 years of updates. It could easily be more, though, because the Nexus One was actually hampered by inadequate hardware. Not just old hardware, but hardware that has actual hard limitations. Like the two-point-only touchscreen, that kinda sucked for multitouch - with today's 10-finger touchscreens, you really don't have a future limitation with the amount of touch gestures. Or the 512mb of onboard storage - the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S would only need to modify their partition scheme to allocate more storage to the OS or to app data, so again, no hard limit.

I don't think MS owns Nokia, but I know what you mean (it has a stranglehold on its future). Unfortunately we'll never see a Nokia Android device. Oh, and apart from the large bezel, seriously, the hardware is to die for IMHO.

More on topic, does anyone think it's suspicious that no non-US retailer has mentioned the 32GB version, including Clove UK, who confirmed that it was not coming to the UK. This, to me, means one of two things:

1) We're going to get a SGS2-like saga where the promised 32GB version is never released.
2) Only Verizon will get the 32GB version while the HSPA+ version lags behind at 16GB.

For alla yalls' sake I hope its the latter if a HSPA+ 32GB version never comes to fruition.

There are TWO pre-order auctions on eBay for Gnex on Verizon and both of them list the memory as 1GB RAM / 32GB memory! I NEED that memory!

Sadly, they also list the battery as 1750MAh, so let's hope that's gonna change. But then, ICS could be so optimized that it may not matter that much...
