Thought I would correct this before people try this and get stuck with a data plan on an extra line they can't cancel. VZW requires you to sign a two year contract for both the line AND the data plan attached to it, meaning putting a dumb phone on thats line won't get you out of the data plan.

What you "supposedly" can do is. IF you OWN a dumb phone. Take it to the store and activate it on a new line. THEN use that lines upgrade on the main line to get the phone. :)

First of all, congrats to all you VZW guys, which seems to be most of you, for getting the exclusive on the GN. I'm sure you're like me and wish we all could've gotten it at the same time, but with T-mo's uncertain future and the fact that it looks like Verizon has gone with the marketing strategy of...

VZW = Varsity version of data, voice, & phones

everyone else = JV version of data, voice, & phones, albeit some better then others...

I do understand it is a business, not T-ball where you don't keep score and everyone gets a trophy. Having coached High School Baseball here in Oklahoma for 15 years, I understand this. That being said, congrats again!!!!

Unfortunately I'm going under the assumption that T-mo will not get GN until 2012, I don't think I can wait that long, also, not sure it's worth waiting that long for. If we're talking 30 day exclusive, then I'll wait it out.

Now what I need help on is figuring out whether I should get T-mo Galaxy S2, or try to wait out GN. I have done a lot of research today and I'm coming to the assumption that when I take off my Nexus blinders, the T-mo GS2 is a pretty sweet phone. The two main differences to me seem to be ICS & HDscreen. I actually hear the screen on the GS2 is sweet, because of the SA+, even if it is only 800x480, grrrrrr, same as my N1. I'm gonna try to wait until people start getting the Nexus in their hands to hear some comparisons of non HD SA+ screens vs SA HD screens.

So if you guys find any links to such comparisons or have any personal experience please PM me or let me know on here. Also, I'd love any of you guys opinion on what you would do if in my situation, I'm a guy who wants to keep his phone for two years before getting a new one.

thanks,
26

I believe the only time the data plan is a contract is if you have a tablet (so, no actual phone service contract). I know there is an ETF for my LTE Tab is if cancel data. So maybe that's what's confusing people?

No comparisons yet. In your place I'd at least give it a couple weeks after the GN is released, I think news on other carriers will start dribbling out then...

I am sorry, but this is not true. I just did this to get my wife's phone. The data plan is a feature, not a part of the service. You can add/remove features to your hearts desire, as long as the phone on the line doesn't require it. So by switching a dumbphone to that line, you are removing the requirement for the data plan, and can remove it without affecting your contract.

Then I was either A) lied to by the rep, B) they were just making stuff up and misinformed me, or C) they just didn't want to deal with it because about 3 months ago I was flat out told this wasn't allowed for the reasons I stated

They were probably misinformed. In the thread about this in this forum someone who works at VZW confirmed that if you switch a line to a dumb phone you can drop the data at no charge.

if you sign a two contact on a phone with a data plan you cannot cancel the data plan. you have to cancel everything (and pay ETF) or keep the data.

People who work at VZW seem to disagree with you. Check the thread in this forum on the same topic.

I am sorry to hear that you were told wrongly by a VZW employee, cause yeah I just did this a month ago to get my wife a Droid 3.

Girlfriends sister breaks her blackberry, goes to verizon wireless store to replace the phone. Contract wasnt up and didn't have insurance on the phone so went with the cost effective method and got dumbphone. Verizon wireless employee proceeds to remove unlimited data plan that was attached. Girlfriend pissed becuase she didnt want unlimited data removed (they are on a family plan), and won't be able to get it back.

True story.

Sounds like miscommunication/misunderstanding. As long as you have a data capable phone, you must keep data on that line. If you put a "feature phone" on that line, you can remove the data feature.

If I was in your situation I would wait a little also. But also know the SGII is an excellent phone. I would go on record as saying this is the best Android phone to date and the fastest android phone. I was hoping VZ get this phone, but the GNEX is the phone we are getting. So I'm still happy and again wait and see if any info comes out. But u can order the international GNEX to use on T-Mobile.

yeah, but I had to sign on for two year contract to avoid big overage fees in August, so I'm stuck for next two years anyway, hence, since I'm due an update on nov 10, I would like to use it. I was considering using my upgrade to get SG2 then and selling it on ebay for 600, but I have never sold a thing online in my life, and I'm a little apprehensive, plus with the GN coming out, it may be a hard sell at that price, and that's what I'd would need to get out of it. Appreciate the help though.

Congrats, now that killer wait after you have paid but before you get it... Every day goes so slow... I ordered the Incredible during the shipping delay, waited over 3 weeks. Was awful

The only plus about that delay was finding this forum and the total of $75 in credits/gift cards from vzw's debacle

It might be their "next generation" fortified glass and they just haven't come up with a name for it yet. Maybe?

I agree with this. Or it's like the generic brand that they know is good but aren't going to name it something awesome.

The problem with sgs 2 is no ics. I am not going to upgrade my phone till there is an phone with ics on it otb. By the time sgs2 gets ics there will be better phone out that is guaranteed
