To jump into the Screen size debate from last night :)

for those saying bigger is always better. Only to a point...

I think the GN is actually pushing that limit very hard. I'm a guy and have fairly large hands, so its not a issue for me but for many it will be.

If you look through the Dinc. forums there's actually a fair number of people who think 4.3" is too big. That number will grow the bigger the phone gets.

Without seeing the RAZR and GN next to each other I can't say. But I could EASILY see us being at the point where people start choosing the "smaller" phone...

As far as screen size goes, I could go even bigger. I have big hands though. The notion now is that you have to have a smart phone and a tablet. I don't have a tablet yet. I have a desktop computer for home and a smartphone for away. If the screen were big enough on my phone, I'd never need a tablet.

I would still have both. I like my Galaxy Tab 10.1 for heavy typing stuff that is just a pain on my phone, and I don't think they could make a phone big enough for that, but still small enough for me to want to carry it around all the time.

My brother-in-law and I both have Droid X phones. He got his first and jokingly called it his "pop tart" because of how big it is. I didn't think I'd get used to it, but to me, the Droid X's screen is perfect for its intended use... email, web surfing, games, etc. That's why I think I'll have no problems getting used to the 4.65" screen on the Galaxy Nexus. :D

Good morning all!

We are one day closer to having this critter in our hands! :D

I hope everyone has a great day leading into the Halloween weekend.. who knows, maybe we'll get lucky and someone will toss us a bone or little nugget of information!

Can you tell I have my positive hat on?

Agreed. I actually upgraded to the DX from the Incredible after my husband got the DX and I got a terrible case of screen envy. :D

Yeah my Droid X was a huge jump from my Droid Eris, as far as screen size is concerned. My wife has an iPhone 4 and while the display is sharp and clear, it would definitely be a "downgrade" in screensize, compared to what I have now.

I need to find one of those "House Divided" bumper stickers I see around here (for example, one side has an ECU Pirate and the other side has UNC Tarheels), except it would the Android/Apple logos. :D Most people would look at it and go, "huh?" like they do with most other decals I have on the back of my car.

Not here...we're an ALL Android house. Although, I've tried to talk my husband into an iPhone simply because he's been sprayed with technology repellent and the Android is often a little too advanced for him. :p

And many of those same people are now carrying Droid X, etc. with 4.3" screens. Or they are looking to a new phone with a bigger screen because they now feel the 3.7" is kinda small. I was one of those saying 4.3" was too big back in that thread and now I do feel that the 3.7" is on the small side. Point is opinions change and what we're using our phones to do now really is dictating bigger screens. Actually I think talking on our phones is probably one of the least concerns people have now. That would be where I'd be concerned about a phone being too big (too wide would really be the issue) but since it's one of the least uses I'll have for the phone it's lowest on my concerns.

I agree with this personally. I used to think 3.7" was just right, but after playing with the GF's Nexus S I realize how much the smaller screen affects my text/input accuracy. Got my hands on a SGS2 the other day and yeah, it's big, but totally manageable.

Morning. All caught up. What I understand from last night's banter is:

1. The screen is too big
2. The screen is took blurry for those times you use a magnifying glass.

Steven shakes his head. ;)

I tried talking my wife into an Android-powered phone but she just wasn't interested. She went from a Moto Q (my recommendation and my mistake... didn't realize what a POS Windows Mobile was), to a Blackberry Storm (went through three of them due to hardware problems), to her current iPhone 4. I told her, "If you want customization and a more powerful interface, go with the Android. If you want a jump-in-and-use-it interface and don't care about customization, go with an iPhone." So she went with an iPhone and she's VERY happy, which is all that matters. We tease each other constantly about "my little Androids" or her "Sheep phone" so it's all good.

We're just techno-gadget geeks... in one house, we have a Droid X, iPhone 4, iPad 2, and Asus Transformer. My desktop and her laptop are awlful lonely since they rarely get used anymore. It's an expensive habit!

This is a key point. When I got my DX, I had looked at the Dinc, read reviews, and saw it had a great screen but questionable battery life. It wasn't until I was in the store and had both in hand I went final on the DX. The decider was overall look of the phone. I suspect there will be a lot of folks who make their final choice based on how cool the phone looks, can they fit it in their hand or pocket, things like that. The in store displays aren't really going to tell you squat about how good the call quality is, or if the screen is massively better (or go through the pictures taken on the in store phone?), or any real performance.

Does anyone know how the various android models have sold? Its that data even available publicly?

Last night I was wandering through a local mall when I happened upon a BestBuy Mobile store. Seeing several phones on display I dragged my lovely and talented wife into the store to check them out. Because she's fond of me, she protested very little.

I focused on the Samsung phones for obvious reasons. Their screens certainly have extremely saturated colors. With TouchWiz, they look too cartoonish though. I was duped by one which had the crappy sticker on instead of a working display, so close were the Wiz phones to cartoons.

I care not, for I am interested in a Galaxy Nexus which has no such abomination!

I then sauntered over to the Nexus S to see what the big fuss with the curved screen was all about. I had to peer down it's long axis to even see the curve. If the GNex has a similar curve, it's a non-issue, non-feature. I couldn't see the point.

The poor automaton working there greeted me at this point and asked if I needed help. Remembering chicks dig tech nerds, I turned to her and said something designed to impress:

"I'm just checking out the Samsung phones because I'm considering a Galaxy Nexus!"

Her stunned silence and vacant stare could only have been caused by one of three possibilities:

  1. She was enamored with my long locks and was rendered speechless.
  2. She was overwhelmed by my technical foresight and yearned for me so deeply she was struck dumb.
  3. She hated her job, was sick of geeks and felt slightly nauseous.

My wife felt it was #3 but I know better!

Thanks Gapi. Now this begs the question of why? Why did Sammy put a subpar screen into such a ground-breaking device? I know, I know. Yes, it's a great phone. I'll be getting it as fast as I can and like a magic trick, I bet all of this can be explained away in a debate. I just can't understand why the best wouldn't have been thrown at this device. Does this shorten the amount of time I'll own it or even mean that I'll notice. Maybe at first, but I'll get used to the display and love it. It's just my opinion that a true GAME CHANGER is a phone that leaves you wowed with every spec on the phone. That is all.

The only thing I imagine is battery life and its an improved version of said.

I did think about it, but I have a calculator of almost exactly the same dimensions, and while it looks ok in my ape like hands, it's just too large in the pocket, ooohh eerrrrr missus. Also, if I pulled the Note out in a bar with my friends there would be no end of abuse.

"Hey Charlie, King Kong called, he wants his phone back", etc, etc.

She likes walking like John Wayne.

Now you have to apologise to my housemates who I just woke up with my over the top laughter; they have an exam early tomorrow (its currently 12.30am in Melbourne):D

She might have just done the "dog watching a clock" and had no clue what you were talking about. I had the exact same experience at Staples yesterday, where the poor sales girl didn't realize I was looking up phone info and comparing a Droid Bionic with my DX. She went on and on about the android system allowed true multitasking...

Just got to be polite and walk away.

My wife had a iphone 3GS, and complained incessantly about it. When she dropped it in a toilet (an accident, she swears), got her a good deal on an at&t captivate which was the best at&t had at the time.

Turns out she complains incessantly about android phones too. It doesn't help that the captivate is a piece of junk. The difference is every time she gets fed up with it, I have to throw some other rom on there to tide her over a few weeks. All I really accomplish is changing which aspects of the phone she complains about.

I can't wait for her to finish her contract, and go back to Iphones (preferably on Verizon). I might still have to listen to the complaining, but at least I won't have to do anything about it :)

So I am going to bring up a point on the whole Razr and GNex sales at VZW. They will advertise the Razr phone more heavily and will sell more but when a person hears about the Razr and think well its time for a new phone lets go take a look at phones and are not quite set on what phone they want to buy will ask questions. Pretty much all the sales guys are going to brag about the 4.0 ICS on the GNex. Those sales guys are not smart enough to really know all about the phones they sell. They know the difference between 2.3 Gingerbread and 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. 4.0>2.3 even if the sales guys know nothing about what it all brings.

3.7 to 4.65 *is* quite the jump. Just thinking about it makes me worry a little. I have small hands :S

I agree! Get on over to a place that carries the GSII and check it out firsthand, the GNex will be slightly bigger than that. I think I can live with it!

I agree. It was an adjustment going from the MotoDroid to Charge. But I'd gotten on the smart phone train with a Treo 650, and those were pretty beastly, so I would up really liking the bigger size. I think the Gnex will be the biggest that is comfortable in my small hands. The Note sounds awesome, but it would probably just be too big for me - especially since I have a tablet.

You may be giving them more credit than they deserve. In my experience, at least with the VZW stores in my area, they wouldn't know Ice Cream Sandwich on the phone from a real Ice Cream Sandwich from the freezer section of the local grocery store.
