Root Mobile data

Ok folks, I wanted to share this old trick for battery life because I sort of forgot about it. Well I didn't forget about it, I just stopped using it as much.
If you have one of the newer roms with the dropdown settings menu in the notification bar this is really easy. If not add a mobile data toggle widget to your homescreen.

KEEP MOBILE DATA TURNED OFF.

Only turn it on when you check your emails or surf the web, etc. Turn it back off once done. This saves a s&!t ton of battery. I'm over 9 hours with 75% left. Almost 2 hours awake time and over an hour of calls. Not to mention forum parousing.

Turning mobile data off when you don't need it will increase your battery life substantially. You still get calls and standard text messages, mms messages won't download of course, but you'll get the text that It's there. Also don't pay attention when it says mobile data takes a little while to turn back on....WRONG! It's connected almost instantly. Turn it on, hit your browser and its loading right now. ;)

Had to post this, just started using it again, and I forgot how good it works. Enjoy!

:D

No offense granite, but why then have a smart phone?:p:confused: If you have to turn data off just to conserve battery power and then turn it it back on to sync data, what a pain, imo!! You might just use more power syncing when you turn data back on.

Now, I can understand if your out and about for a looooong period of time without access to a charger or an extra battery OR your in an area with a horrible signal but otherwise what's the point of turning off data. I got pissed off at the Sprint tech who told me to this when I went to get my Hero serviced long ago. Like I said to him, then what's the point of having a smart phone if I have to turn data on to sync emails, gmails, weather data, twitter, facebook.......;) But, that's just me:)

But if it saves the battery, I can understand:D

If im in a class where I know i have no reception ill turn on airplane mode, but I dont play with data settings.

you can also achieve this without having to manually press a toggle by setting up a couple tasker profiles with screen on/off events and turn on/off mobile data contexts. I do something similar with wimax

you can also even set it up to turn on a few minutes every couple hours if you want it to keep fairly up to date

Juice defender also does the timed data on/off. ;)
I was playing around today and said to myself: self, why don't you just go off the grid for a hot minute and see what you actually "miss". I got great results with the battery. I also missed 3 nasty emails about late time sheets for my subordinates due to the holiday. :(
So Andy, you're right on the what's the point of turning it off. :)
If I was on a trip or in a bad reception area this method would save my juice. :D

+100! This is huge for saving battery. Started doing this when I first started with MIUI (had the awesome drop down notif bar), I have stopped a bit lately, but I've been around my charger lately, so that's why. It's a great tip that IMO should be added to (one of) the guides.

Great little thing that can save a ton of battery juice.
