***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

Now with NFC, this all becomes much simpler. Everyone with NFC on their phone can just swipe their phone with the GTV or a phone that has joined the game and the app will be automatically downloaded and then the person will be added to the game once the install is complete. Everything is easy and relatively painless... at least in concept

Are you familiar with the data speeds over NFC? I'm not, but I'm guessing it would be more than a swipe. Though I suppose a purpose-build device with NFC could also have WiFi, where NFC could initiate the download and the rest could be completed OTA.

Yes, the NFC only initiates the sync. It gives both parties the "address" to exchange data with a faster protocol. This is how the built in sharing works with ICS. Anything that is shared between two phones isn't passed through NFC. NFC either passes an URL or possible initiates a bluetooth or wifi transfer protocol.

Edit: Yes I am somewhat familiar with NFC. The transfer rate is pretty slow, but again, all you are doing is arranging another way of getting data from one place to another.

Yes indeed. Here's the keys. Make sure ya take care of her while we're in our sleep deprived comas. Lol have fun with the speculation on the best buy ad. Hoping to wake up to 50k and best buy having a phone waiting for me. Night guys :)

Well you guys were talking heavy NFC and I don't really know much about it other than my Rezound won't have it. Unless they really are retrofittable, as suggested by their placement in the battery. Odd concept that.

I think the battery only supports the antenna, which is a series of loops like those square, peel-off anti-theft tags you'll sometimes see on retail merchandise. The nuts and bolts of the NFC are contained on the phone's circuit board.

...which of course means more expensive replacement batteries. :)

Ah, ok. I thought I remembered reading that NFC account identification was intended to be transportable (beyond the phone itself), so maybe that goes along w/the antenna.

i noticed that when i the VZW site if u search for nexus prime it brings you directly to the sign up page even tho it says galaxy nexus

Yeah, it's weird. Search for...

... "Galaxy" gets you nothing but current Samsung Galaxy devices,
... "Nexus" gets you a GNex banner ad + Droid devices,
... "Prime" gets you the GNex sign-up screen.

Sounds like Verizon's web folks are as in the dark as we are.

I don't know, because what if you're a battery swapper?

Edit: Oh, check me out, I'm a "Member" now. Woot! (My boss is going to kill me.)

Hopefully Best Buy will start selling the GN today, for Verizon customers. I am waiting on the GSM version however. I've been tempted to order online at the current "premium prices", but waiting for a possible chance to buy it locally maybe at a lower price. Anyone care to guess how long the Verizon "exclusive" will last?

I Just hope it pops up on VZW website sometime soon....

So here's a thread on XDA that indicates the GNex is going to use a similar setup to what was on the Nexus S, with the NFC chip on the circuit board. The difference is the Nexus S antenna was on the battery door, while this one will be contained on the battery. (post #22)

I know it's not definitive, but it makes sense.

[Q] Why does it say Near Field Communication on the battery? - Page 3 - xda-developers

I've had family in town for the holidays so I haven't been on line that much this week. That said, I'm not sure if this has been posted or not.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus unboxing video - YouTube

It is a pretty long video, but the interesting thing is that it shows adobe flash support towards the end. So it looks like flash is here for ICS and the Nexus now.

Sorry OTD, I ninja'd you by about 3 days...

But it is good to watch again and again. :)
