***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

I'm going to officially become a Verizon customer today, I have decided to rent an R-phone because the double data & regional minutes deal they have going here in Oklahoma is to good to take a chance at missing. I'm really excited about the data speeds and great call coverage in my area. Where I live I get all kinds of dropped calls and data speeds of 50 kbps to a whopping 300kbps on T-mobile. I didn't want to have to pay the $35 dollar restocking fee, but It is making me nervous that theses deals will all of a sudden change. So which R phone should I get???? I'm thinking Razor since it seems like the toughest out of the two. All I care about is the thing staying in shape to where I can return it in a week or two.

BTW I may not even use it, may use wife's new 4S until gnex comes out....scared to death of scratching R-phone and being stuck with it.

As I am interested in Rooting, I honestly haven't done it yet on my DX because I'm afraid of screwing up my phone. I'm more of a hands on visual learner. I'd be more comfortable with a friend there with me walking me through it than I would just reading about it and trying it on my own. :o
This is basically me, except I'm on a Mac, so I think rooting may be even tougher for me with the inability to run .exe files. XD I've been trying to read stuff but still haven't made much headway.

Just like everyone else here I have been waiting on this phone for months now, especially since I'm still using my Droid Eris, and I agree that all these rumors and ad postings are nothing much but did find this Twitter post interesting:

@davidrw71 We are still on track to announce the availability of the Galaxy Nexus by Samsung this year. ^TH

So the way I read this is that they are not necessarily saying it will be released this year just that they are announcing the availability this year, thoughts?

I see it that way too. They're really playing it safe aren't they!

Ahh the good ole Eris those were (and still are for some) the good times amazing how it's dev community still has legs! :)

I'm a hands on visual learner as well. When I rooted my DInc I read a lot and had an understanding but I also had an instant messenger conversation going so I could be walked through it all step by step.
Hoping for the same help from one of my new Nexus family members to do the same this time. :D

Don't get me wrong, I understand the theory and why it's there.

However, I thought I saw from some experts why it wouldn't help much. And to further strengthen that argument, the GPS hardware in the RAZR, without barometer, gets a lock quicker than the GNex (according to P3 Droid).

So I understand the company line, just not buying it.

I think it is cool that is has it and see what developers can do with it.

On a side note I believe the xoom had it and I had a really hard time getting a lock with the GPS on it. *shrug*

I had the same question, but if you ask them to clarify, they'll let you know that they are in fact planning to release the phone this year.

@andrewenzy
"@VZWSupport Does that mean the phone won't be out this year, you'll just announce the availability of it this year?"

@VZWSupport
"@andrewenzy It is scheduled to be released this year. ^CM"

That was from Nov. 28th - link: https://twitter.com/#!/VZWSupport/status/141234147770368000

BTW, I'm still rocking my Droid Eris as well. Lil fella just won't quit, gotta love it.

You and me both. Anyone wanna do a webinar and show us what to do? :D

Sounds like they have rolled out the contigency plan to customer communications department, and they are hedging already. Seems to me to be a lame attempt to avoid taking responsibility for missing their original deadline if you ask me.

Before I rooted my Dinc I was TERRIFIED it would end up looking like this:

Fortunately, it was all OK though.

Welcome to Big Red!

nope :p there's Mac support for this device already too

fastboot-mac oem unlock - for unlocking

chmod +x install-superboot-mac.sh
./install-superboot-mac.sh
- installs insecure boot.img

Oh Steven. Thought you knew better. Weve been through that every night. Its just their witty way of signing off before they open back up for support the next day. Check their last post from each night- you'll find something similar.

I didn't know that. I felt violated. :p

I hear you. First time I rooted, I was sweating bullets. Then, it was like, what it's done.

So when you're ready, there's a root section here and plenty of people will help you through everything.

If I can root, anyone can. I am tech-dumb and I found it to be very easy!

Well I meant for my current phone, an OG Droid, but this is helpful - thanks! I'll have to save this command line somewhere for when the Nexus comes out.

Either no Verizon PRs today, or they're late. Usually up by now.

Got to remember, they are press releases, they will go out to the press first, then be posted on the VZW news site. If there is a Nexus PR, sites like Phandroid, DL, BGR, etc. will have the news out there PDQ.

ahh okay. yep a bit different for an OG Droid.

i'd be happy to after another method is found. tbh, the most trouble anyone is going to have is with the drivers. this is where i had trouble and this is where i continue to see people having trouble.

You need a root exploit to root a phone without unlocking the bootloader. Until a root exploit is found for ICS, the only way to root it will be through the bootloader.

I'm confident an exploit will be found, the question is just how long it will take.

by exploit you mean a 1 click method?

if so, check out the root section. i believe there has already been a 1 click method developed

The drivers are what scare me. :(
And I know there is a one click already but I am kinda at the point I want to learn what I'm doing rather than blindly going about it

Couldn't wait. The risk of losing my "unlimited" data with a dumb phone on my account (See previous. DInc went swimming) was too nerve wracking. And I was pretty evenly split between the Rezound and GNX anyway. Got the Rezound yesterday and it really is a SWEET phone. And I still have 2 weeks to swap out if, by some act of congress, the GNX does make it out of Never Never land.

On a really funny note: I was BSing with the manager about phones and OS's. She showed me her rooted DInc, running CyanogenMod. She said, and I quote (is that redundant here?) "I rooted and kept the unlimited data plan because I wanted the free wifi hotspot." I guess if their managers are doing it Big V must not care or be able to tell.

I must say, I find it kind of curious that Verizon doesn't have the Razr or Rezound on the home page - yet they feature the Bionic with their double data special. Gotta wonder what goes on in the heads of the marketing people over there.
