Alright friends hold it down while I'm gone. Off to take a final. May stop by a verizon store on the way home but I feel it's pointless..

For all those that think this has to do with Google Wallet:

Statement from Jeffrey Nelson, spokesperson for Verizon: Recent reports that Verizon is blocking Google Wallet on our devices are false. Verizon does not block applications.
Google Wallet is different from other widely-available m-commerce services. Google Wallet does not simply access the operating system and basic hardware of our phones like thousands of other applications. Instead, in order to work as architected by Google, Google Wallet needs to be integrated into a new, secure and proprietary hardware element in our phones.

Based on this, Verizon doesn't really have a choice. It's not a software issue, it's a hardware issue.

No, this is all Verizon. The hardware is there -- the Gnex has a Secure Element, which is basically a separate, small processor that enables your CC info etc to be maintained in an entirely separate subsystem from the rest of the device. You just have to have code in the firmware to access that Secure Element, and software to tap into that firmware code. That's why Google Wallet can't just be sideloaded onto a Gnex, but instead has to be flashed on. From reports on XDA, though, once you flash it on properly, it works like a charm.

From reports I've read (but don't recall where), Google has said that they did not include Google Wallet because VZW "strongly encouraged" them not to. Verizon is trying very hard to make it appear that they didn't "block" the application, because that would violate C-block spectrum auction "open network" rules. They are trying to say that they "don't trust" the hardware as an excuse, because if they had just said "we told Google that if they wanted this device to get approved on our network, it'd better not have Google Wallet," it would've sounded a whole lot like "blocking."

Regarding Google Wallet, I think Jerry from Android Central summed it up nicely in an article posted yesterday:

Google Wallet isn't part of AOSP (The Android Open Source Project). It's included with the Sprint Nexus S 4G (which is the only phone to offer Google Wallet without hacks) because of some sort of deal between Google and Sprint that we don't like, understand, or really know anything about. Come to think of it, the same thing can be said about Google Voice integration. Why Sprint-only, you ask? Like I mentioned, we don't really know, but Google needs somewhere to test these things and Sprint was willing. Let's be clear here -- no other Nexus device has ever had Google Wallet without hacking it on. This means the Verizon Galaxy Nexus is just like the penta-band unlocked GSM Galaxy Nexus in this regard. Or any Nexus S that's not the Sprint Nexus S 4G.

Editorial: Is the Verizon Galaxy Nexus really a Nexus? You betcha

Emphasis mine. When people first started crying foul over GW a few days ago, I was flabbergasted as to why people would even think the Verizon version would support it upon release. For right now, this is a SPRINT-only function. The "unlocked" GSM models of both the Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus DO NOT support it. Why would anyone think they are getting Sprint-exclusive functionality on a Verizon device? It's not on ANY other device right now other than the WiiMax Nexus S. It makes NO sense why anyone would be outraged over it, and it makes even less sense that lack of Google Wallet support is the reason for the hold up.

Finally, just gonna reiterate, how special Android forum is. I have read about ( and began to myself) share more real-life details with the fine folks here than anywhere else on the internet. That is a special thing! Now, to catch up on what I missed while writing this....

Good dreams ehh! Thanks for sharing it's a special place indeed ;)

Just sharing todays experience at a local PREMIUM RETAILER (not corporate) store.

Store manager was there, I asked him what he knew.. said "ohh yeah they shipped me them today I *should* have them tomorrow."

He had no clue if he will be able to activate them. But he said he will sure try to once he has them. It's literally right down the road from me lol, here's to hoping even though I completely doubt it.

From Ubergizmo. Im not a fan of images on the internet. Being that they can be shopped.. but for w/e its worth..

BTW speaking of the Verge, this is an amazing Android article: Android: A visual history | The Verge

OT:

I need someone to develop an app that is part notepad and part spreadsheet so I can easily keep track of Christmas gifts I've gotten people, who still needs gifts and any ideas that pop into my head.

BTW I use this every time the holidays come around -- it is perfect for how I do my holiday shopping.

Not sure if Verizon likes typos or they always spell network as "NetWork" but just doesn't seem legit enough for me. I still don't believe there is no date set. Doesn't make sense to me.

I dropped by my local corp VZW store. I spoke with the manager. He's very knowledgable about this phone, and its release fiasco. Anyway, he said it was set for release today, then got postponed, etc etc (like we all have heard.) However, he said he thought "for sure" that it would be released Monday or Tuesday, he just wasn't sure of which day exactly. He didn't seem real thrilled about the delays himself (obviously it cuts in to his back pocket as well.)

He brought up a good point about the 4G outage - tomorrow's release was already delayed, BEFORE the 4G outage, so that can't be it.

He also indicated that "internally" the phone was slated to have Google Wallet on it (at least from marketing), but also said that "product development" said otherwise. So, who knows what that really means?

Lastly, my comments to those that are talking about this phone being cancelled - that's NONSENSE! The phones are ALREADY in stores, not just VZW but apparently numerous resellers as well. They've (Google, Samsung, VZW) obviously spent millions on development, labor, marketing, distribution, etc etc. It is very hyped up. Anyone that's used it LOVES it. This isn't even in the same ballpark as the Nexus One. Why in the world would VZW back out of that? Sure, anything can happen, but cancelling this phone at THIS time, I don't see it.

Sorry but I was wondering if I upgraded to a rezound now with my grandfathered unlimited data plan now and I return the rezound in the next 14 days for the nexus would it still transfer my grandfathered unlimited data plan. I really need a phone to use :( i've been using my ipod to make calls on wireless for the past 2 months and a cracked samsung trance for the 3 months before that :'( Thank you in advance and I wish I could have stayed up with all of you but I was too tired and when I woke up, I woke up to disappointment

Just got off the phone with my friendly local Costco Verizon rep, Nate.

Me: Hey, I'd like to come pick up the Galaxy Nexus and switch to Verizon.
Nate: Cool, come in tomorrow and I'll take care of you.
Me (starting to sweat): Uh, really, tomorrow, you say?
Nate: That's correct, tomorrow.
Me: You mean tomorrow, like in tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 9th?
Nate (Laughing): Yes, sir.
Me: Uh, you're absolutely positive about this?
Nate: Yes, we can sell it tomorrow.
Me: Er, do you have it now?
Nate: No, we're expecting our shipment today.
Me: Sweet...what's your name?
Nate: Nate
Me: Thanks Nate! See you tomorrow!
Nate: Goodbye

I have a crazy story for everyone!

I was at Starbucks this morning at about 9:30 AM and there was a Verizon Premium Retailer next door so I decided to stop in. I asked if he had any demo units of the Galaxy Nexus and he said no but they received a bunch of units to sell yesterday and could sell me one today.

I played dumb and said "I'll take one right now". He went into the back, got one out and started getting it ready for the sale. We confirmed it was 32 GB, placed the SIM card in and started proceeding through the activation and sale. He said it showed up in his system to sell so he could sell it to me! As I'm waiting for him to finish up the paperwork I'm having images of me taking a picture of myself with my new Nexus and posting it on here. I was thinking "I hope that doesn't close the thread!" I kept pacing in the store waiting for the sale to be complete. I thought I was about to pull off the swindle of the century.

Well unfortunately we got to a point where he didn't know if the upgrade price should be $299 or $399 so he had to call his manager. He called and the manager told him he could not sell me the Nexus today and that Verizon had asked them not to sell the units yet. I said "come on, I won't tell anyone" (yeah right). He said he couldn't because it would show up in inventory and he'd get in trouble but he took my number and said he'd call me as soon as he received the OK to sell them.

I WAS SOOOOOOO CLOSE!!!

Well at least this confirms that there is no "LOCK" on activating the SIMs or the Nexus and if you can trick someone into letting you buy one then congratulations you get one early! I called a few more stores after that but unfortunately all of the others were more knowledgeable than this one... Good luck Nexus pioneers!

Hey, has this been posted here yet? It's a post from last night in an AC forums thread:

Would be very exciting if true!!
Sounds credible enough, but I just don't understand why they would delay a device launch over network issues. It's not like they're ceasing sales of any other phones that are in stock. Blaming the delay on recent network outages seems a little too convenient of an excuse...

No, this is all Verizon. If this is true, it brings back the last minute change of heart by Verizon to include Wallet in the release as a possibility. If downloading from the market is not possible that is.

Feasible reasons for delay:
1. OTA required upon activation not ready
2. LTE outage results in poor service on newly launched device
3. Changed mind on including Wallet, and are rushing an addition to the OTA going out on launch day.

Not feasible reasons for delay:
1. Verizon execs upset their thunder was stolen, and threw a temper tantrum, delaying it and locking down info so they are the ones who get to break the news.
2. Steven called up and asked for a few more days, cause he loves this thread too much.

I knew it, this is so going to happen for a few lucky folks tomorrow/this weekend....

Corporate store just outside Raleigh, NC where I had an appt tomorrow at 9 to pick up G Nex ... yes we have them in stock, but we are not allowed to sell them tomorrow. My contact seemed pissed about it and sorry. Said he would call when he had more info. Just add this to the other hundreds of similar stories.

Only problem with Costco is that you can't purchase a phone at full price. It must be a upgrade or a new line.

I got a fever, and the only prescription ... is more Nexus!
Ha! I said the exact same thing in one of my first posts. :p

True!! Though I've been married for almost ten years now. She just leaves all the electronics decisions to me.
Wish I could get my girlfriend to let me make decisions for her. She's adamant on getting an iPhone.

Ninja'd by me yesterday morning. ;) Stop taking all my ideas! :p

How do you have time to follow both this forum, and one over there? I can't even keep up here. Impressive.
Heh, that's nothing, I'm simultaneously refreshing my Google Reader feed and reading MLB Trade Rumors as well. :p
