Root [HOW-TO] Simplified Root + Recovery + Custom ROM

right.
the cm7 roms have everything they might need already installed and properly symlinked.
busybox, flash_image, dump_image, and other non-standard (for aosp anyway) tools.

Cool, I've been wanting to use this as a help option since it first came out.
Thanks!

Hi, I just bought the Optimus today. I am trying to root it before activating it, but I can't figure out how to transfer the gingerbreak to the sd card. I feel really dumb since this seems to be a basic step, but it's not working for me.

Do you have access to a PC? If so, then it's simple. Download Gingerbreak on the PC, connect your OV to the PC, turn on USB storage, and Bobs your uncle!

I did all that, but when I turn on USB storage nothing pops up. I went into computer and got into the phone that way, but no matter where I put the file it doesn't show up on my phone. I tried taking the sd card out and installing it directly into my computer and doing it that way, still not working.

I feel dumb, I didn't search for it with the File Manager.

Ok so I got to this part: Then under Advanced Settings, format all partitions EXCEPT /sdcard.

I don't see a format option under advanced setting, but it does have an option for Partition SD card. What do I do?

Thank you for the How-To!!! I bought my Optimus V 2 days ago. I was searching around the net just browsing info on it when I saw the word 'overclock' and I may have got an erection. :D

I found your forum today and just finished successfully changing my phone to version 2.3.7 instead of 2.2.2 and CyanogenMod 7.2. Thank You!!!

Now the fun begins ..

PLEASE HELP

I used gingerbreak...all good
I flashed a new recovery, seemed to work, rebooted and stock recovery is there???!!!
I then used the flashimage-gui, it did its thing, I went to recovery and STILL STOCK???
I tried rom tools and it flashed and said i had clockworkmod recovery and tried to boot to it and it was still stock recovery????!!!

What is happening?

Download a terminal emulator if you don't have one already.

Type in su
Then hit the enter key.
If you got a # then your rooted.
If you get a $ then you need to run the gingerbreak.apk again.

If you get a # then make sure you go to the market and update su.
If you haven't installed Busybox yet, now is the time to do it. You can find a Busybox installer in the market. If it doesn't install to /system/bin(it might not), choose the alternate install location (/system/xbin)
When done go here http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...tory-reset-your-rooted-phone.html#post3263770 to finish.

Nixie, is your OV brand new? Knowing the age of your handset will help us help you, as they aren't all entirely the same.....

Everything went fine when I flashed last night, but I have found one problem today. I can't d/l apps from the market anymore. I have a connection to the internet through WiFi and 3G but it won't download. I have searched and seen suggestions for clearing the market cache. I checked but the Market Apps Installer cache says 0 and the buttons are greyed out. I also read you need Google Talk and I can't find it on my phone. Any suggestions? thanks...
