Root [HOW-TO] Simplified Root + Recovery + Custom ROM

Go back into your recovery again and wipe cache partition and dalvik cache again. This happened to me a couple of times in the past. This ^ worked both times.

You don't need Google Talk. Did you flash Gapps?

No, I was going to but it didn't show up in the list. I only did [ROM][WIP] BACKside ROM (CM7) + Green Machine Theme. When I go to install zip from SD card and then choose zip from SD card only BACKside shows up.

I've tried that a couple of times and it hasn't helped. After looking on my SD card again I don't see Gapps on it. I'll d/l again when I get home and put it on to see if it makes a difference. Can I just go into recovery and flash Gapps or do I need to wipe the cache and dalvik again first?

*Edit* I have Android version 2.3.7 instead of 2.2.2 and CyanogenMod 7.2. Isn't Gapps the CyanogenMod? Excuse my ignorance. I'm new to smartphones.

When I flashed last night, I was following the instructions and when it said:

"9. Wipe Data/Factory Reset, wipe cache partition & dalvik-cache. Then under Advanced Settings, format all partitions EXCEPT /sdcard."

There weren't any options to format anything in Advanced settings. The only thing I saw under Advanced was wipe dalvik cache and I didn't format anything. I was just doing some reading on the Clockworkmod and I saw the section Mounts and Storage Menu. In that menu (which I didn't even look at last night) it has options for formatting boot, system, data, cache, sd card, and sd-ext.

So do I need to go back into Clockworkmod, do all of #9 again (and formatting in the Mounts Menu) and reflash with BACKside and Gapps? Maybe not doing that last night has something to do with not d/l'ing from the Market?

Whoa there, Thunder! Slow down, with all the formatting. You just need to go into the recovery, flash Gapps, wipe cache and dalvik, and reboot.

Market itself is part of Gapps, which ROM developers are not really supposed to distribute.

Thanks, tried it but still can't d/l apps. Is there supposed to be a market icon after installing Gapps?

Ok, thanks everyone! Finally found the Market icon and got it setup. I can play Angry Birds again. :D

hey, i'm about to jump off and do this. i all reading somewhere on the forum that it's best to have the original 2GB SD installed when doing it-is that true? and should i format it prior to any of these steps? (there's nothing i need on it--all my apps and music are on a different card).

also, there are a few versions of the gingerbreak apk. can i assume the highest number is the latest and the best choice? (GingerBreak-v1.20)

thanks! ff

The sd card won't really effect anything, so it shouldn't matter. I've heard some people have had better luck with v. 1.19, but I couldn't vouch for it one way or the other. How old is your phone? If you have the newer screen, Gingerbreak is your easiest option. If you have one of the original OV's (like mine) then you may need to use Super One Click.

Yes, 1.2 in the OP's link. Also, in this step, 9. Wipe Data/Factory Reset, wipe cache partition & dalvik-cache. Then under Advanced Settings, format all partitions EXCEPT /sdcard.

You will find wipe dalvik-cache in advanced. Formatting is not under Advanced. You will find it under Mounts and Storage. I missed that part when I rooted a week ago. Didn't seem to hurt it. But I decided to do it all again a few days later and do the formatting like I should have. It got me about 50 meg more internal space. Don't know the answer to the SD card question.

thanks brotherswing. bought this late fall from target during the $99.00 sale. so i assume later model.

re: the SD, i'm sorta oping i can rot and rom with the 2 gig formatted, then pop the 16 gig back in and have all my apps back. :D but if i have to i'll just redownload.

Urgent question: i'm in Mounts and storage, and i'm formatting partitions. i'm through them all the way down to /data (not doing /sdcard as per instructions) but i'm a bit nervous about doing the /sd-ext, and /system partitions. is it ok to do this?

nevermind--grew a set and did it. that's what the instructions say, after all!

:p

I did it all except SD Card. Then flash the ROM and Gapps.

PHEW! it worked. i forgot to export my contacts though, but i'm on Google so it shouldn't be too hard...

also to note-if you have 2 step verification set on google, and you do this, you seem to have to turn that off online before you can sign in to your account on the phone.

any suggestions re: overclocking. i set min to 600, max to 787. seems a bit snappier.

extra thanks to @Whyzor for the great instructions. only thing to change would be what Atmazzz mentioned to me earlier:

Formatting is not under Advanced. You will find it under Mounts and Storage.

which i would have been to scared to look for on my own. :o

Glad everything worked for you. Welcome to the Darkside. Or maybe I should say BACKside. :p

Mine is set to 480/787. I tried 806 but it rebooted once. I'm still playing with different combos. Just don't select Set on Boot until your comfortable with it where it is.

Make sure you don't take the min. above 480MHz as the min is where the phone idles. If your above 600 MHz max then 480 min will allow you to ramp up quicker ans use less battery doing it.
Anything over 480 min will make the CPU work harder and get hotter. More battery drain and heat.
480-787 is a good place to be for all around performance and battery life.
