Root i am rooted and rom and kerneled, now a question or two

Partner, I don't know what to tell you.

Possibly a bad dl to begin with? maybe dl it again?

Which recovery are you using? Amon ra 2.3, i hope?

Did you wipe really well before you flashed the rom? perhaps you could try that or even a different rom, and check the phone out first thing before you restore anything?

That being said, do you have titanium backup and tb pro to back up your apps so you can restore them on new roms?

flashing a rom over itself, after only wiping cache and dalvik cache is usually a good way to straighten things out without messing with your setup.

Maybe someone else will come by with a suggestion to help.

yes amon ra, and yes i wiped then did superwipe before i flashed...

could it be my kernel?

i chose tiamat 3.3.7-sbc as it was suggested by someone else on the forum, maybe its the sbc part, i can get the one without, but i dont know enough about the difference to know if that will work.

i guess i could always try a new DL as you suggest..
i'm gonna keep reading and searching, i know the answer is out there somewhere!

actually, flashing the rom over itself would have put you back on the stock kernel I think. so that isn't it.

Might not have been a good dl in the first place.

Me personally, i think I would do the wipes all over again really well and dl and flash Mikg3.0

Just to get you up and working.

Have you used tb and tb pro to back up your apps yet?

oooh..i need to re-flash the kernel too after an "over" flash???

i will try two things..one your suggestion to re d/l

and then i will clean up and hit up MikG (that was my second choice for my first ROM)

i really like this miui interface tho!

i am sining off this project for the evening, watch me some football and have a drink, i will try this all in the morning and post my updates...

thanks for helping me walk thru this.

Dustwun has hit the nail on the head on this one. ;)

I would try to redownload the rom and try a complete wipe and reflash. Sign in and everystuff, and just use the phone for a day as is. If you don't notice the glitch, boot to recovery, nandroid, and then try the kernel again. Play around for a day or two and "gauge" the phone performance, battery life, etc. If the phone plays nice, the kernel / rom combo is good for your phone. If the battery drains, or you get lag, etc, the kernel probably is no good for your phone.
Try another one, kernels are phone specific, so it may not work for your phone, but I may get wicked battery life with it. ( I just really wanted to say wicked there :D )

If things just don't seem to work out with the rom, move on to MikG. It's a great rom, and aamikam is a phenominal developer. He's somehow able to get sense roms to "almost" perform as well as AOSP. Worth a test flash for sure. ;)

Welcome to Flash-A-Holic's Annonymous!! :D

when you re-flash the rom make sure that you only wipe dalvik cache and cache and then flash miui. data is not needed to be wiped.

ok re-downloaded both the rom and kernel (this time withiout sbc), still occurring...

read somewhere might be a "proximity sensor" issue, turned that off, nope..

looks like i am gonna flash to MiKG and freedom kernel for now until someone comes along with a solution, i really like MIUI otherwise and was very happy to be away from sense...

edit::: tried to back with TB (non pro) : says i am not rooted (???) how is that???

help again!
(grumble...)

last thought...when i d/l'd MIUI it was version 1.12.30, they have many more versions, but this is the one that seems to be the latest linked to the EVO, am i reading this correctly that the later versions are not meant to be stable on the EVO, maybe i could try another version...(seems risky)

hoping someone comes up with something...!

thanks anyway for your help so far

I'm not up on that ROM. Don't know anything about the versions and issues, etc.

Do you have superuser app? Look and see it gave tb permission. Can get it from market if missing.

At this point, I would go to 3.0. After tb of course. Don't complicate it with a kernel till rom been up and running and you know it works, I'd suggest.

Edit: Dust Ninja posted me! :D

Hmmm, for some reason your superuser isn't giving TB permission.
Try to go under your apps and select superuser, you should see a list of root only apps. Select TB and give it root permission.
I'm really not that well versed on miui, I haven't used it in a very long time.
Since you are still having the issues after reloading the Rom, I would give MikG a run. Might be something in the Rom / kernel combo your phone doesn't like.
Also when you flash MikG, don't flash the kernel right off the bat, just flash the Rom. When you boot up the phone let it sit for about 10 minutes without touching it. Don't power on the lockscreen, don't talk to it, just leave it in time out. Aamikam recommends this so the Rom has some time to settle before you get started. ;)

ok will give it a try, i do have a superuser app...i flashed it friday...

i dont have too many apps already up, so re-downloading wont be such a big deal even w/o back up...

maybe i should have let MIUI "rest" before adding the kernel???

so i will wipe data/dalvik/and cache then run superwipe, then i will reflash the superuser and then Mikg, let it "rest" then add kernel (i was thinking freedom nightly stock for now????)

may have noticed a problem, not sure it is related,

when i power up to my (is it called??) boot screen...it delays for a second or too while it runs thru a little ?script?...i can barely make out what it says as it goes by, but i think it is saying "file not found" or something like that...along with PCxxxx ??? i think that is what i am seeing...

does this fail have anything to do with my issue?

ok, got mikG 3.0 up and running, no phone issues....

will flash kernels and upload apps later, must go run sunday errands, but at least i have a phone that works...

maybe will try MIUI again later...maybe without a kernel at first

how important is it to run a custom kernel on AOSP?

brief update...got home from errands...phone dropped in 2.25 hrs down 16% in battery power, didnt touch phone the entire time i was out...hadnt set up anything but my gmail acct.

not sure what i am going to do next here...

i am determined to find out the problem with MIUI tho!!!!

You have to let things settle. Battery life is usually pretty bad the day after a flash.

Also, flash your custom kernel and get that settling as well.

Look at your sync settings, and make sure anything you dont use isnt syncing.

Check for wake locks as well. Settings>about phone>battery>Battery use
If "awake" is a solid line you;ve got a wake lock

Just got home, let me speak to some of your comments.

You don't really need a custom kernel at all, but they have their good points. On aosp, with an sbc kernel, it can charge your phone more. That can be a plus or a minus, depending on who you ask.

i have Mikg3.0 running on stock kernel. I like it just fine.

Look at Menu/settings/accounts and synch on your phone. what all do you have set up in there to synch? A lot of stuff or what? turn some of that auto synch stuff off and that will help battery, can have it set to just synch when you call the app up.

I also use the free app, Juice Defender. It cycles your radios on and off instead of leaving them on all the time. that is a battery saver too and doesn't really mess with communications unless you choose a really drastic off period. when you do decide to use a custom kernel you can use setcpu to over or underclock, set governors and screen off profiles. those will affect battery life as well. Not to mention what sort of coverage area you are running around in. If signal is weak, will constantly be hunting a signal. see Juice defender app for that.

I would let this kernel settle for a while too. Let your phone go through a couple of charging cycles after trying those things and see what you think. also, do you have gps and wifi on? If you aren't using them, it might save a little to turn them off till you do, not sure how much they use when dormant.
also, 4g doesn't need to be on unless you are in a 4g coverage area and as needed then too.

Glad your phone at least works like a phone, had me wondering there.

Get this rom set up with your apps, use tb and save your apps after they all update, make a nand before you flash a kernel or go back to miui. have a working nand in reserve that way. I notice when I come back to stock kernel from trying a custom one that it takes a bit to settle then too.

all I can think of for now, have a great day. Off to ride bike for a while.

After you installed amon ra, did you either delete or rename the file you used to install it, PCwhatever it is? You should at least rename it if still there so phone doesn't look for it. some folk suggest having a working recovery installation file on sd card for backup. not a bad idea.

ok, will look for a wake lock, get me some setcpu and juice defender,

will in the mean time continue to hunt for answers to my other issue...

i would really like to like MikG as everyone seems to, but i want away from Sense (i am bored with it-i guess)

If you want to get anything out of using SetCPU your going to need to install a custom kernel. The stock one won't allow you to do much.

Give juice defender a try if you want, but some feel that having an app running in the background to save battery life is counter productive. I personally didn't see much benefit from juice defender so I got rid of it.

If you want to throw the AnthraX kernel on there and don't have it yet send me a PM and I'll give you the link. The developer had to take it down because of legal issues from it having proprietary beats audio code in it.

Other than that I would suggest Lithids Aggressive freedom UNIVERSAL

Edit:

Also, that script about checking for PC36IMG.zip will pop up anytime you go into your H-Boot screen. So don't worry about that

Glad the phone issue has stopped, that was pretty much the whole point of flashing to MikG. MikG is very stable and is stock, so I wanted to be sure your issues were rom / kernel related and not phone hardware.

Now that you know it's not your phone you can try out any rom you like. Check out the roms available under the AOSP section in the roms and kernels sticky, found here:

If you have any problems or questions we'll be here to help. :)

Thanks, any aosp you recommend? Remembering I liked the look of MIUI.....something stable for the noob I am

i really like this rom:
[ROM] Team Nocturnals Xplod E4G RLS (11/15/2011) - xda-developers
it is based off of the sony xperia phone. the launcher is really different. but i have had 0 issues with it.

also there is cm7 and deck's that i like.

also you can try this one:
[BETA-2][ROM]:CIUI cyanogen base, MIUI style [4G] see with in. - xda-developers
this one is a cm7 based rom but with a lot of miui themes added to it. it is still in beta so i have no idea how stable it is. but it looks really cool especially if you like miui.

I have JD on 2 phones. The signal pretty much sucks where I work and it seemed to suck down my battery. at least on my older phone. I put JD on there and it seems to help. Since I like it on the old phone, I stuck it on the Evo.

Maybe I am just getting better life cause I use the Evo to do my internet? anyway, I guess it is a matter of perception. I sure haven't gotten my slide rule out and done any figgering on it. :p

Here is a question I have that i just remembered. Are there any aosp roms that are not based upon cm7? Just wondering cause I would like to try one if such and animal exists.

I dont think so. That would require a ground up build and I think most devs have just left that to the CM team.

I may be wrong though, I'm pretty much a sense-only guy and I'll admit I need to dabble in AOSP more

not many really. the only ones that i know of is OMGB and OMFGB

wtf? I mean, huh? :p do we have a link to site?

you ever try them? What do you think of them?

What do the letters stand for?

edit: Ok, found link to site. hasn't been updated in a few months according to change log. looks like it has some cool features. I wonder if this is a way to do aosp that would avoid the cm7 boot loop or if this one would have it to?
