Root [HOW-TO] Simplified Root + Recovery + Custom ROM

I was wondering if someone could clarify one difference between the instructions on this thread (Whyzor) vs. the instructions on the JerryScript thread...

Whyzor says to boot into recovery and do the "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" before wiping caches, etc., but JerryScript makes no mention of doing a "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" in his instructions.

Also, JerryScript says to back up/restore apps. But Whyzor does not. Personally, I'd rather not back up my apps. Instead I'd rather do clean installs of all my apps after I flash the new ROM. Please advise.
 
Jerry doesn't mention factory reset because he guides you through the individual steps that achieve the same results. Backing up your apps is always optional, but always a good idea.
 
That is correct. The .exe is what installs the zip files.
When done, restart PC

It has been JerryScript's experience that using the "wipe data/factory reset" option can do more harm than good sometimes. When formatting, "format system" option wipes what is necessary.
 
The zips are what are being installed by the .exe, somewhat like the ROM and Gapp zips are installed using the recovery/flash_image.

I'm not sure we are talking about the same thing.:confused:

In the link for LG-Optimus-V.zip above, post #253, in the zip is the LGUnitedMobileDriver_S498CA21_WHQL_ML_Ver_2.1.exe, and also a folder called LG_SmartPhone with the files LGSmartPhone_ModemlinkDUNDrive_WHQL_ML_Ver_1.0.zip and LGWindowsMobile_USBDriver_WHQL_ML_Ver_1.0.zip.

I'm not sure if that package is the one I first used, but I was tired of the BGupdater, or what ever it was, asking for control of my sys everytime I booted up. I uninstalled everything. I only use the LGUnitedMobileDriver_S498CA21_WHQL_ML_Ver_2.1.exe now and don't have the other files, zip files, on my computer.

If there are some kind of zips within the .exe itself, I understand. If so, I don't know why the other zips in that package are needed. That one .exe by itself works fine for me.
 
When you install the exe, it polls the usb ports to see what LG phones are there. If its internal archive doesn't contain the correct driver, it uses the zips as resource files. I have no idea, I'm just thinking out loud here. BTW, Andy, spell check has failed you.
 
When I plug in the phone I get a notification (on the phone) "USB debugging connected Select to disable USB debugging."

I had turned that on to root the phone. Do I need to leave that on, or turn it off?
 
Titanium Backup, probably the most popular of the root required apps, used to require it. It doesn't anymore, but still you get the point. You don't need to leave it on, but you may as well. The only time you need it turned off is for USB storage.

I can use usb storage with it on.
 
With the new ROM, the phone doesn't see any of the apps I had on the SD card with the old ROM. I think I just want to wipe/format the SD card and start fresh. I've already backed up the entire contents of the SD card to my PC hard drive before flashing the ROM. Can I wipe the SD card with no ill effects?
 
Upgrade apparently went as planned. Android 2.3 IHO is up and running but I cannot install any apps. Web browser works, but when I go to any website to install an app, it typically says that it cannot find the URL.

I went direct to market.android.com and clicked on install for a new app I had never seen before. It goes to a checkout screen and says it will download shortly. Then I click on an OK button. Later returning to that same page, instead of an install button, the button is labeled "installed" but I don't see the app on phone when I click on the launcher? button (center bottom button showing all installed apps)

Also I backed up all of the phone contents. Is there a way I can easily retrieve all of my contacts, text message history, images, etc that were not stored on the SD card? If I reinstall those same apps that used them?

Noticed that Android Market thinks that all of the apps I installed on 2.2 are currently installed. Possibly due to association with the e-mail account that I have logged into?

Also noticed that when installing a separate app via android market that at the checkout screen the "choose device to install to" has only one option "LGE VM670" which is greyed out.
 
Sorry if this is getting a bit OT for this thread, but should I wipe the SD card from recovery mode or from Settings>Storage>Erase SD card? Or does it make any difference?
