Root Total newbie needing help with Optimus V (virgin mobile)

what are all these things and HOW do I do them?! lol
Look at the top in the al things root guide. You will find links to how to root your phone, how to install custom recovery, and how to install a custom ROM.READ THEM CAREFULLY cause VM changed screens on the phone and some recoveries won't work on certian screens.I'm sure you have the old Novaki (or however it's spelt) screen.

right. Just to be clear, do I have to download that app from my phone? Then the other one (does it matter which?) on my pc. correct?

You can download that with your phone, but it costs money to get it in the market/google play. You can use your phone browser....but it's probably easier to download with your computer, move it to SD card and install it. If you don't have a file explorer on your phone, I suggest getting one.

the BACKside custom recovery works with both screens right?

EDIT: Oh yes, it will

I am SO confused :( I have downloaded the files you said on my pc. I can't put them on the SD card because it says it's write protected. It is NOT!!! I read the threads on installing them but I don't understand most of the terminology.. I'm trying SO hard not to be blonde about this but I'm getting very discouraged.

I knew it, you are a blonde! lol jk. Are you using the original LG cable that came with the phone?

no, I never got one! just a generic usb.. is that bad?! (oh, and I have NO problem with the blonde thing. It actually works in my favour a lot of the time.. people expect a lot less from me!)

Very bad, try this: Settings>SD Card & phone storage> Mass storage only (check the box)

Edit: if it still don't work, unplug and replug the phone

I didn't know off hand if it did or not but I know that the all things root guide tells which ones will work with which screen.Don't want her to get the black screen or God forbid a bricked phone.

I told her to use the BACKside recovery or the new blue one based off of it, both will work with either screen.

um, there is no mass storage option....

Hmm, my optimus M has it in the Stock ROM....I don't know why LG didn't add it to the V menu :(

When did you install the Optimus V drivers? if you haven't rebooted your computer since you did, try doing that.

Try rebooting your phone first though. (Turn off, turn on)

um, remember when I said I bought the phone already rooted?! I don't know ANYTHING! lol I have to install drivers? from where? (see, r.e.a.l.l.y blonde!)

edit: never mind, I found them, installing now...

I have never had problems with the 4 generic cables that I have. There really isn't a difference in generic and vm usb cords. other then the quality of the manufacturer, and the color of the plastic on the wires inside the black plastic cord.

Oh, and you shouldn't need drivers to use it as a mass storage device. Most computers, if not all come with the generic driver that's required for mass storage devices.

Edit: When you plug in the phone, in the notification drop down is where the mass storage options are.

For the Optimus M, a couple of people have had problems with generic cables and USB connections...but this may not be her problem, she never installed drivers yet :p

She said that option isn't in her phone settings.....

Her phone wont let her add anything to the microsd card..."write protected"

and thank you SO much for your patience with this, I could send you some cookies or some proper English chocolate if you had a p.o. box :)

are you using an micro-sdcard to sdcard converter, or just the usb cable?

Edit: Or did the drivers fix your problem?

Just incase you accidentally format the entire SD card, yes.

Use this app to flash the recovery: [App] Flash Image GUI - Flash Kernels and Recoveries from normal Android mode! - xda-developers

Use one of these recoveries:
1)http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...cwm-green-w-backsideupdater-auto-install.html (This one is all green)
2)[ROM ] IHO OM-Mandylion [KERNEL] custom [RECOVERY] CWM-Blue (This one is all blue, make sure you download the recovery, not the kernel)

I will tell you how to install ROM later after you get the recvoery, please download the recovery with your computer, not your phone.
