How do I go about getting the directions for gps playing on the bluetooth and have it interrupt like it does if you are on the phone. Do I need a special bluetooth?

For the past 2 days I have not been able to get 3g on my droid. Is there something I could have messed up in the settings? Or could an app be messing with it? BTW my wife has a droid and she is getting 3g and has not seen this issue at all.
