Root 1 Click root app on the market

got it installed, thanks again...

even tho that was a smartass way to do it wishinit, i got a good laugh out of it. :)

@topdj, I'm feeling your pain. :-( I rooted successfully, got a few cool apps, and now my phone is running like crap half the time. I couldn't find any way to make a backup before I rooted, so now I don't have one.

On another note, slightly related, a friend of mine has an original Droid, and I walked him through downloading the z4root. Installed. Pulled the battery. Tried to run, enabled USB debugging, pulled the battery again. Ran the app and applied root. After about a minute, while "acquiring root access", it just dropped back to the home desktop screen. Unable to relaunch (message prompting to force close), we pulled battery and retried again. Same thing.

Why doesn't this thing work??? Is it because his is only a Droid (plain), not Droid X? Is it because something new has changed?

well anyone know a way to do it through my PC using the usb I want root back now,
Im sure its the Su file that I forgot to move before I allowed the update

@topdj, do you have the DX? What update did you just get? You're worrying me, because I don't want to lose my root.

Regarding my friend with the D1, I've been doing some reading, and it sounds like z4root doesn't work on the D1 with build frg83d, but SuperOneClick does. Supposedly.

Please tell. What update did you get? I'm a super n00b, n00best of the n00bs. I just got my DX, my first ever smartphone, 12 days ago. Since then I've been learning all these acronyms like crazy! The second day I had it, I got the update to 2.3.340.MB810. I hadn't learned of rooting yet, but tried z4root and it worked.

Should I be expecting another update to something new? And (sorry for n00b question) what is SU file? I don't want to lose my root. I like my root. :-)

I was able to catch the OTA update before it installed, is there anyway to disable OTA updates as opposed to just delaying them for 1 hour?

I rooted using Visionary and still have the app on my phone, but I see nobody has had success using it on the new OTA update.

Okay just got my Dx and im coming from a rooted Eris......i did the Eris myself via my comp before the one click came out for the phones.....i read this entire thread and i just have a single question...i understand on the Dx's the one click apps seem to be permanent but my only question is if i use a one click root like z4 (which there are like 9 links for on here lol) will i be fully rooted and able to install a custom rom?

That's what I used to root. No problems with root-only apps or installing custom ROMs (I've done two) after that.

@MyTjSux, I also have DX, love it. I can't answer regarding the custom ROM, as I haven't been that brave yet, but regarding "permanent"...

I also used z4root, ver 1.3 I believe. It gave me three options, temporary, permanent, and unroot. I first tried the temporary, which it said completed successfully, but afterwards I was still unable to uses Wireless Tether, so it appeared to me that temporary did not work after all. Then I tried "permanent", which has worked great, but the existence of the third option, unroot, tells me that "permanent" isn't permanent as in unreversible, but more as in persists after a power cycle.

Please pardon me if this seems like "duh", but it wasn't obvious to me, so I thought I'd share.

No i appreciate that because i had no idea there are options as i have not downloaded the z4 yet....thanks

Had to run it twice. 1st time it took me to screens for allowing non-marketplace apps then for debugging. When it rebooted, it was sloooow as crap- and the wifi toggle shortcut was stuck on "circling".. no superuser app either..

I ran it again. It completed in less than one min.

SU app is there.

Guess I'm good to go! Now onto ROM's/themes, etc.!

Thanks All!

Do I need to keep USB Debugging ON after the phones has been rooted? Or can I restore it's default of off?

Also, I assume I can now uncheck "Unkown Sources" in Applications.

As far as Titanium Backup, should I allow it update busybox as it wants to in the "Problems" button?

Thanks

*also, is there a cli/shell/terminal application by default? or is that something to be d/l'd from the market?

If your sending it back anyways then thats even more of reason to SBF and factory restore it. But if you really don't feel comfortable with the SBF then just do a factory data reset in the privacy menu and call it good.

This seems to imply that one can do the factory reset even if you're rooted, is that so? Think I want to try that and get a vanilla starting point backup. I'm rooted but have no roms using launcherpro plus
thanks again!

Yes, I always factory reset after ROM installs or just to get a claen start on the stock Moto ROM. You can factory reset while rooted and further more a factory reset will not remove root.

don't know about dropbox. I downloaded the app via my phone and installed it from there. I did have to change a setting to allow unauthorized apps, or something like that, because I didn't get the z4root from the official marketplace.

Yes, you need to enable installing of apps that don't come from the official market, and you also have to enable USB debugging. Then, after the app is installed, I suggest powering down the phone and pulling the battery, just for good measure, and putting it back in and powering up (obviously) and then run the z4root. It can take a few minutes to root, so be patient. Mine only took a couple, but I've heard 15.

Then get the wireless tether and adfree, grab a cold beer, and enjoy!

perm

When I did it, I first tried temp, but that didn't seem to do anything, wouldn't allow me to run wireless tether for example. After I did perm, everything else works.
