Root .596 sbf file!!!

Wow... awesome find man... appreciate it... now whenever they get stock gingerbread rooted we can use this...

Great but useless right now. GB is still not rootable. If you wanted root you would still have to flash the rooted GB files from TBH. Right now it's easier to just stick with SBF'ing back to froyo and flashing the two GB files that are already rooted.

This is however a step in the right direction. With this file making it's way to us, you know it's just a matter of time before a rooting method is found for the OTA.

Please bear in mind THIS IS NOT ROOTED, nor is there a way, currently to root it. You have been warned.

Yes, but those two bolded words are the key ;)

The FroYo upgrade was initially not rootable. The original Gingerbread leaks were initially not rootable. There's a good chance this build of GB will eventually be rootable.

And that's why I said this........:D

I'm going to download it in the hopes that one day GB will be rooted.....if not, no big deal, I can always use the 2.3.340 sbf and install the TBH pre-rooted release :D:D:D

It'll cut out a lot of steps in the process when it's rooted

Yeah cause when this gets a rooting method, SBF'ing this GB file and then rooting it will be a cakewalk. It will be froyo but better.....:D

Oh and we cant forget to make sure our deodex file will work on this also.

EDIT: I think, in the grand scheme of things, they should have called it Gingerbetter.....cause it's better than froyo.....:D

Root Newbies:

You will have NO USE for this.
In fact, most people will have no use for this.

contrary to what most are saying. I wouldn't say it's 100% useless at the moment. It can be used in case someone has f'ed their phone up and wants to return it. They can now use this SBF file to quickly put it to stock.

Yup. True.

Winrar should open it. Either that or winzip. If those don't work use 7zip. All open multiple archive types.

Interesting development... I'm with everyone else in hoping that other developments mean this will end up being quite useful.

So how did TBH root the .596 release that most of us are on now?

I suspect it only works because we're pushing from a rooted system. All any exploit does to gain root is to gain enough access to push an executable that's allowed to run with elevated permissions.

Since we're already on a rooted system, the Bootstrapper has that access already.

I'm a little hazy on the sanity checks and gates in the boot process so I don't know the details behind why multiple zips were required to push root to the first sets of Gingerbread. I believe there are verifications to the system files that are performed at first boot.

+1 to binary visions...

I'm thinking that P3Droid broke-up the GB OTA file and inserted the su/busybox/SuperUser.apk and Koush's bootstrapper pieces into the two-part .zip files.

Not sure what the key is that requires the splitting-up. It might have just been easier for him to implement it this way vs. keeping it all in one .zip--or there is a real need...dunno (that's why he makes the big bucks, lol).

There are some special TBH-related files in the .zip too, aside from the su/busybox/SuperUser.apk files. I haven't crafted my own update.zip before, so I'm not totally conversant in the commands in the update script (on my to-do list :p).

Once you (already) have a custom recovery like ClockworkMod, you can push (via flashing) anything you want...so, all the magic happens in the flashing. You'll also notice that the two .zip files were not signed--something that can only be handled by a custom recovery (but is a little troubling since the signing also ensure file integrity ;)).

Or...I could be all wet...just my two-cents :) ;).

Cheers!

still holding some hope that the SBF can be rooted, if not, the new purchased handsets would have to be SBF'd to FroYo to gain anything root. (And, of course, go through the upgrade with the rooted version).
It just may be a matter of time before this is available, but I'm sure it's coming up sometime soon.
(says the optimist...)

wow, just unzipped the .gz file and the SBF file itself is HUGE!!!!! 567 MB? Are you kidding me? wow.
