Root a little help/suggestions

I am still on froyo, which is actually fine to me. Problem I am having is it seems like all the roms are designs on a 2.3 gingerbread build. I am rooted with unrevoked, running the stock rom (sense). I would like to upgrade to gingerbread, and eventually Ics, but I am not sure if I should accept the over the air update to gingerbread. If I do take the over the air update, will my root be undone? Will I have a rooted phone with the security back on? Will the over the air update mess up my phone? I know these questions racing juvenile, but I am new to routine, and I would rather have a phone that halfway w

Welcome to forums! Do not accept ota while rooted. Can really put your phone in messed up state. .
As a matter of fact, you should go to menu settings and uncheck HTC updates.

That being said, the newer roms will have all the latest and greatest cooked in.
Again, welcome! Ask all the questions you need to to feel comfortable with the process !

I am not familiar with the process for switching over from Froyo to Gingerbread. I do think you have to update the Hboot. However Ocn, Andy, or Granite may be in soon to explain the process. I know you should read the Rooting for Gingerbread Dummies Guide before starting that process. My Initial Though is you have to undo the one to do the other. I'm not exactly sure about this process though So until one of them show go a head and start reading the guide.

your hboot is only updated when you do the ota update but there are tons of gingerbread roms out there that you can flash since youre rooted. Id suggest playing around with some roms based on the GB source code and see what you like. Turn your phone off, hold the vol down button and hit power while still holding vol down. Go into recovery, make a nandriod backup of pretty much everything that clockwork mod has in the list. You only need to back up everything on your first nandroid, after that you can just backup the o.s. From there you can start flashing different roms and if you ever want to go back to what you had, go back into recovery, do a factory reset and restore the nand. As everyone said already, don't accept the ota! It can Bork things up pretty bad.
Also as stated you can update to Gingerbread just by flashing a Rom based off of the latest build. Your radios and such won't be updated by flashing a Rom, unless you flash the Sprint lovers all in one ROM, but that's another story. If you could answer a few questions, we can get you updated.

Type what you see for your recovery, so we know which steps to follow. Also, are you only interested in a stock Rom?
There are a lot of roms to choose from, notably MikG, tommytomatoes classic, Xplode Rom, cm7. I'll suggest MikG as a first custom Rom myself. Now youdoofus will tell you cm7 , It's really what you like.
At the top of the forum is a sticky calls kernels roms and themes info, go under the Rom thread and check out a few of the roms.
Post back with your recovery and if you are willing to try out a custom Rom and we'll get you rolling!

As for roms, I think I would rather a vanilla experience, I have an N1 as well and I like the experience. I would only want name searching from the dial pqd which my evo does, but my n1 doesn't. And from what I see, I would like to run a stock ics version when it comes out.

The reason I was nervous is because after reading rooting for dummies, as well as romw and kernels (great info btw) I am under the impression I can't flash anything but 2.2 roms. I looked at the rom list and saw that the 2.2 roms were no longer in development, so how do I get to 2.3 and beyond? Then I was reading the kernel has to be compatible with the rom, but I thought the kernel came with the rom? Ugh!

Anyway, my ultimate goal is to get ics when its released for the evo, I see they are still having probs with the camera, and maybe hardware exceleration. I can't wait! That's what made me root and start educating myself a little.

Once your rooted, you can flash any version of android you would like. You can go from froyo stright to ICS or from ICS right back to froyo by simply flashing your ROM.

Kernels are specific to your android version, but any ROM will come with a kernel already built in. However, it is usually hte stock kernel, and most people get better performance/battery life by switching to a custom kernel

yep like rxpert said you can go any which way now that you are rooted. the choice is your as to which you want to run on your phone. just make sure that the custom kernel matches your rom version.

well we have a nice breakdown of roms and kernels and what they are in the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html. it is broken down to the different versions of sense and aosp roms. also the second post is for kernels which are also broken down into sense and aosp.

just make sure that with froyo roms use froyo kernels, gingerbread roms use gingerbread kernels and aosp roms use aosp kernels.

took the plunge, I finally figured out the rom/kernel thing. put the RCMix 3d Runny 3.5 on my evo... nice!

you can get them here:[ Radios ][ 9-5 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers. i would recommend the radio combo.

just make sure that you have one nandroid backup that has wimax backed up. if you are on clockwork mod recovery then they are automatically done. in amon ra recovery you need to make sure that you check wimax as well. this is one way that you could loose your wimax keys which would mean no 4g. and once they are gone, they are gone for good. please read this:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...before-you-flash-your-radios-read-thread.html. do not let this scare you. it is rare that you could loose wimax.

also make sure that you have plenty of battery before flashing the radios. and whatever you do, do not pull the battery out while it is installing that is a sure way to brick your phone.

Ha, well good news for you, there are already ICS ports out there for the Evo. I would recommend this one. I am a big fan of Deck's gingerbread work.

Hey Guys, hope I am not hijacking this post but I think we are in Simular situation.
I have not update my rooted Unrevoke3 S-Off EVO 4G Since MikFroyo V4.61, Kernel NT 4.3.2, Andriod V.2.2, Baseband V2.15.00.11.19, Software V.3.70.651.1, PRI 1.90_003, PRL 60683.
Do I need or have to update my root to Revolutionary? arleady have S-off and flash many roms and Kernels before.
After all the reading and looking around I think I will go far MikG 3.0 sense.
Not sure the Kernel that best go with this.
Due to the Version of software, Andriod, Baseband, PRI & PRL do I have to update these or once I flash the MikG3.0 those will be updated too? If not do I download the combo
EVO_Radio_2.15.00.08.08_WiMAX_27243_PRI_NV_2.15_00 3 and flash.
Looking for some guidance getting my EVO up to par.

I saw the list, but there is now information on how to flash it, I have no idea how I would do it. I don't need to update my radios right now, but I just want to know before I have to cross that bridge. As for the 4g, I have my evo on bosst mobile, so I don't have 4g anyway, don't really miss it either.

ok, rooted, put a new rom on my evo, but I just noticed the market is missing, how do I get the market back? I went online to install filego so I could get to my apk's on my sd card, but that won't work for some reason. anybody have this issue and how do I get around it?
