All Things Froyo

Possible relevant anecdote. My Captivate won't turn on, period - no charger connected indicator screen, computer doesn't see USB connected, just totally blank/black screen.

Could've been a damaged/shorted USB port. I know that it doesn't help you or matter now, but just for future reference... this can keep the phone from even booting or charging.

I just returned from the AT&T store where they got me on the phone with the warranty division (or something like that), who escalated me to their Android phone-specific warranty/troubleshooting department.

Here's another possibility for Revets - are you by any chance using a replacement charger with/or a replacement 'USB" cable? Some of the cables that look like USB aren't. You'll get no connection to the PC, nor will there be any charging from the PC.

Look, it's the carriers to blame for this delay, and since this is the Captivate forum, I called at&t out.

I am a software developer in the networking industry, used to deal with at&t, sprint and others on many issues. The QA processes from these large carriers are very similar to each other. The reasons could be related to FCC and other US government regulations, as well as networking/comm engineers moving from job to job within these large telecoms, thus implementing processes strikingly similar to one another.

However I did see large differences in processes between the telecom's and the cable companies.
How come I can get a copy of Android 2.1 flashed to my phone through the backdoor because Sony Ericsson and ATT are too slow to bring us 2.1 through the front door. Isn't the FCC and other organizations supposed to protect us from harm? This is purely an ATT marketing scheme that is slowing the process down. ATT is going to Scheme itself out of selling phones in the next round with all of their OS updating trifling, yes trifling...

Thanks for the hints and suggestions folks.

For those curious what happened, the phone slid off the arm of a couch, fell roughly 18 inches where it hit a light wooden shelf of a side table (not sure what point of the phone made contact) before falling a final six inches onto carpet. And that minor fall killed the phone. Probably a very unlucky fluke. There's absolutely no visible damage to the phone, it's just completely dead. Stock battery and charger, but no response.

The phone was about 20% charged at the time and I didn't try to use it on for a couple hours after the fall so not sure if the battery died and a damaged USB port won't allow charging or if something else was knocked loose. I'm guessing the latter. I went by the AT&T store simply to try a different (charged) battery to see if that would bring the phone to life - step 1 of my "WFT happened!!" debugging process. But the store's anti-theft cables made it impossible to remove the back plate of the wall model to access the battery and the sales guy didn't seem to want to open a new phone to try the battery, so he connected me to the warranty people, told me what the tell them, and AT&T is now replacing the phone with a new (refurbished) Captivate at no cost - just some time on my old, ancient phone. I figured I'd jump at that solution rather than continue trying to figure out how to fix the phone.

It's done! I just cancelled my contract with AT&T.

The Captivate will go into my box of defective and obsolete cell phones never to see the light of day again.

Will never purchase another Samsung phone!

Does your GPS work? Can I have it? :D

The only thing as bad as Samsung's customer service is that of AT&T's. Word to the wise - if you are going to buy a samsung product - any product - buy it for what it is today with no expectation of any software or firmware upgrades. They (samsung) have no interest in public opinion, which is too bad. They make impressive products (generally speaking) but if you ever need them for help, you're screwed.

Actually, my first Samsung phone, SCH-i760, came with Windows Mobile 6 when I got it in February 2008 and a few months later Verizon released the Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade, which ended up being fantastic. 6.1 had Bluetooth voice dialing, something I am waiting on Froyo for.

Did anyone else notice that Samsung updated their user manuals on the Captivate site on December 19th to include an Installation Manual?

Samsung corporate and their engineers use Windows and they've grokked it - and they understood Microsoft's very comprehensive vendor program.

They're still learning about Android as an organization. They don't move necessarily fast, but they're moving with great conviction worldwide on Android.

I'm optimistic for an eventual success story here.

That installation manual is interesting - good catch!

It's sad that the intercept has gotten 2.2 before us. My friend has an intercept, and I'm not sure how that thing can even handle it. It's already kinda slow with 2.1. It's like a slap in the face to all US galaxy s owners.

It isn't sad to me if it isn't ready to be released. As the mod said, 2 days after we get it we'll probably forget how long we had to wait.

I understand that this post may not be to some people's liking, but I said good-bye to Samsung a few days ago after I flashed a custom ROM. Now I couldn't care less what Samsung does or when they do it. The ROM I'm using has put me in a position of having a fast, solid OS and has left me with absolutely no desire to make any changes to my current setup for the life of my Captivate.

I bought the phone on the day it was released and, as with many of you, have waited for them to show us some respect (read: communication). "Keep checking our Web site" falls far short of an adequate relationship with their device's customer base.

I hope that the official Froyo is to your liking and that any deficiencies are handled in a timely manner. Based on history...fat chance.

How can we tell if we have the latest firmare upgrades on the Captivate? Everytime I try to connect to the ATT server (wirelessly through the phone software update) I am told the connection failed. What is the latest version (12/23/10) and how can I see what My phone is running?

Although the question doesn't relate to Froyo, the answer is:

Latest official version: I897UCJH7
To check yours, go to settings, about phone.

Apps > Settings > About Phone
Scroll down to Baseband Version. Last three digits should be JH7.

Just read a report on PCWorld that Honeycomb is expected to be released the first quarter of 2011. Isnt it incredible that here we are waiting for FROYO, Gingerbread is already out and the next major iteration coming in just a few more months.

Is the real problem AT&T or Samsung? Be nice to know for future decisions...

It is Samsung (mostly), because none of the other Galaxy S' have froyo yet either. Samsung is always like this with every one of their phones, historically and apparently now too (google "samsung _______ update"...).
Don't get me wrong, AT&T has a "rigorous" testing cycle (which is laughable, given our GPS performance) and I'm sure it will take them slightly longer than the other carriers with all other things held constant, but on the other hand Samsung would know this and have it prepared with enough time for release on schedule (or make a schedule that accounts for it), if they cared about customer service at all- we will soon see if they do...

I made the decision the other night to flash to cognition. I had to reflash as I didn't follow all the directions and now I'm running a clean rom. To anyone like me who is worried about rooting and flashing, it's actually very easy. I abandoned ubuntu because it started getting complicated getting everything to work, but the root and flashing procedures I followed on youtube required no knowledge or even console commands. Everything went fine and now I don't have to wait for Samsung or AT&T.

You do supposedly void your warranty (I don't know if flashing back to stock and upgrading to the current settigngs would hide what you did or not) but if you can do on your own whatever the warranty would cover; who cares?

I do not regret flashing a custom rom, and I will be looking for reviews of the legit rom vs custom roms before I make a decision to back to legit.
