All Things Froyo

AndroidSPIN Breaking: T-Mobile Internals Confirm Samsung Is Holding the Android World Hostage

I saw this link in regards to the Vibrant, where basically Samsung is trying to get people to buy a new phone before they release the Froyo update for it's existing phone. It does feel like the US market is getting shut out of Froyo and greed seems like a perfectly good explanation to me.

I have had the inkling for awhile it was all about pushing their new devices. I got fed up and emailed customer support asking for the contact information for samsung mobile's corporate office since talking to their standard reps does no good. This is what I got in return:

Thank you for your inquiry.

This issue is one that is best helped through calling our Customer Support Center, as they can help you in this issue in a more timely manner than we could through email correspondence.

At your earliest convenience, please call Samsung Customer Support by phone at our toll free number 1-888-987-4357, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday, Central Standard Time.

Thank you for your continued interest in Samsung products.

Sincerely,

Technical Support

Rochelle"

I didn't email techinical support specifically but I guess they fielded it. Also more timely for who? I don't get off of work until almost 7pm. By that time I want to go home and have dinner. Not eff around with samsung. Also I'm sure they just want to get me on the phone so they can pucker up. lol

The funny part about the response is that the representative copied and pasted the text twice. I imagined someone sitting at a computer and clicking on a stock answer to send but I guess this person had a tremor.

"Samsung is making available an Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade for the Samsung Acclaim at US Cellular starting today. In addition to the Android 2.2 OS, this upgrade includes additional features as well. For more information on the Acclaim upgrade, please visit: http://bit.ly/fAcKKm

Samsung is also working to make the Android... 2.2/Froyo upgrade available to all U.S. Galaxy S phone owners as soon as possible."

I read months ago that Froyo would be available in the US after the other countries have theirs. It sure likes like they're doing what they say. I don't believe any of this has diddly to do with greed, but making sure it works and following their own process.

Or incompetence

Htc=win

I'm out of the stage of giving them the "We want to make sure we do a good job" excuse. I forgot the captivate was released in July. We're almost 6 months in and they came out of the gates promising that the phones would be upgradeable to 2.2. 6 months is a long time in the tech industry.

Incompetent. That is an excuse I'd allow them to have but it's iffy because they have devices that I'm assuming(with my admittedly limited knowledge) are very similar to our phones that have froyo on them.

My two front runners for reasons why there isn't any froyo is because they have put too much on their own plate so they have limited staff working on it or they are greedy.

Samsung and AT&T (and some other large carriers) have left a bit of money on the table due to their failure to provide froyo to their customers . . . I'd imagine a significant amount of money considering the quantity of phones manufactured. :)

The Samsung Media Hub is a total failure - still unavailable to AT&T users even though it was prominently shown on the homescreens of the phones from day one. Samsung certainly isn't receiving much revenue from this product. :p

TeleNav just announced that their navigation app has been updated - on AT&T it's known as AT&T Navigator 2.2. I'd imagine that the gps performance of the Galaxy S phones hasn't done much to increase customer subscription to this service - why pay for an app that would work marginally, if at all? ;)

Sony Ericsson has recently come forward to acknowledge mistakes they made last year regarding failure to support (update) their products in a timely fashion, and have promised to work much harder to fix that problem in the future. They admit that this has cost them market share which will take a long time to get back. :o

Samsung plans on selling 60 million phones in 2011 . . . they'd better start looking towards their customers satisfaction or searching out warehouse space to store all the unsold phones they're going to have.

That cognition rom looks like a big deal, the first to use the Roger's update? Would that make it more stable? Interesting.

It becomes more stable because it's not based on an old Eclair build or a European Galaxy S phone. This is the most native ROM for Froyo on Captivate that I have seen so far and should offer much more stability and performance than previous roms.

towards the end of my cognition 3.01 upgrade and gotta say, I'm not too happy with the splash screen. Reminds me of a bad Bruce Willis movie =P

I prefer the older splash screen. Not that I reboot that often but still heh

ooooh yay, it's done! Guess I'm done now and on the new flash.

Well how's this for a new line of BS.... I stopped in a local ATT store today to look at cases for my Cappy. While there I asked (knowing they wouldn't know any more than we do) when 2.2 would be out. "we're hearing February" .... I said yeah I've heard that one too, after hearing end of last year and other dates. The salesguy went on to say "well it's really not Samsung or ATT's fault, they've had 2.2 ready for a while now but it's been put on hold by the FCC". It was all I could do to keep from laughing in his face.

Hi guys, this is my first post :)

I have a Galaxy I9000 and live in Ireland, I recently upgraded to Froyo through Kies and I must say it is diabolical, the phone is about 4 times slower than it was, I have tried to root it but that won't work either. I will never buy Samsung again.

Be careful what you wish for guys, if anyone has a guide for root it please let me know.

Ta.

Both rumors point to the same thing, Froyo is ready to be released, but it's not being released in the US because of greed, corporate politics, or both.

Well, it seems that Samsung is the only manufacturer to be so greedy and conceited, and incidentally Samsung seems be the worst at writing code...

I happen to be going through the AT&T support site and tripped over this

(Answer Center | AT&T)

and saw this link with the heading

Send, Receive, or Delete a Picture, Audio or Video Message (MMS) with the Samsung Captivate (i897) w ...

The w ... (when clicked on this link is) with Android 2.2

WHAT?! This is directly in there support pages! Under i897 Captivate support!
