Apple 5 or Galaxy s3

That is just the stereotype of Apple=locked down, too simple, for your parents and Android=freedom, choice, power users only. It's bull.

1) Both platforms are mired in business deals and the lure of profits preventing the way the OS should be used. Don't buy into the "Don't be evil" marketing bs that Google preaches. This and the whole Droid marketing campaign are just as guilty of promoting a brand image as Apple and their ads and WWDC.

2) Both platforms are businesses. You can say Apple is evil and Google is Neo in the Matrix of mobile technology, but that's not the case. We all know what Apple does, so there's no point in beating that in.

Read this: Google's Andy Rubin fires back at Aliyun OS, says there's 'no disputing' it's built on Android | The Verge

Google stopped Acer from developing a Aliyun OS phone because it was a "non-compatible build of Android." Um... open source? What's that again? Free to use... as long as you use it the way we want you to use it? Since when does Google step in to prevent companies using Android? Slowly Google is turning the screws on other companies. The bottom line is that it's all business. That's it.

3) With rooting/jailbreaking, the power user/idiot division of iOS/Android is a pointless argument. And lots of Android users are not rooting and toying around with the finer details. I don't do that- all my friends who have an Android phone don't do that either and love their phones. And Android is easy to use- it's the menus and submenus for various options that can get confusing. Really that's it.

The bottom line is, don't buy into the marketing BS and get caught up in this battle between Apple and Google. Don't buy into the fanboy arguments- that's exactly what Google and Apple want you to do- they want you to be locked into their way of doing things without exploring the other options and making your own decision.

They didnt stop acer, they gave them a choice, Android or Aliyun. Acer themselves were tied to a deal with android and still persued Aliyun and got caught out and given an ultimatum. Thats hardly Google turning the screws. Its an Open Handet Aliance issue of which Acer are a member of.

Nice attempt at spinning it though

Yeah the whole Acer thing was properly explained.

If you wish to sell an android device, you can do so. If you wish to change android to add value and differentiate your devices from others you can do that too.

If you wish to still use the play store and other common android resources then you must not fundamentally change android - this means you can't change the API calls.. so lets say Android has a call that switches Wifi on/off, it looks like this:

ToggleWifi(bool onorOff)

That means you send that function TRUE or FALSE to turn wifi on or off. You need to leave that exactly as it is.
What Acer did was change it to:

TurnWifiOn()
TurnWifiOff()

Which as you can see is two calls, without the parameter.

A known API is very important to a developer, because they need to know how to make the OS do something. If different devices can be allowed to differ it makes their job almost impossible and means the operating system may behave unpredictably, therefore applications may crash or fail.
So in order to keep consistent behaviour and uphold the quality of the OS and the apps that run on it members of the open handset alliance agree not to change APIs. Look here: Open Handset Alliance

What Acer did was to change the APIs, so Google said to them that they will have to leave the OHA or revise the product. Acer chose to revise the product.

The amazon fire products are based on (heavily modified) android and they have changed the APIs, they are not a member of the OHA but are free to sell the product.

ICS runs fine on 1Gb RAM, but then our phones don't have the amount of carrier bloatware that you guys get.

Yes, ICS was made for 1GB of ram. Those with 512MB ram were left in the cold. But for *future* upgrades past Jelly Bean, I will be more setup for them with double your memory than you with double the CPU cores. It seems memory matters more than processor in much of the OS upgrades.

Jelly Bean which will be out soon for the S3, will totally blow Siri out of the water and be really useful. Google Now is one of the killer features of Jelly Bean. But for a comparison of just how bad Siri is compared to the voice search in Jelly Bean, you got to check out this comparison video:

Well, From my experience, Siri is much more entertaining :D I know asking siri random stuff, Is negating away from its original purpose but it’s still pretty cool, And yeah, 4.1 android will blow it out of the water, Thats what I was aiming at.

Maybe Samsung "rushed" the SGS3, Maybe they should have waited until the birth of 4.1
With out a doubt SGS3 is the mobile that everybody wants, but ended up with a shitty fruit product and can't afford/Be botherd to change mobiles :D

I personally think that the app store and iTunes makes people not want to leave, I have friends who have spent loads on music and apps and don’t want to change because of that reason. But hey ho each to their own ! I know google have their own, But......Apple owns in this area !!

It's easy for me to leave the apple iTunes store because it's very hard to use and limited if you're not a US resident. I prefer amazon for my books and music fix

Not bad ?

I have a new MacBook Pro and Ipad 3. I also have a Galaxy s3. If Apple had come out with more features and a bigger screen in the Ip5 I would switch, but the S3 outclasses the Ip5 in many ways. The display is beautiful. Battery life is superb and I really like having a notification light. I got the 32GB with a 32GB sim card, so I have plenty of storage and I can even add more if I want. It has never frozen up on me. When Jelly Bean comes( Verizon/Oct?) it will be even smoother. I have read about 10 books on the device and it works perfectly. Again, if the Ip5 was better in any way, I would switch, but the S3 suits me in every way. Plus, wireless charging is coming either this month or next.

I'm an admitted Apple Fan boy, iMac 27 inch, Mac Book Pro, iphone 4s and iPad2. I believe the Apple is starting to get worms in it. I've had my eyes on the S3 for a few weeks, now. The S3 blew me away, the iPhone 5 is a let down as far as I'm concerned.

I'll be getting my S3 later this week, already have a buyer for the 4s.

I'm curious as to why you consider theiFail5 Erm, iphone 5 a let down? Did you expect more in terms of hardware or other things? How about iOS 6?

(and no I'm not taking the piss)

I for one am not out to slate you, just curious, like I said. Seen a number of ex iphone owners join here and a fair few seem to be happy with the S3 once teething problems have been overcome (syncing, etc)

So what's your opinion chap?

Hahahaha I don't know if this is true but take a look at this video . This is what happens to the oblivious isheeps in reality

I was hoping for a larger screen closer in size to the SIII and a swype type keyboard for typing. If I had to use one word more in terms "hardware." On iOS6, I'll download to my 4s before shipping off, but I don't see it as a deal breaker not to move to SIII

to the OP.

ask yourself what you want to do with your phone. do some research on what each phone is capable of doing and decide which one is gonna meet your specific needs better.

and remember, these arent the only phones out there.
