Root Ask question's here (Dont flood the root topic, please)

So, the new OTA update won't let Universal Androot to work? I've been trying all morning to root my Ally and no luck. I used Universal Androot and the adb shell way but it won't give me "Success.. enjoy shell" or however that goes. I'll give X4Root a try.

UPDATE: I searched for "x4root" and found "z4root" and it definitely solved my problem. Once I installed the z4root.apk file I rebooted my phone and gave it a try and in atleast 10 seconds I was rooted. Woop Woop!

i have rooted phone with custom kernel (gnm turbo4) and i get kernel panic...i'm not even overclocking.

anyone recommend better kernel or stock ally kernel?

AND..if i were to factory reset while it has been rooted and with the custom kernel what would happen?

it is NOT activated. can i activate a plan using that rooted phone with my carrier?

THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE!!!!

here is a good kernel to flash
http://androidforums.com/getitnowmarketing/204838-gpl-lg-ally-kernel-2-6-29-6_gnm_oc.html
just wipe your cache and davilik after flashing it then install setcpu

FYI:a factory reset just deletes your apps it dosen't unroot the phone or delete your kernel.
Anyway i bet you can activate it if the esn number is good. if vzw dosen't want activate it due to a root problem you can always load the stock v6 rom or use the unroot feature of universal androot.
How-To: Flash Stock LG Rom

I rooted my gfs ally with universal androot installed velocity with rom manager, then I started getting an ota update so I used clockwork to restore the original rom and after it updated it would not let me flash velocity again, it gave me an error while performing privileged tasked. So I tried to unroot with universal, failed same error. Does anyone know what I need to do?
id just load the stock recovery then use the v6 downgrade (How-To: Flash Stock LG Rom) and apply all the ota updates after it reboots. id also format my sdcard in windows as well(due to apps2sd). when its finished root it with a z4root or somthing then flash velocity.

when i am doin push commands in windows run window it says 0 kilabytes in 3548 secs..or something like that...does this mean the info is not being transfered to sd card? y is this happening
check your firewall and anti-virus and make sure you run you cmd shell as an admin and that usb debugging is turned on. win 7 home premium works best

when i plug my phone into my computer, it doesnt notice its a usb until i turn off debugging, this happens on every computer or port i try.. not a big deal more of a nusiance

I am doing mine on a Mac, and it is my first time. But I get as far as the dollar sign and then everything comes to a halt. This is my log:

Ryan-Raymonds-MacBook:~ xMACx$ adb push asroot2 /data/local/
2152 KB/s (74512 bytes in 0.033s)
Ryan-Raymonds-MacBook:~ xMACx$ adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/asroot2
Ryan-Raymonds-MacBook:~ xMACx$ adb shell
$ /data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
[+] Using newer pipe_inode_info layout
Opening: /proc/4196/fd/3

Then it doesn't do anything.
If I let it sit, it will come back up with the: "Ryan-Raymonds-MacBook:~ xMACx$" like I'm starting all over. Can someone help me?

I flashed back to stock and got all the updates up to ZVC, now I would like to be able to flash back to this at any time. Does making a backup do the same thing as making a flashable zip? I would also like to know how to do a system dump.

root your phone with z4root and you dont need to do any of this mac stuff. just dl it then install it with astro.

A backup makes a folder, not a flashable zip that can be restored by selecting the following:

(In Amon RA recovery) backup/restore > restore nand backup > then select the backup you wish to restore. Obviously, you will need to wipe everything as you normally would before restoring a backup.

If you are using Clockwork, it's very self explanatory. Go to manage and restore backups and I'm sure you can figure out the rest. :p

So I'm considering rooting my recent vintage Ally to get rid of all the bloatware. Planning to use z4root to root the phone.
1. Can the phone then be "unrooted" with z4root?
2. Is it possible to reload the original LG Android 2.1 after I've gotten rid of some stock programs?
3. Will rooting prevent updating to Froyo (if it ever becomes available)?
4. What stock programs definitely should NOT be uninstalled, after I root the phone?

Thanks in advance, joel

1. Yes
2. Flashing the stock LG 2.1 will bring back all of the stock apps. Make a backup of the ROM after you remove the bloatware.
3. Yes, you will need to revert back to a completely stock Ally to receive any VZW OTA update.

Thanks motorsport.
2. How do I backup the rom after I remove bloatware?
3. If I revert back to the stock ally rom to install OTA updates, I assume that I will lose any saved data on the phone? Or do apps usually save user data to the SD card?

2. In the program ROM manager (free app, available in the market), choose to flash clockwork mod recovery, then choose backup current ROM. This will make a backup of whatever you are running at the time so it can be later restored if you have problems along the line. (You need root to do this)

3. Yes you will loose all phone data when flashing a new ROM (if done properly). Apps do not save to the SD unless you have apps2sd set up (I am personally not a fan of it, but some prefer it). Download the free market app called Titanium Backup, this can backup all of your user apps and system data. Again, you need root to use Titanium Backup.

If you are unsure of anything, ASK FIRST! There are plenty of people on here who can help, and it's better to be sure than end up with an LG paperweight. ;)

I've rooted the Ally and installed Titanium backup to remove bloatware. I've uninstalled everything that I know it is safe to uninstall, but there are still lots of things left that I don't know if it is safe or not. Are there any other lists like the one above that could tell me if some of these other things are safe to remove?

Hi all,

Im currently debating on rooting my phone for a couple reason. Mainly to get rid of all the crapapps that Verizon felt the need to add like FB Myspace Twitter City Id etc. But I have a couple questions before I even attempt anything.

1) Whats the deal with Flash Player? Ive been holding out and holding out for 2.2 even with the mixed opinions that we will or wont get Flash Player on the Ally. I want want want Flash Player, I am often guilty of forgetting my computer or having it somewhere where I dont get Wifi but have cell service and Im stuck bored out of my skull and unable to catch up on my tv shows. So if I root can I get flash player? or is there another type of downloading player thingermabobber that I can get that will enable me to get on diff sites or something to watch tv?

2) If I decide to root is there someone who is patient enough to literally walk me thru this step by step? Im not a total dork when it comes to not understand computers, I can hold my own, but Im a complete idiot when it comes to making sense of everything in this thread and the instructions one.

3) What are the major benefits to rooting my Ally? Aside from deleting the crapapps. A member on another forum is fairly computer and Droid knowledgable and is encouraging me to root but she is unable to walk me thru or explain to me anything regarding the Ally so Im hoping some fellow Ally users can help me out and inform my uninformed self.

Thanks in advance. Sorry for asking such dumb questions but I want to make sure this is something I want to do and can do before I even get my USB cable out.

Search for z4root on this FORUM (not the market). It's an attachment to a thread on this forum. It is very simple, just push one button and your phone is rooted. I just did this yesterday, works great.

Why not get z4root from the market?

Hmmm, I thought that was complete list.

What do you want to remove?

1. There is no flash support for the Ally. The Ally's processor isn't even supported.2. Use z4root. One click root app.3. Rooting allows you to flash recover images. That allows you to make backups/restore backups, flash roms and kernels. You can also remove crap apps and wifi tether your 3g. And more i can't think of atm.

Why not get z4root from the market?
when i did a search for z4root on the market, i got an app with only chinese/japanese characters, so i didn't know if it was what i was looking for. but like i said i found it attached to a thread here on the forum.
