I
I think that the current system works fine.

It does. The only caveat being a poor moderator to member ratio, as pointed out by OTD, which keeps needed reminders by mods few and far between.

Post reporting should be encouraged by us all.. but isn't said much during a heated debate because it just seems "finky," I think. We need to just set a good example, each one of us in addition to clicking that report button when things get out of hand.

Just to add my $.02

I think a help would be for Mod's to put in a Unthankful/Dislike/Thumbs down to the posts, like you see for the Thanks. A button to register the readers take on things, let alone if things get out of hand. Just a suggestion as I have absolutely NO idea what it would take to implement this. Forgive me for my ignorance. But seeing a hundred NO Thank You's on a user will certainly give weight as to whether or not a reader would even take a posting seriously or be disregarded.

This tool could be used indiscriminately to identify PROBLEM posts or posters who offend either fellow forum members or the rules. I found mbell to be quite abrasive (not to take sides, lol) but if the dislike button were available, the Admin's/Mod's could be free from being the bad guys and allow for the users to have some discreet input to opinion on who the trouble makers are. IF they wish to value Forum Users opinions ;)
(hehe, don't shoot me).

Ultimately, this Forum is controlled pretty fairly and is enjoyable and informative, all excellent qualities. And yes, at the volume it is accessed, it is a difficult thing to do. Keep up the good work...

:D
Regards...
FYI- http://androidforums.com/suggestion-box-feedback/73299-unthankful-dislike-thumbs-down.html

Any posts referring to this suggestion should be made in that thread.

So, just to be clear, we're done with the whole sexy pirate/ninja thing?

Too bad... :D

To address a couple of other comments:

(a) We don't have a "quota system" for reported posts, so each one gets as much investigation as it needs. I've personally spent over an hour on a single instance, going through not just a particular thread but the posting histories of those involved, before deciding if action was required.

(b) The only censorship on Android Forums is as per the Forum Rules.

Why not post this idea in the Suggestion Box & Feedback forum? I'm not sure if it can be implemented but it's certainly worth asking.

I got put in banishment time out for 3 days because I recommended to someone to read the User Manuel to get the answer to their simple question on how to remove a shortcut. I suppose that was considered argumentative and violation of the zero tolerance policy. Which I thought was kind of harsh seeing how I see profanity in threads and provocative almost XXX rated wallpaper samples in the Forum and people arguing why 1 phone is better than another.

I doubt this post will stay up for too long either.

The posting guidelines at http://androidforums.com/introductions/704-site-rules-guidelines.html point out, among other things, that we're to respond to posted questions with helpful answers targeted on the question; we're not here to merely suggest that the questioner should go somewhere else for help, such as to the user manual.

This site defines itself as a forum cluster with the goal of providing information and community for Android users, not as a clearinghouse or gateway to other sources.

When you see questionable content, use the button that looks like
report.gif
to report it.

Unfortunately, the Moderators cannot read EVERY thread and EVERY post. They rely heavily upon the users to read and understand the forum rules and also report posts that aren't appropriate!

Going through your old posts, it appears as though Frisco is correct with the reasoning though.

So who's gonna clue us in on what IOWA did this time to land himself on No-Posting Probation?

IOWA.JPG

(Besides, it's a good excuse to get this thread rolling again!) :D

dunno, but his pics to tell mpw off was hilarious...I was rolling and I have no clue what they were arguing about...

Ok, I've got to ask. Why did Iowa get banned?

i'm not trying to tell you how to do your job here, however would this question not be better served if it were to be asked within the confines of a secure staff room.
i'm sure the member of staff responsible would have happily obliged as to the reason of the ban without having to make a very public post. after all you are a moderator and it does not portray a very good image when a member of staff has to resort to making a public thread of this nature.

no offence intended as i am a mod / admin on several forums my self, however this is generally not how things are done on most forums i know.

OTD was not a mod when she started this thread, and actually does a great job in her new found role. She strikes a good balance between wielding her mod power, and just being a "common" member. AND, Iowa is in my opinion, one of the most controversial members on this site. He pushes buttons in hot topics all the time. It is difficult not to be curious as to why he was hit with the ban hammer.....

i'm not trying to tell you how to do your job here.. (proceeds to tell OTD how to do her job ;))

ThreeDog, as pointed out by 330D, OTD was not yet promoted to moderator at the time she began this thread with that query about Iowa; it is obviously not your fault that you did not know that, as you only recently joined these forums.

Incidentally, OTD did explain, in a subsequent post in this thread, her reasons for posting her question to begin with..

http://androidforums.com/lounge/68261-banned-2.html#post631408

But the reason I'm repeating what 330D has said, is that when I noticed there were new posts in this thread I expected that first post to have been edited since the time she became a mod.

The fact that it has not been changed is good for the thread and the forums because, like every other post here, it is a bit of "archived history" of what transpires here wrt members and now moderators.

fair do i was in the wrong, i'll own that and apologise.

thanks for the explanation, no offence was intended and i'm certainly not trying to disparage otd's good name within the forum.
