Root Bricked evo?

To make a long story short... I was having issues with 4g, and was instructed to flash a wimax.zip, I cleared cache, and dalvik, and flashed the .zip, I'm 99% sure it was the correct file to flash..., anyway.. it went thru the process, and said reboot to complete update.... I rebooted, and it came to the update screen (pic of phone with green arrows) and sat there for about an hour, before I finally pulled the batt, and rebooted, only to bring me to the same screen... I know I shouldnt have pulled the batt, but after an hour of nothing, I knew something was wrong, so here I am now, at that update screen, I tried to get into bootloader, but no go, brings me straight to the update screen....

So... am I really bricked? I have read some posts saying that if the phone turns on at all, its not completely bricked, and others that say if u cant get to the bootloader, it is bricked... So which is it? and where to go from here?

yeah i'm not sure what to tell you. but if you cant get to bootloader, you might be bricked. radios can take a while to flash. you are not supposed to pull the battery out no matter what. hope you have insurance or something.

oh snap... I cant even BEGIN to recall the last time ocn didnt have an answer for something.... but yeah, if you cant progress past this point, you just might be bricked :( ive yanked the battery during a rom install b4, but ive never messed with my wimax keys or anything like that, but i do know that you can permanently brick it if you pull the battery when doing that(hence the reason i just dont mess with it) Im not even sure if you can ADB into it in its current state. I think ocn is dead on with his summation. Sorry bout the bad news man. I do think that we should confirm with akazabam or novox or something... Ill see if i can get them involved here.

well the issue is there is no way to communicate with the phone in its current state. the only glimmer of hope would be to go into hboot, but with no access to it, it is bricked. maybe you can turn it on and let it keep running and it might pop out of it, but i doubt it.

Been lettin it do its thing for a while now... not doin much other than getting pretty hot.... gonna let it go till it catches fire, or comes out of it...lol
O well... what ya gonna do... I learn everything else the hard way, so why should this be any different :D

I do have the insurance, but I am under warranty, and since its stuck....

The local sprint rep did tell me I should root my phone... I said I was worried about the possibility of bricking it, and he told me you'd have to be a complete dumbass (guess he didnt know who he was dealing with;)), and that even if I did, I am still under warranty, and if it dont turn on, it dont turn on, so they have no idea what the problem was.... I'm hoping this to be the case, considering, if sprints stupid ota gb update, hadnt screwed my phone up as bad as it did, I wouldnt be in this humbling position as it is ....

BTW.... YES! I know you're not supposed to pull the battery during an update, but really, after an hour.... it wasn't gonna work anyway.... After that time, with my phone as hot as it was, it was almost dead anyway... When I put the batt back in after, I decided I'd just let it go till it killed the batt, and that was about 5 min later.....

lol nice well at least you have a rep you can got to for this. good luck:)

Do this:

1) pull your battery.
2) wait 30 sec
3) put battery in.

At this point, the phone should be off and remain off.

4) hold down the POWER and VOL-DOWN buttons at the same time. Hold them for at least 10 seconds.

Do you get the white HBOOT screen?

No boot screen, goes straight to the phone with green arrows before I let go of the buttons.... it actually only takes about 2 sec before it boots to the green arrows of death...lol

Verified it does not work by holding VOL UP and POWER either....

I did that to my phone twice, with no one to ask about fixing it. Here is what got me up and running again...
Hope that helps

Evo-less for now, but new one on the way :D

I'm half tempted to un-root and then update to gb, then re-root, just to get the new radios, wimax, etc.
It's cases like this I get nervous. I'm sorry my friend, another soldier sacrificed for the greater good. :(

you know you can just flash the radio combo right? i did it when it came out. pretty easy.

No reason to unroot for that. You can flash the radios(not necessary unless you have signal issues) without unrooting. Just make sure you have a charged battery and some patience.....it takes a few minutes and there is no progress bar so you don't know how far along in the process it is.

Ya.. no reason to un-root.... I'm sure I'm just a dumbass, and forgot something, or maybe my phone just had enough of life.... I WAS having 4g issues, b4 and after rooting.... the issues were just a lil different after rooting, and flashing roms....

If u are under warranty, or have the insurance (even better if u have both, then its 100% free replcement :)), then flash away.... worst case scenario... u will b w/o a phone for a few days... small price to pay for a lesson learned as far as I'm concerned.... Just keep in mind... the evo is on back-order nation wide, so expect 3-5 business days for a replacement, and 2 trips to ur local sprint repair store, which for me, is over 1.5 hrs away....

Now... if I wasnt under warranty, or didnt have the ins.... I would never had tried flashing any radios... but my warranty runs out ina few days, so I fig'd.... what the hell.... lol

I've flashed radios before, hell I did em on the Hero even. Just always makes me nervous. :)
I'll do it eventually, still getting good reception so I'm in no hurry.

im on a vzw prl..... but im in sioux falls south da-fukkin-kota so sprints coverage is crap out here.... i dont do much data on my device as i have a 50 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps up connection at home, so i really dont depend at all on my 3g(since 4g is non-existant out here) and i cant imagine that sprint will ever cry foul about my usage.... I guess Midcontinent Communications just has their s__t together as far as bband is concerned....

just be careful, mr ed got the boot from sprint.

Good god guys, you make this way too hard. If your phone is bricked. Throw it in the local lake (after keeping the sdcard and the battery), and call warranty and tell them you lost it.

I was going to suggest this, but if I'm not mistaken you have to pay 100$ deductible on the insurance to get it replaced. I think our friend here has a way to get a replacement for free.

Yeah, dont you get like 2 warnings first tho? I guess if that happens, ill just hafta hop onto my folks family plan and get a new Evo or whatever is gonna be replacing it (if they ever replace it i should say LoL) Im still shocked that this think is 15 mos old and HTC hasnt dropped a bomb like they did last May with our much revered device. I guess that either speaks to how good it is, or perhaps the fact that tablets are getting the main focus these days. Anywho, I still love my Evo, and wouldnt trade it for the thunderbolt, charge, x2 etc etc etc etc...

I'm happy to report that sprint came thru, and.... EARLY!!

They said 3-5 business days, and that was 2 days ago...lol Usually when they say 3-5 days, I expect a week....
Replacement was FREE, and is now rooted and running the kings alliance rom, and prolly the freedom kernel before long...:D
One thing I can say... already I'm noticing better batt life with this rom compared to the same rom on the old phone, couldnt have been my batt causing that, cuz I'm using the same one, so who knows, maybe the old phone just had enough of life!
Anywho.... Thanks for all the tips and comments guys, I'll try not to be such a dumbass with this one!
