Root [CDMA] Compatible ROMS With Different Hboots

I can confirm that Team venom Viper3D does work with 1.5 hboot s-off. Update 310 was designed for 1.5 and I am on this rom now.:)

Actually, Drop took Z3RD xl off line for a bit, promising to bring it back "soon." So whereas the link does not NOW take you to Z3RD, it did before and will again, when possible.

And now that I think of it, the AUG update of Z3RD WAS linked somewhere in the thread, bit not the most recent version.

So, this might sound really stupid, but I noticed that the 4EXT app on the Google Play Store is $3.00. Now, I have no qualms with supporting a developer by buying his app. I was just curious if this is necessary to use the 4EXT recovery? I know there is a three day trial app on the 4EXT website too.

My question is, would using the three day trial version mean my 4EXT recovery would stop working after three days? Would I be able to update to future versions of 4EXT recovery following the end of the three day trial? My gut says it should all still work and the app just stops working. I know I sound like a complete newbie here, even though I have been dealing with custom ROMs and recoveries since 2009, but I was always a ClockworkMod Recovery guy. Are there simply flashable zips of this recovery available somewhere? I would like to keep a back up of it, if I can.

I honestly can't answer this as I bought the paid version straight out of the box without using the trial version.

What comes to mind is the app itself would stop working. I don't see why the actual recovery would stop working.

Although someone that has tried the trial would be better to answer this question.

It's not necessary, but recommended to use 4ext. There are alternatives like twrp or clockwork mod (not sure if it's compatible with the 3vo as I've never used it.)

The app is not required at all to use the recovery. You can install the recovery for free from the website. You
can access it just like you would any other custom recovery that doesn't have an app. Reboot into bootloader and select recovery. Or use a rebooter app to reboot directly into recovery. The app just offers an interface to select options while your phone is booted and then it reboots you into recovery with your selected options.

One really nice feature of the app is that you can easily see when an update to the recovery is available and flash the recovery through the app with one click. So much easier than flashing through fastboot.

You can use the trial app to see if you like it. Like dragonslayer95 said, I believe it's 3 days and then the app simply won't work unless you buy it. The recovery itself is free and will continue to function.

I just grabbed this from the developer's description:

By buying this app, you not only get a feature rich application that lets you control, configure and handle the advanced features of 4EXT Recovery with comfort, you also contribute to the future of the recovery itself!

For a fully functional 3 days preview of all features, please download "Recovery Updater" available on 4EXT Development.

So after the 3rd day, the "advanced" functions would stop working. If the entire app became locked, I think the customer base would be in a big uproar over it. I do wonder how long free updates are given on the paid app. Nothing said about that.

Updates on the paid app are given until the development ceases.

The app itself doesn't get updated, the app notifies you when there is an update for the recovery.

Yes of course, the app won't revise itself--you have to download an update when available and apply it manually. But for the trial version, it has a built-in timer that shuts down functionality after it expires. I don't know how it manages this... you might be able to reset it by removing the trial app and installing it again, but that would be a pain over time.

I think it's nice of them that they provide an excellent fully featured recovery for free. The app is completely unnecessary but a little bonus if you choose to support the Dev. I think it's not very cool to discuss ways to basically steal it on an open forum.

Not to pick on anyone, I am no saint and have done my fair share of things like that myself. I just think it's not something to spread around for the masses, just one of those little secrets to keep to yourself ;)

I do see I was in the wrong for my post (considering I had only been awake for 5 minutes when I posted :p) though the app is definitely worth the $3 to support the dev.

Off topic

Hey Brian, would you wanna do some rom testing in a week or so?

As long as I have time. I've been pretty busy lately. What kind of testing? You mean compatibility for this thread?

Somewhat, I've gonna give building a crack within the next week or so. If the wife didn't take over the 3vo, wouldn't need a tester otherwise.

You better not brick my phone :p Test it on the wife's first!

I wanted to have a go at a rom too, but just haven't had the time to get into it unfortunately... Maybe one day!

Lol I'm still stuck on the re unlocking boot loader still.

Plus I'm just building from a stock ICS base anyway, not building from the ground up.

Found a ton of helpful articles/threads for new people to build/modify

Edit:

Well, I wanted to have a go at building but cant get the kitchen to run properly on the laptop. Another sign I need to give in and buy a new one Bleh :p

Thanks, everyone, for the information on 4EXT. So, I take it, there is no way to just freely flash the recovery and bypass using the free app from the developer's website?

Like I said above, I have NO issue with paying for the app to support a developer. I am actually asking for a friend who just got a Sprint HTC EVO 3D and wanted to try a different recovery other than ClockworkMod Recovery.

You can just go to 4EXT Development
And download 4ext recovery updater for free. This will install recovery and let you use the recovery. The paid app isn't required.

I meant like a flashable .zip file for the recovery or even a PG86IMG.zip file that I could flash directly from HBOOT.

Alright, I guess I am beating a dead horse. It looks like it is only available via the free app. Thanks for the help, folks. Cheers.

Hey Brian, can you use the fastboot flash recovery recovery.img command after root? Just trying to think of something for him :p

Sorry, I didn't understand what you were asking. There is the link to the PG86IMG version. If you just want the .img you can just extract it out of the zip.
