Help Connect via WIFI problems

you can do it by installing google android sdk.
OR
you can do it by installing connect bot or some terminal emulator on your hero and running the command.
If you'll run it directly from phone there's no need to type adb.. adb - is the utility from sdk.

Ok, tried that, using connectbot, but it's saying "shell: permission denied".

My phone isn't rooted. Does it have to be?

my is rooted, and it works.
I've intalled Better Terminal
then
su // most likely it's not needed
then
ip link set tiwlan0 mtu 1300

and thats it.

The only problem for now is that you'll have to enter this command every time you reconnect to wifi :( I still didn't found how to aplly this fix permanently.

Ok, I've now tried Better Terminal.

After the "su" it said "su: permission denied", but I put the "ip" line in anyway, and it didn't come up with an error. Does this mean it's done what it's supposed to do?

if this fixed the problem than yes :)
so the root is not needed!

Just a word of caution here....

Confirm your router's MTU before altering anything on the Hero, as if the device MTU is set to a larger figure you'll simply compound any problems.

nothing terrible will happen as the mtu setting will revert as soon as you reboot or reconnect to the wifi network

Well, there's not a lot of point in doing it if you don't do it properly. Make the MTU too large and you'll have a major fragmentation problem to deal with, making your connection worse rather than better.

but the fact is that changing mtu solved my problem.. I don't see a reason why not to try... Of course, like any other setting modification you should be very carefull and all that you do is at your own risk...
In fact I think that this tweak actually solves fragmentation problem but not creating it..

I'm not ragging on the solution. My point is that it will only work if you get the MTU correct, and that will vary depending on the network. If you don't know what MTU the router is set to then you may as well punch in random numbers and hope you get lucky. ;)

That's exactly what it should do. :)

The Hero is unable to obtain an IP address from the WIFI box if it is set in gateway mode and the dhcp server is on different server.
so I used static IP - that connected the HTC hero to wifi but it can't access tge net it seems the packets can't reach the default gateway, granted I entered that gateway value- which is not the same ip as my wifi gateway

The WIFI is acting as bridge. we have routing turned off because the main office router handles firewall and routing. the router has no blocking for any outbound devices ie no access control for outbound. the problem seems to be related to 2 possible issues:
1- DHCP client on HTC phone can't acquire an IP from a device other the WIFI. whereas regular laptop can.
2- Gateway setting for Static IP is not working because I am not able to access any ip address internally before I reach the firewall.

Hi,
I dont know how to fix your problem but just to let you know that mine is working in a similar setup to yours. Except its all under my control. It worked out of the box just by selecting the ssid and typing the pass phrase on a wpa2 wireless network.

My dhcp requests are getting through my wireless router to my firewall that is acting as the dhcp server. So there are no restrictions on the dhcp server having to be on the wifi router.

So I would think its something peculiar to your network setup rather than the Hero.

I hope this helps you get a bit nearer to nailing it down.

Ok the problem is the firmware on the WIFI router Linksys WRT54G V7 needed an upgrade to version 7.008. However after upgrading the firmware I had to reset the router to factory default and configure it. Problem is solved.

hi just got my hero yesterday, its connected to my wifi fine but when i toggle wifi off then back on it wont reconnect unless i go back into settings and connect manually is there something in the settings im missing so it connects automatically

i have had that issue as well but there is this one time where I gave it a lil time (couple mins?) and it connected automatically. how long did you wait?

still waiting still no
i think it may may be the bt home hub, when trying to reconnect it says it has remembered my router but that it cant find a signal.

my hero cant auto matically see my router but it can the neighbours, to connect i have to manually enter my ssid then my wep code.

any solution this is driving me mad

set tiwlan0 mtu 1300

I meant to post this follow-up earlier but didn't get round to it....

I've done a bit of digging and discovered that the default MTU for the Hero's wireless interface (tiwlan0) appears to be 1500, the maximum for Ethernet V2. If your router's MTU matches this, great. If not, alter Elastep's figure above to match the router and test.

Remember this isn't a persistent change; rebooting the handset will revert it to the default setting. Any improvement (or degradation!) is not permanent. :)

Gaanrowl, is your router's SSID hidden by any chance? If so try 'unhiding' it and retest - I was never able to connect automatically to my Draytek with a hidden SSID.

I have the same problem as lots of others -- temperamental wifi which finds an access point, gets an IP address from it successfully, and then refuses to do anything. This thread has now been active for getting on for 6 months! It's encouraging to know you're not alone, but really depressing to see that no-one seems to be getting any clear explanation of the problem from HTC (unless I missed it).

For the record, my war story is like this:
1. at home I have an ancient Linksys WRT4GL. Hero wouldn't connect to it using WEP, so I tried disabling WEP and then it worked. For about a week.
2. At work, we use Eduroam and lots of fancy Cisco kit. That has *always* worked fine with my phone. No problems authenticating and a good connexion.
3. I do a lot of travelling... sometimes the Hero will deign to talk nicely to the route I encounter in coffee shop or a hotel. Sometimes, often, it won't.
4. Just before Christmas, the Hero decided to play nice with my home router. I had changed nothing: it just worked for a whole day. But of course, the next day it wouldn't, and it hasn't since.

As several people have said -- a solution which requires you to reconfigure any router you come across isn't really a solution for a gadget which is supposed to be mobile!

Does anyone know if the Nexus behaves better in this respect?

I have problems connecting to WIFI too. My router is a D-Link DIR-655. However, when I changed my encryption from WEP to WPA.. My Hero connected flawlessly.

When I'm in campus, I am able to connect to the wireless but whenever I try to surf the internet, I get an error saying the data could not be loaded or something like that..

Market, email and Facebook and Opera Mini browser worked, but not my web browser (I use Dolphin).

This is how I made browsing happen:
1. Run Dolphin
2. Hit Menu
3. Hit down-arrow (right-most item)
4. Hit Settings
5. Scroll down and hit System settings
6. Hit Set home page and type 74.125.45.100 (thanks spiri!!!)

As you can guess, I'm having the same problem. Here are some further details about my problem:

I can connect to my WiFi router (MS MN-700) and it gets an appropriate IP address.
No web sites work, except for Google for some reason.
Apps that use web services (over HTTP) don't work.
Most data apps don't work, except for Gmail for some reason.
I cannot SSH (from the Hero) into any external servers.
I can SSH (from the Hero) into a computer on my local network.
I can ping both my router and home computer from my Hero.
I can ping my Hero from my home computer.
I can ping www.wikipedia.com, but cannot go to the web site.
The phone works perfectly fine at work; but not at home.

What I think is truly puzzling is that both Gmail and Google work, while NOTHING else does. Why would these 2 be treated specially...

Well, I went through HTC support and got the; "hard reset or return to carrier" answer. Ugh... Seeing as how the Hero has no problems communicating within the LAN, I would assume the problem lies in routing traffic to external IPs. Even with a static IP set, with correct gateway and subnet mask settings, the phone couldn't access external sites, so I don't think it is having issues getting either of these via DHCP.

Regardless, I think I'll probably buy a new router and see how it goes (my router hasn't had any "updates" in several years and is not easily hackable). I think this is a problem that'll need to be fixed by HTC, so hopefully we see an update at some point which will address this. They promised us Android 2 afterall...
