Root Custom recovery on x!!!!!!!

Thought he said it had nothing to do with the recovery? now he's saying you need to install it via the recovery?.............

I think he was saying that it wasn't linked to anything thing, that he got this himself

for people that don't have bootstrap recovery(and for some who do) they need to figure out how to get into recovery

You referring to the masses who can't perform the battery pull to get into recovery?

I assume you could just hit the easy button to get into recovery to install this thing too...

ok the battery pull to load to get into recovery works, i shut the phone off and turned it back on, pulled the battery out when the red eye showed up and it booted up into recovery

I was just teasing but yeah there really is no reason to worry about that unless you are in a bootloop:D

Yeah but we need to know how to get in this thing 100% for sure in case it happens any time. I still can't figure out an exact timing for this thing, and why he didn't mention this on his blog about it

EDIT: Battery pulling at the droid eye did work this time, but will we even get the red eye if it's bricked/in loop/messed up any other way?? Would the custom recovery even boot up in this case?

Thats the thing, koush is smart enough. He made it so that when android isn't booting right and you pull the battery it boots into recovery. We are trying to fake a failed boot so its not going to be perfect everytime

Ok... So what I've got so far is that you root your phone, then you install the bootstrap and run it to create a system back up (basically), then if you restart your phone and make a failed boot, it will go into recovery allowing you to install custom ROMs minus the kernels and such?

Is that all that has happened in the past 2 days basically?

Root Phone
Download Bootstrap
Hit the Bootstrap recovery button after opening app
Hit Recovery reboot (the button next to the one you just punched)
It will boot you into recovery mode where, as of now, the only thing you can really do is backup your system. Until tomorrow, I guess.

To get into recovery mode without the use of an app, you pull the battery during the normal boot sequence (about 15s after the M appears). Then pop battery back in and start it up and it should bring you to recovery mode.

Thanks guys, we finally figured it out for sure. I was still just curious about the custom recovery boot when you really did brick your phone, but it sounds like it will boot into it no problem if this happens (since we are just mocking a failed boot right now).

:)

Hmmm, I noticed an update for Bootstrap on the market page (AppBrain notified me)....I downloaded the free .apk, so does anyone know where I would get the updated .apk outside of the market?

I backed up my system. :D I'm so excited. I've never installed a custom ROM on any Android phone as technically, this is me first Android phone. I had the Incredible for a month and swapped it out for this guy. I've been excited to install new ROMs for it ever since reading about the Droid and all of it's amazing customization.

Also, I have a question about this. When it restarted, it said "Clockwork started" and proceeded with "Can't open /tmp/recovery.log." Is that supposed to happen?

It seems that koush didn't mean to steal anything. I bought koush's app (after using the free version) and at $2.00 bucks, I'll pay for Alldroid's solution as well. I'll support the devs who do what I can't and so should those in the 'community' that can.

OK, so does anyone know if we will lose root after installing the 2.2 leak from P3droid? I've looked all over the place for an answer and can't find anything.

Not sure, but let's assume you do. If you have bootstrap, you can just revert to 2.1 rooted if you want---or so I think. Right?

i couldnt agree more. i think everyone in the community that use it should donate. i wouldnt even say those that "can." i would venture to say that anyone using a $200 smartphone, spending a minimum of $950/year on service, can afford to spend $2.
but that's just me. who am i to say what someone should and shouldnt do? the ability to use this custom revocery and nandroid backup would be a bargain at 10X the price. i'm not going to get into whether what he did was right or wrong, but even with a "borrowed" busybox, i'm beyond impressed.

I just heard from BBCrackman(an admin at MyDroidWorld) that we will lose root after installing the 2.2 leak. I followed up by asking if we could regain root, but haven't heard back yet. I also asked him if say, we want to go back to 2.1 because they figured out a way to get Froyo and keep root. I'll let you guys know when I hear back.

Would this change anyones mind on flashing the leak if we were unable to regain root. Just look at those who flashed the 2.1 leak on the Eris.

Just got word back from BBCrackman, as of now we will NOT retain root after installing the leak, nor will we be able to root once we have installed it.

So we can't restore to back to today's settings via bootstrap and regain root if we wanted? I thought that was the whole point of this recovery deal....or am I interpreting you incorrectly?

i think he just means cant regain root while using 2.2. (for now, at least)

after reading through alldroid and mydroidworld it seems that 2.2 can be rooted using the same exploits as 2.1 (on the X) just a few extra things need to be done.

So we should have a fully rooted 2.2 in short time

I may own the only X out there that won't boot into recovery lol....The reboot into recovery button on the bootstap app does not work for me and neither does battery pulls at 15 sec after the M logo or waiting for the eye. I have tried random pulls at various points through the boot sequence and nothing. We don't have an app other than Koushs that I could attempt to get into recovery with do we? Thanks for your help guys
