Root CyanogenMod 7 Unofficial Beta 5 02/20/12

It is a possibility that you have a corrupt download. Download the CM7 zip again.

Just for good measure, I would use Odin to take it back to rooted stock.. (I WOULD USE EJ06 SINCE CM7 DOES NOT UPDATE) I would then install the CWM update.

SPH-M820-CWM-5027-UPDT-FIXED2A.zip

Then install CM7 (A NEW COPY) and then install 1 of the OC kernels.

Let the phone boot up completely after each individual flash.

One more thing, just to make sure that you cover all of the bases...... I would also wipe the sd card after using Odin to take it back to rooted stock. Then I would repartition the card once CM7 has been installed.

I don't know what kernel you are running but I ran the NON-EXT. version. I used S2E to transfer my apps to the sd card and it worked like a charm. Very very smooth running phone. Didn't even need to mess w/ any of the new SWAP stuff.

Good luck and I hope you get it working.

Yeah, I had already tried all that right after I made the original post and had no luck, did it 3 times to be exact...I just don't understand what happened it's been running smooth for close to a month and yesterday it just started acting up.

It's just strange because I didn't install any new apps or themes or make any changes to the system and it only does it on cm7 not ej06, fe16, fe19, or ct mod.

But I appreciate your advice.

Thanks

CM7 is what I've been using for months now. No complaints.

However, I did notice that when it is connected to my truck (factory bluetooth), only the battery level shows a percentage... the signal strength is always zero (phone itself shows strong signal).

I was playing with HalfAssROM today and saw that the truck's display showed both the battery percentage and the signal strength. Interesting.

Anyhow... doesn't affect the use. Just weird seeing the antenna symbol with no bars on the truck's display.

Where can I get katokernel?I don't see it here in the thread
Edit:is the /data partition still mounted on the sd-ext with kato?

Just a heads up. If you are running a slower sd card, you may wanna use the non-ext version of the kernel and just run S2E from the market. I was even running a class 10 card and decided to run S2E. There is a big difference in the speed that you'll notice. S2E does away with almost all of the lag too. I've talked quite a few people in to doing the same thing and all are very happy with the results and can tell a big difference in speed and responsiveness. ;):D

i got a kingston micro sd card from the flea market a while back... its kinda old, but it works fine with sd ext

That may be so but it'll run even better with S2E. Trust me. I experimented with it off and on for months. :D
You won't have as much room on your internal but I had a lot of apps on my phone and still had over 80mb's free which is plenty.

This is awesome Hroark! Will download now. Thank you!

No doubt. I absolutely love this ROM. :D

lmao!! What happened LV? How could you tell he was spam? I see that his comment has been removed too.

The telltale 4 images after his post and the fact that all 6 of his posts were in 3 min, and all contained said pics...

Short answer, I'm on here too much... Lol

So I just install s2e then the non-ext kernel after wiping dalvik?will I lose all my apps?

Yup (you will lose your apps), you should start over, or you will end up with a bunch of mismatched data (and potential problems)

Edit-i had to use kouma's sdext-formatter to format the partition to ext4 (even though it was already ext4)

As LV said, you will lose all your apps. I always start fresh when installing S2E.

1)Install CM7
2) Partition sd card
3)Factory reset.
4)Install kernel
5)Install S2E and set it up. After install, go in to setting and check all boxes.
6)Reboot, open up S2E and check all boxes except data/data. You can check it if you would like but I find it runs better when it's not checked.
7) Install apps.
8)You now have 1 bad ass, fast as heck phone that will not get updates.

Hows the battery life compared to my current setup?

I went back to using S2E after trying out the kernel methods with CM7.

Nothing wrong with the sd-ext kernels but good old S2E works great for me.

This is not your Grandfather's S2E, it has been updated since I first tried it with CM7. Much improved,

Ok everyone, I've been testing different swap schemes on cm7 for quite a while now and this is what i got..

SWAP
We can't disable internal /data and turn it into a swapfile like CTMod. We have a different busybox and it's just not in the cards for us. Don't try. let me save you the trouble of having to restore your system. Every time I tried different methods I broke my OS and I'm pretty sure I've tried every method. Koumajitsu even helped me with explaining how he did it.

However, I've found that having a swap partition on your sdcard, the same size as the ext4 partition does get snappier when the swap is up to 3/4 full. after that it gets pretty laggy and will slow your phone way down. (especially your browser) As always, the larger your partition size, the longer it will take to fill up and the faster your card is, the faster it will be as well. I recommend at least a 4GB class 4.
I'm running a 16GB class 10 w/ 2GBswap 2GBext 10GBvfat

So in being a big user of linux and lots of reading, I have found a way to clear your swap partition when it gets full without rebooting so your system can resume it's snappiness.

Whenever, you notice the lag, confirmed by running the
Code:
free
command in term. emulator or a shell. you can run these commands to clear the partition and start fresh:
Code:
swapoff /dev/block/mmablk0p3
mkswap /dev/block/mmcblk0p3
swapon /dev/block/mmcblk0p3

then if you run the "free" command you will see under "used" will be 0.
Clearing swap (if not done like this) can be problematic because you will actually kill running processes that have been swapped over. that is bad and you will reap the results.

So, for us Prevail CM7 users, I have come up with a solution of my own to do this quickly. With the help of [Monster], I made a script for Script Manager with a few options to fully manage your swap settings and clear it.

SCRIPT
Some things you should know first:
1. swapon doesn't stick through a reboot so when you first boot your phone it will not be using your swap partition. I can make an init.d script to set swapon for you all if you like but i haven't yet. Just having the script works for me.
2. Using the script to set your swappiness does stick through a reboot and is global. When I say global, I mean it sets the swappiness for your sdcard partition and for the compache section in your RAM(I believe, hroark13 could tell us for certain). Check out my post above if you dont know what compache is^

The script gives you 4 options:
To clear the sd swap partition or not.
To set swappiness value in increments of 10 or not.

It works perfectly and if you make a script manager widget for it, you can get to it pretty quickly. It's pretty self-explanatory so I wont be answering a lot of questions about it. That is why I'm not making a thread about it. It's pretty simple. If you do have a question please don't post here. Just send me a pm.

Suggestion:
My best results are that you leave compache enabled. Just reduce it to 10% when using your sd swap. Default settings are 18%. Also I've had the best results with leaving the default swappiness to 20. please feel free to play with it and find your best results for swappiness and post them here if you like.

Put it on your sdcard
open Script Manager and tap it
give it su permissions
hit run

Hows the battery life compared to my current setup?

My battery life was pretty good when I ran this setup.

@ Mavrikmeercat- LoedVincent and I played with swap for days on CM7 and really couldn't get it hooked up to where I could tell a big difference. I honestly thought that my phone ran much better just using the S2E setup minus data/data. I could really tell a huge difference when I started applying the themes. The lag all but disappeared.

That's just my phone though. As we all know, each phone can react differently when running the same setup. For those of you that are new to CM7 and the Prevail, I suggest you try all the methods and judge for yourself what works best for your phone. Don't be scared to try them.... it's a good way for you to learn different things about your phone. Just remember to ALWAYS MAKE A CWM BACKUP BEFORE STARTING.:D;)

@wetbiker.soooo much snappier.I followed those instructions.I'm impressed.beautiful.

Glad you like it. This is the best setup I've found for CM7. Like WyElkins mentioned above, the S2E app has came a long way since last year. It's alot more stable than it used to be. Nice huh? :D:D

If you decide to run themes, you don't have to worry about them making your phone lag anymore either. That was a huge plus for me.;)
