Root Darktremor A2SD for Prevail [Updated 5-7-12]

ok i give up on this and will use link2sd i tried to get it working 5 timeso so far and no go

am i supposed to unmount /data /system before installing
and is koumakernel supported?
at first i unmounted /system and /data then installed a2sd and in the app drawer was an icon for it but when i clicked on apps are on sd card it said the kernal wasnt supported
i reformated and reinstalled ctmod 2.3 then left /system /data mounted when all said and done i went into the appdrawer and there was no gui icon for a2sd
sorry i did not help sooner.
if cwm reads "- mount /system" then you're not mounted yet. cwm displays the intended action. so it will read "- unmount /system" and "- unmount /data" when you're ready to install the zip.

if link2 works on your phone, this will work.
as long as you have root it works with any kernel including stock.

I am rooted. CTMOD 2.4. CWM installed. 16GB class 10 card with 1024mb partition with swap set at 0.

When I try to run commands from terminal, I am getting a lot of Permission Denied messages. Is that normal?

a2sd does not show in my apps pages. But I knew it was there somewhere as Titanium showed the partition with "(a2sd)" AND I am able to run the app via terminal. But not sure if it is actually making any progress for me as I see many permission denied messages, as mentioned above. I did not remove link2sd until after I installed this. How can I find out if this is actually working properly or should I try to flash it again from start? When i use CWM to create the partition does it matter that I had one before or did it do a complete format and creation of partition?

Sorry for all the questions! The help is much appreciated!

Edit: This looks important and can't remember what it asked me...

sorry i did not help sooner.

Wonder if I need to do this again. If so, I assume that if it says "- mount /system" to tell it to do so. Reboot in recovery and when it comes back we should see "- unmount /system" and "- unmount /data"? Or am I good to go since I can run from terminal? Am I looking for probs when there really isn't any?

Many thanks from a noob...

Edit: It was 5am when I last posted and had been up all night. Now that I am up again I did some further testing.

Appears to be working sorta...Stats after installing....

System Rom: 168 MB (67.5 MB free)
Internal: 167 MB (80.6 Free)
SD Card: 14.9 GB (14.3 GB Free)
SD Card (a2sd): 959 MB (935 MB Free)

After installing 25mb game...

System Rom: 168 MB (67.5 MB free)
Internal: 167 MB (79.8 Free)
SD Card: 14.9 GB (14.3 GB Free)
SD Card (a2sd): 959 MB (935 MB Free)

So, if I had to guess, I would assume that it is in fact installing apps on SD card automatically. Just not on the smaller partition as intended. How can I fix this?

I wonder if this all goes back to me not uninstalling link2sd beforehand? Might be worth adding to OP as it seems to be a reoccurring theme in the thread. I am not one to read the whole thread until I have problems and assume the OP has all info needed...Understand that these things are a work in progress sometimes. Just a recommended edit.

Edit 2: Have added a number of other apps today and latest...

SD Card (a2sd): 959 MB (903 MB Free)

It appears I am good! Sweet!

yes this defaults to apps on sd with ext4 roms. ctmod is ext4.
it won't install apps on the fat partition. did you refresh titanium after you installed the 25mb app?

need more input.

what else have you changed on your device?

This is the first mod I have done on my phone other than rooting it. I went through this tutorial step by step and everything went good, other then the sd not mounting..... Should I redo it all, or would that possibly brick my phone?

you can install koumakernel. stock kernel doesn't support init.d scripts which are required for this to work properly.

what is the exact error you are having? i would like to try to fix it to work on the stock gingerbread kernel also.

Hey Inigo, you killed my father.... lol Kidding man.

Just want to say thanks for this. Been using A2SD with CTmod 2.4 for a week with no probs since I initially installed both. Great combo, lightning fast phone.

But I have a couple of questions for you. I use the original 2GB sd card that came with the phone.
How do I reformat the card to it's original state, the approx. full 2GB. How can I erase the ext4 I created if I want to down the road. Thanks in advance.

I made a complete backup and odin image of the way I have my phone currently set-up and then restored to Chin Cheka's GBJ06 image so I can install and test the latest CM7 beta using my current sd card.

just plug your sd into a computer and use something like easeus partition manager to remove the current partition scheme and create one large partition when you want to.

if you change cards, cwm will backup and restore your ext partition so you don't lose any apps.

glad it's working out so well for you.

The thing is earlier in the day I used Paragon Partition Manager and it only recognized the fat32 (1.3GB) partition that I have on the card. It did not see the ext part. Are you familiar with this software?

many windows file management programs do not see linux file systems, as he said try easeus that is one that is known to work.

Yes I am aware, thanks but over at XDA , Paragon Partition was recommended. Someone used it to erase an internal ext4 partition on an android phone... I will try easeus.

Have an 8GB card. Does the info below sound correct ?

Under storage I have 116MB free.

I set the partition size to 1024 and swap 0.

Apps are on SD in the program settings.
Zipalign on boot is OFF
Swap is deactivated

Did a few updates and installed an app. Went down to 106mb internal memory. Is this normal?

.

ok, sounds good, I mentioned it because not everyone is even aware of linux file systems :) Not to belittle you or anything.

Very true. Thanks again. Cool. I understood what you meant. No hard feelings whatsoever. I am aware of you and many others presence here on this forum and what you all have provided. I remember watching a vid that you had made early in the summer of the Prevail once it was rooted. I purchased my Prevail within days of when interdpth rooted and provided the tool. I've been reading/lurking the forums ever since until recently decided to sign-up.

Now back on track. I am so stuck and riddled to why after using Mini tool,Paragon Partition Manager and now Easeus, that I cannot for the likes of me manage to see the ext4 partition I created in CWM5 to use for A2SD.
I'm using the 2GB stock and all managers only view the 1.32 GB Fat32 Primary partition only. Any help someone can provide will be much appreciated.

you could move dalvik with the app but it's not needed if you're happy with the internal space left. otherwise it looks right.

does it show an unknown partition?
are you mounting through the phone or with an external reader?
i don't really think it matters but you never know.

Everywhere that I have read on google says there should be an unknown partition viewable where the sd card is mounted. I only get local drive (C) and the the sd card (fat32) present on the managers and nothing else. This has me bewildered...
I have tried all programs on both usb plugged-in phone and card reader to no avail.

EDIT: Got it! Just clicked in my head! I have Windows 7 64bit so I right clicked the program and then went to Properties>compatibility>checked Run program in Windows XP SP3 and voila!
I now see "Other file system" and the 488 mb size part. I was desperately looking for. Thanks anyhow Inigo!

I'm going to ask you another question now. I have the dalvik on the ext4. and went back to rooted EJ06 with CWM5 yesterday from CTMod 2.4 to mess with CM7. What will happen if I erase this? The phone runs proper now. If I decide to leave it alone and change mods will the phone function properly?

I was at 106mb yesterday. Installed a bunch of apps, now at 44.71mb internal storage. I though the main memory wouldn't go down at all ?

Thanks..

Remember besides the actual apps there is the davlik-cache and the the configuration settings an associated things.
You can move the davilk-cache to sd but in this version of a2sd the config settings stay on internal so the more apps the more internal is used. Though if the davilk is on sd its pretty minimal.

this moves app and dalvik-cache folders to your sd-ext and leaves a link to them on your internal memory. it also leaves your texts, emails, contacts, and the data used by your apps on internal memory. there is a newer version of this script that will move the app data as well but so far i haven't had the time or the luck to get that to work on a stock-based rom. that version (2.7.5.3beta4) will work with the cm7 roms for prevail.

What exactly does a2sd do.does it put apparently on your SD card or what?
i guess the same answer as above.

. Thanks anyhow Inigo!

glad it's worked out.

if you try to use dalvik as ext4 with the stock kernel the phone won't recognize it. ext4 support is added by kouma and hroark's kernels but sd-ext has to be ext2 for stock. i don't know if that's on the first page. i haven't tested that since gb came out. i think koumajutsu had a kernel out by the end of that day so it wasn't an issue.

when you delete the dalvik-cache, no matter where it's placed, it gets rebuilt on startup. you want to rebuild it when changing roms.

also, flashing back to stock, although it is more fun, isn't really necessary for either of those roms. they format out whatever you just flashed.

EDIT: damn. late again.

Just make sure you don't move everything to the SD card, then decide you need to partition it again... Ahem, I forgot to move it BACK to internal storage and let's just say there were a lot of apps that went out the window. Although it did cut down on what I reloaded...maybe I'm on to something LOL :)
