Desire HD Battery Thread

If people could use the configuration I posted, would help :)

Anything over 1 day IMO is a bonus :)

I've searched and the only config I can find posted by you is to "turn off the Mobile Internet and WiFi".

I have one question for you though, why did you buy a DHD when it sounds like all you need is a mobile phone with a keypad for dialing numbers?

It is not right for the phone to only get 16 hours of battery, unless you turn off ALL features, and even then, only get 24 hours. My 3 inch 5800 with all features turned on would give me 5 days battery, and apart from the size and processor speed, there isn't much between them.

We should not be accepting this as "how smartphones these days are".

In order to keep forum in order and not spammed in every post about the words of "battery", I'm going to list some I have tried over the course of couple of days.

I suggest everyone else try techniques and report them in..Appreciated if you could put them in the format below

Code:
Uptime Length: (How Long yout battery lasted)
Accellerator:
3G Or 2G:
Wireless On:
GPS On:
Automatic Brightness:

Misc:
Uptime Length: 1.25 days and then went to 15% battery
Accellerator: Off
3G Or 2G: 2G
Wireless On: Off
GPS On: Off
Automatic Brightness: Off

Misc: Music playback with normal settings (no dolby or SRS) for 30 mins

Would it not be a good idea to put the service provider in as well?
I.e.
T-mobile (UK)

I feel this is important information as if the phone switching from 2G to 3G or there is poor coverage, this can have an effect.

Here are my stats.
Uptime Length: 11hrs
Accellerator: On
3G Or 2G: 3G
Wireless On: Off
GPS On: Off
Automatic Brightness: Off
(15%)
Operator T-mobile (UK)

20 texts a day
No Calls
3Hrs Internet usage
1Hour games/App usage

Uptime Length: 32 hours (with 40% remaining but charged it as i knew i would be using it a lot the next few days)
Accellerator: on
3G Or 2G: switched as needed
Wireless On: as above
GPS On: as above
Automatic Brightness: set off and to 15% but will do a test with it on for the next run

Misc:
As i have posted before i use the phone as a phone, i only let mobile data and wifi be swtiched on when i need to use them and switch them off after, also when I know i will be with out signal for a while i switch to airplain mode

will post an update on sunday ish

I want to calibrate my DHD very much, but I can't as I have S-OFF, so when it is turned off and I plug the charger, it boots into recovery :/
Any idea?

I made a small test

set display never turn off, set brightness to highest and set background to black
it used 10% battery in 32 minutes

still highest brightness, white background
10% in 32 minutes

than brightness to lowest
10% in 74 minutes

there were no icons or widgets on the screen

What do people do when going to sleep? Before having a smartphone i used to leave the phone on 24/7. Even charging it while on, basically it was never off. Is that still fine with phones like this?

Do you all turn it off before bed and then on again the next morning? I mean it must do something to battery life. My dad owns a desire and turns it off each night, but then he hardly uses his phone so the battery lasts days.

Is it worth buying a new battery? I was thinking the Mugen 1300mAh that gives an extra 8% or the cheap 1500mAh battery of eBay?

Another 50 mah?

Nah. Unless your planning on charging them both for long days out, or nights away from home etc.

No as a replacement to the stock Desire HD battery. The extra 8% could be useful. Also it seems as though my battery is draining A LOT in standby too.

My battery was dropping 2% every 8 hours whilst on standby and now its dropping 10-15% an hour. The 1500mah is only

Hi, I'm new to this forum, having never owned an Android phone. However I'm about to order the DHD, but I was concerned about the stories about poor battery life, My current phone is a Nokia 5800, which goes into the car charger for 45 mins in the morning and again at night, other than that it never needs charging.

I realise that the DHD is a smart phone and therefore will use more power, but that begs the question, " If I know that, why don't HTC?" Not only did they not put a bigger battery in than the Desire, they actually put a smaller one in. On a scale of 1 to 10 how stupid is that? 11 or 12?

What's the point of buying a phone like this if you have to switch so much off? That said, I'm still going to order it, so how dumb does that make me?

for me it is the best smartphone nowadays.
just buy a battery like this: Mugen HTC Desire HD Battery Extended Battery - 1800mAh

My configuration varies if you read through the post .

I turn on mobile internet and wifi along with GPS when I need it. I don't play games and listen to music all day like most.

Also have screen brightness down to acceptable levels as well, etc.

..
Onto your question why I bought the phone.

Basically I have large hands and I cannot push the numbers in clear enough. Dell Streak was too big, and 4.3" is the biggest phone on the market at the moment and also very usable.

Not to mention I was due an upgrade

Not to mention that i'm a tech freak too ;)

Would it not be a good idea to put the service provider in as well?

I'm on Orange UK and have the roaming set up :)

Can you actually prove that it offers better performance?

Probably not, because its down to HOW YOU USE THE PHONE.

Well a higher capacity battery would give you much more battery life along with cutting down on widgets. HTC should really make a new battery with at least 1400mah capacity and maybe use lithium polymer instead of lithium ion.

Android... please tell me you're not some kind of spambot.

A battery's capacity is best measured in Watt-hours, which equates to volts x amps x time. But it's common to take voltage out of the equation and say how many mA a battery can provide for an hour. So 1350 mAh equates to 1.35A for an hour or 135mA for 10 hours. But this is very, very approximate. But say your phone is drawing 135mA, with a replacement 1400mAh battery, it would last for an extra 22 minutes... 10 hours plus 22 minutes. So is it a worthwhile advantage? I'd suggest generally not.

And having a higher capacity battery cuts down on widgets? Duh?

And please do explain the chemistry behind your statement regarding battery chemistries. I suspect you might fund that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Well its obviously not worth upgrading from 1350 to 1400 but it would be from the DHD's 1200 to 1400/1500. Plus an update from HTC would help a lot by turning HTC sense, WiFi, live wallpaper etc of in standby.

I don't know the full the chemistry behind it of the top of my head.

right update as i said i would

Accellerator: Yes
3G Or 2G: 2g, 3g as needed
Wireless On: On as needed
GPS On: On as needed
Automatic Brightness: Off set to 25%

Misc: this is over the weekend, I will not charge it untill it needed it, but again this is with careful usage and making sure that I use the phone when I need to. Also Im on orange in the UK links below for bat usage and bat remaining at time of posting

Uptime means the time since the phones been on?

It definitely doesnt mean the time since the battery was last full. Well at least not on mine.

Uptime in our stats means since when the phone was unplugged, the menu uptime means how long it has been since the phone was "cold booted".

I will say one thing for this "THE ANDROID" you don't seem to realise that ALL smartphones from the past few years will die in a few hours if you constantly use them and have them checking updated etc.

Obiously they will but my DHD drains 2% battery every hour in standby. After 4 hours of web browsing, the phone is below 10%, which is rather lame.

Well it must be the way you have yours set up as I have mine set and as I have said above I get a LOT more battery.

anyway more updates:

pics taken last night before I plugged the phone in :

Bat usage: http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/9587/s5000733.jpg
Bat left : http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/8220/s5000734.jpg

I could have gone another night without charging but I know I need to use it today, so to be on the safe side.

All the settings are as my previous post

EDIT: Just thought about the "usage time" from the htc site:
Talk time:
WCDMA: Up to 320 mins
GSM: Up to 550 mins

If that is talk time for constant calls using the more advanced features will nom more bat a lot quicker.

By set up, you mean what?
My phone is pretty stock. Stock clock widget, mp3 widget and I've downloaded a few apps. Battery is crap no matter what, usb debugging on doesn't help either.

Done less than an hour of web browsing and phone been of change since 1AM GMT. Battery is now on 50%.
Waiting for to send this back and then get a replacement and see how that works out. If its still lags when typing something or battery is crap, I will sell it for a Samsung Galaxy S or Nokia N8.

Don't get the N8, Yeah it look's nice(ish) but Symbian is a joke - You will regret buying it, Even more so than the DHD, The words to explain how crap Symbian is don't even exist.

But it doesnt seem that bad. Played around with a demo version. I quite liked the Galaxy S white too so i may get that but they're both
