Root Desire Root Guide For Newbies

Hi all, may i know how i check if my phone is generi or not ? sorry to ask this qns but i'm a first timer using android phone. if i get the phone from a telco, but im able to use another telco sim card on the desire, does dat mean its unbranded?

So I followed the tutorial smoothly all the way.

As a result I can say, that there is no APP2SD icon whatsoever (how am I supposed to know it's working?) and icon "Superuser Permissions" brings a blank screen (where should I find benefits of being rooted?).
Or maybe my situation means something went wrong?

Thanks for the guide lekky, I'll give it a try real soon. Just have one question about the restore after rooting: will restoring also bring back scenes I've created or will those be wiped?

Cheers

The icon is there to show its rooted.
You wont have an apps2sd icon. It is a feature. You know its working as you dont use so much internal memory up when installing apps. From a refresh rooted phone you should have about 135mb internal memory

There won't be an apps2sd icon, just install a large app and see how much memory it took up in the settings. The superuser permissions app is an app that controls superuser access from apps requesting such access. Rooted apps are available in the market.

I'm not sure sorry, I don't use scenes myself (I just recreate it, 5 minute job :p )

Hi anyone? pls help me?

How do i root my phone without using a gold card?. Because im pretty certain my phone is with a generic rom?

EDIT:
My software version is: 1.15.405.4, does that mean its branded or not ?

Lecky

I just started my desire using the back key to see which bootloader I had, and was unable to get back to power up again. Now I have a red triangle over a picture of a battery/desire.

How do I get back to normal reality?

Joe

Ignore this. I realized all I had to do was remove the battery...

Hi,
Is there any way to restore to the stock davlik?
I am trying to restore to stock ROM from rooted with apps2sd but I get errors evry time, even through the restore methods used to flash the rooted ROM and I think its down to the davlik, may be I am wrong?
Any advice either way would be great.
Thanks

Never mind... I worked it out.
For those interested in unrooting ready for stock froyo and having some trouble using the stock update .exe files, all you need to do is take out your SD card, plug in your USB cable, power the phone on whilst using the down volume key, take it into fastboot and run the ROM file from windows.

follow this guide to the letter, it will work perfectly.

My next question...

i spazzed up my phone by removing apks for stocks and peep. Then i heard about the 1.21 update, so thought id give it a go. which didnt go quite so swimmingly! nobody said i had to use the goldcard!!!

had to go back to t-mobile 1.15.110.11, then to generic 1.15.405.3, then up to 1.21.405.2.
which all went ok once the goldcard was in!

I presume i'm no longer rooted now?
im pretty sure apps2sd is gone aswell?
this being the case, i now have a partitioned 4gb sd card with a partition that is now useless, how do i unpartition the sd card???

Just an educated guess but you could try using the push files method recovery-windows.bat like when you rooted it, and partition the sd card from the options in the recovery menus setting with values of 0 for the two Linux partitions that should then allow you to select the whole sd card for the fat 32

Am I understanding it correctly, that rooting automatically applies apps2sd? How about the cache, is that also moved to SD?
Edit: I got it. It was quite complex, but the guide is very, very good. Thanks.
By the way, I took the opportunity during repartitioning to set aside 256Mb for cache (it can't hurt, and 4Gb is more than plenty for me anyway).

What I'd really like to know is, what speed is the stock SD card and would I get a meaningful performance gain by replacing it with a Class 6 SD card?

Hope someone can help.
I've rooted and installed apps2sd, all working fine, cheers Lekky ;)
I have a small problem I think, when I install apps from the market they go to SD but when I install apps from PC they go to the phones memory is this correct or am I doing something wrong

go to menu>>settings>>about phone>>software information and post your software number from that we can tell you

I'd like to know if mine is branded too. I bought it from Orange Romania, locked in Orange.

I'm running the 0.75 bootloader, get the stock HTC boot animation, Baseband 32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11, Kernel 2.6.29-97da29ed htc-kernel@and18-2 #1, Build 1.15.405.4 CL155070 release-keys, Software number 1.15.405.4

Also, do I need to use a goldcard? And if I do, can I use the same card as my 'normal' card, and can I install App2SD? I'm asking because I read something about not being able to use it as a normal storage card if you format it to have an extra partition for App2SD, or something to that effect, with no further explanation.

Thanks in advance!

Turns out it wasn't branded. Managed to root it without a goldcard just fine :)

hi can anyone post a tutorial video on the whole process for r5-rooting (bootloader 0.8 ROM 2.1) PLEASE??!!
sure will be more helpful.really appreciate it :D since im new to this :\

cheers

Am I right in saying that I don't need to do the Gold Card step if my phone has the standard Desire Rom? Or will I need it in order to install Apps2SD?

Based on what I've read around, you need a second card for Apps2SD, as you can't use the A2SD card for normal storage after partitioning it. And you need a goldcard for bootloader 0.8+ and/or a software version above 1.5

I followed the r6 guide to rooting my Desire over ad Modaco as i have a 0.8 bootloader and 1.21.xxx and all is fine ... i say this because i got exactly the same screens as the walkthrough and have an app called Superuser Permissions now. Lovely.

But my question is this: i'm not sure if i have Apps2SD which is what i really wanted. Should i restart everything and follow your guide Lekky (is it suitable for 0.8 bootloader and 1.21.xxx)? Or can i tell somehow where apps are installing?

EDIT: I've figured this out using the ADB Shell and i've got A2SD+ working .... sweeet!

I have rotted my Desire when i got it, like 2 months ago . . .

Everything has been working fine, but today i got a message there was a system update, i did it, everything seemed to go fine, but now, my Wi-Fi isnt working at all . . .

If i go to settings, it says there under the Wi-Fi options "Unable to start Wi-Fi" . . .

What happened ? (i checked the bootloader version and i still have 0.75 . . . )

edit,

sry, found other threads bout it, trying the solutions, thanks and sorry !
