Droid X 2.3 update

i'm not pissed at all and i'm perfectly fine with staying on .595 if they never even release an official GB build. Also there have been numerous threads of this nature already started.
+1
Even when it does come out, I'm not upgrading until I know that it can be rooted. And I'm in no rush because I know the final will be marginally better than the .595 that I currently have.

I'm not pissed either and I'm still on rooted Froyo 2.2.1. I figure GB comes out when it comes out, and I'll still wait until its been verified that root works well and I won't lose any of the functionality I currently have.

I'm happy with my DX as it is. If/when GB comes out its gravy as far as I'm concerned. Personally I'm grateful I no longer have to deal with my previous Palm "smart" phone and all the lock-ups and other issues I had with it

Count your blessings...

its coming...its been approved...but there was no way we were going to get it before the X2...all the rumors were under the assumption that the X2 was going to LAUNCH with 2.3 and that we didn't know when the X2 was coming...when we found out officially that the X2 was coming soon (yesterday) and only shipping with 2.2...i think anyone that really thought about that for a second would have adjusted their expectations that the X would be getting the update that soon...

The thing is, when news about an official OTA comes out, it's going to hit the front page and will undoubtedly be stickied, and as there's no actual news available (and probably won't be until the OTA actually hits), that kind of renders this thread useless.

(I tried really hard not to tell you to try out one of the new leaks ;) )

Thanks for trying, and the newest isn't bad, smooth!

If it aint on the X2, it won't be out for the X before that.

How stupid would verizon look if they released the upgraded version DroidX2 yesterday with 2.2 and the old out of date DroidX was getting the 2.3 upgrade

The original Droid got Froyo before the DX. Per the above statements that means it wouldn't have happened, no way it happened and Verizon looked stupid when it did happen, respectively. I think the timing of Froyo between the Droid and DX nullifies those arguments.

I want Gingerbread for the performance upgrade and general bug fixes. I also want the legit version without having to upgrade / downgrade / wipe my phone. While I have no fear of tweaking my phone, I just don't feel like jumping through any hoops right now to make it work as well as it can. Minor tweaking is fun, restoring my phone because I had to wipe it to get the leak working properly isn't. At least not for me.

This is a little bit of apples to oranges, the original driod was stock so there was very little programming that was needed to the base code to get it ready for an OTA. We had/have Blur, locked bootloader and all of that. There was more work to create an OTA for the X. Also the update for the original driod did not come out under a few months after the launch of the Incredible and the X. I am not going to say that the X won't get it before or at the same time as the X2, but from a sales stand point verizon may not want to sell a new phone that is not a huge upgrade of the former one with an older operating system than the old one.

Us cutting edge folks just can't help ourselves. If you're not the adventurous type, then I'm sure it is quite frustrating to wait right now. If any of us could help you out, we'd call VZW and tell them to go ahead and release the upgrade for the X.

negative...

the reasoning for that is the OG Droid runs Vanilla Android...meaning that as soon as Google releases the source code...it works on the OG....the DX runs MotoBlur ontop of Android...it takes time for the developers to modify and test out all of their changes before pushing out the updates....

the X and X2 are going to essentially be getting the same versions of GingerBlur...and there is just no way Moto/VZW sends it out for the X before X2...

there will be no need to downgrade back to Froyo to get the official GB...i would say within 12 hours of the release of the OTA there will be a flashable .zip file to upgrade those of us running the leaked GB files to official GB...and i would say within 48 hours there will be a rooted version for us to flash...most likely without ever going back to Froyo...

and even if we do...its a 15 minute process...

I don't feel like multiple quotes again, you guys will figure it out. :)

I hadn't thought of the difference between D and DX's versions of Android. However, IF Verizon has approved GB for DX, then the same issue stands; the complexity of making the changes is in the past, they would be sitting on it for internal reasons. Could it be because of not wanting to interfere with the DX2 or some other inconceivable reason, not unlike those which drive Verizon to do odd things to us. I could see them wanting to stagger new things to give tech support a chance to breathe. It still sucks for those of us who just want the benefits without the pain.

While I'm certain the procedure of reflashing is only 15 minutes long, the tweaking to get back to where I was before lasts for days. I recently wiped my phone so I'm familiar with that pain.

And I'm not looking down on anyone who gets into that. I'm a programmer and I understand the joy of digging in to a piece of technology to see what it can do and bending it to your will. I just want simple at the moment. To quote Al Pacino from Oceans 13, "I don't want the labor pains, I just want the baby."

the tech support thing would be made easier by holding back the X release...because since essentially the version of Android will be identical releasing them at the same time would only help things...

tweaking what really?...any app data (which includes settings) can be backed up and restored using titanium backup...so you won't have to change ANY of those settings...

So after that you're looking at general OS settings...and frankly i think anyone that has setup their phone before could get through every single menu and change every single setting on the phone in less than an hour...

to me i don't see how that can be pain...but everyone is different i guess...

for device settings if your already on a GB build prior to reloading GB can't you do a backup in Clockwork and then do a restore /advance restore /data only? to get your settings back to how they were?

if you're already on GB then yes you can...

personally i never do...i never restore data with my apps either...i always try to start as "fresh" as possible when installing something new..

yeah i've read one of your sermons before on making backups but not using them lol.

I did the advance restore when i went from .573 to .595 and it worked great. I didn't have to redo anything.

Last time I used Titanium to restore my phone I ended up with that annoying sync icon in the notification area which never went away. Research I did at the time said it was a Titanium bug but I never got rid of it until I recently wiped and started over. Maybe I did something wrong initially.

sounds like you may have restored "system data". When doing a restore in Titanium just do the App and App data restore.

yeah...titanium shouldn't have done that...restoring apps from titanium should actually bypass the need for syncing...

Where in the world is 2.3?......

I know there's been 4 leaks by now and at one point was running one of them. I'm back to rooted froyo and as pissed as everybody else not on one of these leaks. Not to mention every thread regarding gingerbread always merges into a thread telling everyone to install a leak.

I think its about time to establish a thread of this like. That's right this is for all of us disgruntled froyo users who don't care to venture back down the road that leads to a leaked gingerbread install. Please don't mention or suggest installing a leak to anyone on here, this is to come to for actual news regarding the official ota update, venting or theories of why there's no communication regarding an official release date.

Love what this has turned into! To all you disgruntled (or not) people don't sweat the petty things. Froyo to Gingerbread is a great thing but even if it never came to the X I'm still happy with Froyo.

That being said has anyone confirmed when Gingerbread will come out for the X? :D

A personal opinion:

A number of Droid X users have reported issues with random reboots. It is my opinion that Motorola and Verizon have intentionally leaked Gingerbread releases with the expectation that user's affected by various issues on their phones will download and install the leaks.

Moto and Big Red can then monitor forum chatter and see if the release candidates are addressing these issues.

Basically, they are using the community to beta test the release candidates in a way that ensures that they aren't liable for having to support the various release candidates. The moment a new build gets "leaked" they have hundreds of eager volunteers installing the software and providing comments on how well the software is working.

Once they have a pretty good feeling that they've addressed whatever issues are causing some Droid X users so much grief, that's when the OTA will get pushed out.

I thought i read something about not being able to do this because of a new kernel?..or am i confusing that with not being able to sbf back from the .596 because of a new bootloader? i'm all messed up, sorry haha.
