Eris to v2.x, when?

There may not be a legal position, bit Verizon has lost a lot of goodwill opportunity. In 10 years with VZ we have generally experienced.excellent support via phone, and usually with store techies. But the business guys have really blown this opportunity by.allowing misinformation to explode from the stores and on forums.
Having been with VZW for many years, I think you have some validity to what you say. I stopped in one of the local VZW corporate stores here today and asked about the new Incredible (which I'm thinking about getting even though I love my Eris). The rep was clueless about the phone. I said "It's on VZW's website with specs and everything but I was just curious when you might have one to look at." Again, he just looked at me and said "They don't tell us about the new stuff so I just don't know anything about it. I've never even heard of it." Now, this is two days before we can pre-order the darn thing and this amateur, besides being rude and ignorant of his own product, left me stunned. I've gotten more knowledge on this forum in the last few months than people that work for VZW know about what they sell. I have gotten a few techs (on the phone and in the stores) every now and then that are phenomenal with their help but, sad to say, it seems the majority of store employees act like they are selling hamburgers.

...sad to say, it seems the majority of store employees act like they are selling hamburgers.

There are two corporate Verizon outlets in my town, and three franchise setups, not counting the Best Buy phone area.

The most info, on a regular basis, which I've been able to gather over time has come from the Best Buy managers. They have a handle on what was ordered, what is being shipped and what the phones are about based on which is competing against which, etc.

As far as updates, they seem to be pretty much in the dark about it. The sole exception to that in a Best Buy store was the Verizon rep who happened to be there a few weeks ago who spoke with me at length about the Eris update, what is in it, how big it is, and when it should arrive via OTA in our devices.

I posted highlights of my conversation with him, in this thread, that same day; based on his words, it appears the update is forthcoming this month, "unless Verizon techs spot something ugly about it," he mentioned, "and that's happened already in February."

He even stated that 2.1 was completed near the end of March, the 29th to be exact.

I still get a kick out of these forums.

Some random thoughts:
1) Most people that bought an Eris don't give a crap about about 2.1 or even know about it. That is unless they hang out at a few different forum sites.
2) The Eris on 1.5 is a great phone
3) It will get 2.1 OTA
4) When the Incredible is released there will be another better/faster/more powerful phone coming after it.
5) People that think they can sue VSW and/or HTC need to go drinking together and plan their strategy.
6) Sales reps are going to tell you anything to do their job, make a sale.
7) Kittens are just about extinct
8) OTD's avatar is hot!

Sorry, but my experiance is the opposite. I frequent 2 corporate stores and get very good service. They are always well staffed and the people are knowledgable. They have fixed every issue I have. You can return stuff with no questions asked for up to 30 days. They even encouraged me to try something and if it didn't work out bring it back or exchange it. I did, and they were great about it. But, I'm not expecting a retail establishment to give me detailed insights into corporate R&D or Product Management either. But for what they are supposed to do, they are one of the better service providers I deal with.

I was at the Sisters Rodeo grounds today for a work party. While digging a post hole I reached in to pull out a rock and it told me that the 2.1 OTA may be coming soon. Or maybe not. There is a Verizon tower on the Rodeo grounds.

P.S. The rock asked me to save the kittens.

So I take my wifes Devour into Verizon cuz its acting buggy with goggle. And as I'm standing there at the tech support counter I ask the tech guy if hes heard anything about 2.1 for the Eris. Real casual like he asks me if I would like the update as he has it right there on his computer. Sounds too good to be true right. But it is cuz he pops out his Eris and shows me his running on 2.1. He takes my phone and puts a sticky note on it with my name and # and tells me to come back in about 30mins and it'll be ready:eek: then he's like "dont tell anyone i did this for you though cuz its only for the employees". So i boogey on out of there and come back in 30 for my newly updated 2.1 ERIS. And this is when the story takes a horrible twist, I go back to the nice tech man and now he tells me " I dont know what happened they took the 2.1 version off our computer it was just there yesterday BLAH BLAH BLAH LIE LIE LIE'' ( end quote ) Yet another Verizon employee lies to be and gets away with it. BTW I joined this forum to tell this story thats how incredibly pissed off i am at Verizon today. Bad enough waiting 3 months for an update but then they jerk the football out from under me like I'm freaking Charlie Brown. ARRGH!!

I am that sales rep you speak of. Bet you didn't know we frequented these forums.
For reals, though, we did lost the update. People asked for it too much and our cover was blown. We now operate from a den near the great Lake Titicaca.

MY phone, after sleeping for about an hour, just reset itself for the first time I can remember, and I thought, ''2.1?'' Until then, I thought I didn't care. GUess I do. I think I remember having to approve the YouTube killer update, and I see nothing here about it, so, guess it was just a ghost.

I'm using 2.1 leak one. So it wouldn't be easy for me to tell if it had updated.

Just for balance I thought it was interesting that Sprint needed to move schedules around because of the issues upgrading their Hero "Eris" to 2.1.

As reported by Android Guys, Engadget & Android and Me. The funny thing is the the claim is based on the recorded transcript from a Sprint CSR. So I guess all carriers CSRs tell clients stories, not just Verizon.

Well We'll See!

Well maybe I was a bit harsh but since I have been in sales for some 20 years (now retired) I must be considered "old school". My point was that, at the very least, a good salesperson would keep up with their products, know what they've got and what's coming up. I appreciate that old saying that "80% of sales generally come from 20% of your salespeople". I have come across a few VZW people that, after hearing what I've learned (especially on here about the Incredible) have thanked me for the info and began to do some research on their own. I know this because when I see them again, they recognize me and chat about what they've learned too. In the end, everyone wins. But, I agree with your comment that, in general, VZW is the biggest and the best in the business.

Lots of people will have differing answers on this topic ... but personally, I've found the levels of both service and knowledge at VZW stores to be extremely poor. The big chain stores are little better. Both places seem to have little incentive to provide quality, informed service.

In my experience, the most knowledgeable salespeople are often found at small, franchise stores. Places like that know they need to provide quality sales service in order to survive, since they're usually not able to offer deals quite as good as other places. A good one can be a fine place to go to look at phones and talk to people ... before going back home and actually ordering your chosen phone off the web. :D

Are we still on about doing our research at home and not trusting salespeople?

I did a ton of research alongside using my gadget-geek friends for help and each and every single one of them told me to go for the Droid. I chose the Eris for the price and design, and I think I def. got what I paid for.

It's fast for some, but not for me, and I think my buds knew that. While I would quickly say I was stubborn and refused to listen, I honestly thought that the Eris would suffice. I was ignorant to the difference the processor and other hardware specs make, and only now is it obvious. The Droid's numbers are not that much better, but it is a world of a difference in speed as well as capabilities. It can be clocked to be faster than an N1 (and still only run 'lukewarm" in temperature."

So doing all the research in the world will not help you if you don't know what you truly want. For casual users, every Android phone is fine. But for those that really like doing a lot with their phones, the top-tier Google phones are probably the best.

One last thing. Are people jumping to the Incredible because they are angry 2.1 did not come out for the Eris, as of yet? You realize no non-Google phone has gotten 2.1 yet, right? It's all the N1 and Droid right now. What will happen when 2.1+ comes out? The N1 and the Droid WILL get it before the Incredible because of Sense on the Incredible. The Incredible is the successor to the Eris/Hero. It will suffer from the same issues in terms of updates. So when 2.1+ comes around and it takes forever for the Incredible to get it, will you jump ship again?

I finally went back to the VZW store in my area, Atlanta, GA. (names and places have been changed to protect the innocent) Billy came right up to me and said, "Hey look BJ, I upgraded to 2.1 just like you told me to do." and showed me his 2.1 setup. He was so happy to have it but he was busy. We chatted for a sec or two and I split. On the way out I asked if he knew when the official 2.1 was coming. He said that he didn't but my impression was that he now didn't care. He had 2.1 and that was all that mattered.

This forum tends to waffle from positive that 2.1 is coming to depressed and angry that it will never be here.

I think I have seen enough responses on here about having put the 'official' update on the phone and something doesn't work. If those were the official releases and if someone found problems, then holding up the release may be wise.

If it is close, and even if they did pull the project some programmer is probably still fidgeting with it in their "spare" time and will figure it out. Programmers are kind of like that.

Will Verizon release it then, maybe. They may have lost interest and may not want to or be thrilled to get their Eris customers happy again. In any case will it leak out - the magic 8 ball says 'all signs point to yes'.

And in any case, I still believe I have the coolest phone for me - although I very rarely use it just as a phone. =)

Why is it so hard for a corporation like Verizon to simply put together a memo to it's employees informing them where the update is in development? That way all the stores would be giving out the same information to customers.

I did all that. Looks like I created a black hole in the middle of Lake Titicaca. This is right next to where the place where you can get 2.1 is.

Probably because as hard as it is for most people here to understand it is a very, very, very small percentage of people who own an Eris that wants to know when 2.1 is going to be sent OTA. And an even smaller percentage that ask VZW employees.

Pretty sure you haven't popped your AndroidForums cherry if you haven't copy and pasted a conversation you had with a VZW employee.

But it is true, most owners don't know about it. It seems the backlash over a phone's bugs happens only on phones that are popular amongst gadget-geeks, which also happen to be the most expensive phones as well (the Nexus One, and a few months earlier, the Droid). Eris users really aren't the kind to demand bugs be fixed because they are mostly everyday users of simple tasks like voice, text, the occasional picture, and some internet browsing/app use.

I'm assuming on the last part, but it seems to be true. They aren't much different than dumbphone users, only they can do more with their touchscreen. Even then, most dumbphones are getting touch screens so the gap between the entry-level Eris and a high-end dumbphone is narrowing.

N1 and Droid users get their problems fixed because 1. they can identify problems that come up beyond "average use" and 2. they paid the premium for a new phone, so of course Google and the carrier will honor their requests first.

I think that they will release it after the Incredible comes out but they have till the end of the month. after that no more Eris. Just Incredible and Droid. Then it will be Incredible and Saygus. And maybe a iPhone Hd or some crap like that but the droid is next in line to be replaced sorry stuck up droid users that's right your phone will soon be obsolete. lol

Its garbage like this that irritates me. I would like to know where these"helpful"verizon stores are.cause the ppl I have spoken to might know more about flipping hamburgers than they do about whats going on with the company they work for.It is laughable that nobody knows anything about the release date for the ota.its already been leaked, now fix the bugs and release it already.why is so hard, and why all the secrecy? This is not national security we are dealing with, it is an update to a phone seems to me like when you ask about the official update for the eris, you might as well be asking for directions to area 51
