Frankenstorm

Spending the day battening down the hatches. I live on the south shore of LI, so it's not looking so good. We came through last years hurricane Irene unscathed, but the water from the storm surge reached a block from my house. We didn't flood or loose power, but we did flood during the rain storm on 8/14/11 when we got ~9" of rain in a couple of hours. At least this time, there's no talk of mandatory evacuations like last time. We were evacuated last time, but decided to stay. The people we were going to stay with if we did leave lost power for more than a week and had their basement flood.

So far, I've put away the Halloween decorations :( and stored anything in the yard that could become a projectile. In the basement, anything that can't get wet is several inches off the floor. I have our pump and 2 shop vacs at the ready. If we flood this time, I'm going to have to bite the bullet and have a french drain and sump installed (~$7k). My neighbor had one put in after last summer, so this will be the test. The only reason I wavered on doing it ourselves is that another neighbor had a similar system put in 15 years ago. We had a flood event ~8 years ago (8 days of steady rain coupled with full moon and high tide) that saw water in my basement for the first time ever (house is almost 50 yrs old). The worst flooding by far was in the house with the sump. The water rose in the sump so fast that it shorted out the pump and literally filled the basement. The fire dept had to pump it out because the water reached the service panel. We OTH lost the carpet in the family room and a whole lot of junk that shouldn't have been on the floor.

The freezer and fridge are full of water bottles. The flashlights are in easy reach. Now all I can do is cross fingers and kick myself repeatedly for not buying the generator I said I was going to buy after the last hurricane. :shot: :banghead:

I plan on drinking heavily tonight!!!!

If you've got a high water table, putting a sump in your basement is like drilling a hole in a sinking boat to let the water out, IMO. In our old house, we got flooded three times. The worst and last time was hurricane Floyd in '99. The first time we got flooded was just from a long line of soaking storms that dropped 5" or 6" of rain in 24 hours. We got about 4" of water in the basement while the neighbors with a sump got 4 feet. I went out and bought a submersible sump pump and rigged it up with a 1-1/2" flexible hose. I put the pump at the lowest part of the floor and ran the hose out the basement window onto one of those concrete downspout splash pans to direct the water away from the foundation. It did require a lot of babysitting and was dependent on having power, but kept the water level low enough to save anything not on the floor as well as all the appliances.

I've got a fishing lantern, a transistor radio, 1.5 liter bottle of Polish potato Vodka, Noilly Prat Vermouth, and a fresh jar of olives. I'm set.

I am in Tokyo, and we have had several typhoon reportedly heading our way in the last month, but none really had any effect.
So I am also a supporter of the weather conspiracy theory!!

We've had several instances of "Storm of the Century" or "Monster Storm" reports putting the fear of god into everyone only to turn out to be minimal or nothing. Unfortunately every now and then they get one right and that's the report everyone decides to ignore.

Sandy is leaving us after 2 days. I live on the Southern end of the NC coast on a barrier island. We got the outer bands on Friday, the worst of it was yesterday afternoon. Not real damage, just wind, rain and some beach erosion.
She will be gone from here later today.
Y'all can have fun with her now!

Can't you invite her to stay a while longer? I've heard a lot about "southern hospitality" ;)

Prepare for the worst, hope for the best!

On the plus side, Sandy should make for a easier leaf cleanup this fall. The oak in our yard has already dropped ~50% and the majority of whats left will probably come down in the next 2 days. I just came in from mulching what was on the lawn with my mower. This season, I'm aiming at keeping 100% on my property. I've always composted but the trees in my yard drop a tremendous amount of leaves, ~50-75 lawn and leaf bags full after 10 to 1 mulching with a blower vac. I always end up leaving 15-20 bags on the curb for lack of room. This season, I'm mulching all with the mower and leaving it in on the lawn and in the beds. We'll see how that works out!

I am stocked up on the essentials. Beer, wine, cheese, tp, water, and other unimportant stuff like food.

Be stafe and fuff.......... ;)

We're just getting started and there are already reports of flooding 5 blocks from me. It's ON! So far, no water or power issues. Crossing fingers furiously!

To all my friends on the east coast, be safe. I've never been in a full force hurricane but I have lived through many tornadoes. And Mother Nature does not joke around. Be SAFE!!

We will be alright... we get hurricanes every year. Unlike tornados its just really powerful winds, lots of rain, some power outages, and trees falling on houses or cars. So getting hit by a tree is the only that I've found in hurricanes. Minus stupid people trying to drive or be out boating

Been looking at some of the flooding that Hurricane Sandy has created. I've never been through a hurricane because I live in the West Coast(California) and I can personally say that I rather go through an Earth Quake then a tropical store. Anyhow, I just wanted to say to all my phandroid members going through the storm to be safe and I hope that you and your familes get over Sandy with the least amount of damage to your properties as much as possible. Your thoughts and prayers are with me!

I prefer hurricanes, hurricanes come with a prediction, earthquakes come out of nowhere.
