Galaxy Nexus Battery Life

Well I got my first bad battery life last night.

I received my extended battery yesterday, charged it up to full last night with phone off. Turned on phone and left sitting overnight for 8 hours as I slept, I checked battery level before placing my Nexus down and it read 100%.

When I work up this morning I checked, 71% I was shocked.

I can see that it has something to do with the OS like everyone else, 41%.

This morning I charged back to 100% and left the house. Received one text message and sent one text, battery dropped to 91%, OS still running high.

PLEASE NOTE!

Just got a PM from keatre over at XDA -- quoting below.

The user needs to clear their battery stats before they start the test. Either clear it in bootloader or charge to full, then unplug.

People are starting at 78%, and AndroidOS is factoring in their other runtimes.

At this point, it's safe to assume that WiFi is putting a stopgate out on whatever is causing the issue. It's crazy at work right now, so I'll check out the AF in a bit.

Please try and let the guys over there know that they need to reset their battery stats - thats their issue. WiFi is fixing the AndroidOS 'bug' though. I have a custom kernel currently running a pre-alpha build to test other parameters.

If WiFi is fixing the issue why is my Android OS still the highest or second highest battery usage in my stats? My WiFi has been on almost as long as I have owned the phone unless I leave the house. Being Ive been off work since Thursday evening Ive spent 90% of my time with the phone at home.

My stock battery is getting better every day it seems...Day 4 and I am up to about 5hrs + usage while on WIFI, without WIFI i am about 3hrs + plus on 4g. If i can get 4hrs usage while on 4g I will be very happy.

One thing about worse batteyr life, it makes you spend less time on your phone which 99% of need anyway :D

As far as I understand it, Android OS is usually going to be high because that is how Google (Android) lumps all of the core processes together into one stat under the Battery Usage.

The thing we are trying to fix is lowering that percentage a bit as well as lowering the Keep Awake time that is found under Android OS, which is usually a lot higher than Screen On time, which will cause lower battery numbers.

Keatre can always come and in correct me if I am giving some incorrect information though.

I just checked that and mine is exactly double the screen on time. Still getting very good battery life though.

Ive been using Juice Defender and it seemed to almost double my battery life. But I've been dealing with other annoyances like unlocking the phone and it taking 2-3 min before it reconnects to 3G/4G.

Is anyone else using this?

I also saw slow reconnects to data services using Juice Defender.

I stopped using it though since I was trying to have GChat conversations at work and it would send them to my desktop cause I had no data on my phone.

I went to Verizon on my lunch break to talk to them about my battery issues and explained how I read on message boards that other users are getting 15+ hours on their battery and I am getting 4-6 with minimal usage (battery section shows about 1 hour of screen time before it dies). They pretty much told me not to believe everything I read online and dismissed my claim as illegitimate. They said they sold 75 phones on day 1 and only 1 person returned but it wasn't for a battery issue. I told her statistically, your 75 phones (in midtown Manhattan) is relatively small in comparison to the entire user population.

And she said that a new software update (which is TBD) could fix this. But that if i want to get a new phone or a replacement, there would be a $35 restocking fee which I find to be ridiculous. She said unless the phone is broken they charge that fee. Not if I just perceive it to be broken and want to try a replacement to which she said will also have the same problems.

She just wouldn't believe me that many of you experience great battery life! So I don't know what to do!

If I dont really use my phone much, which I havent today because of being busy, my battery will last a while. But my keep awake time is way over my screen time. It is sitting at 2h52min and screen is only 39min. If I was actually using my phone it would plummet. I think I played Bejeweled 2 for 3-4min and it dropped 4%. Doesnt sound like a lot til you look at the fact it wasnt on very long. Overnight I lost 13-14% with it just sitting on my headboard.

Does Live Wallpaper drain the battery a ton? It seems like more than anything that using wi-fi when you can instead of the cell network is the best way to save battery. Is that right?

I returned my first nexus for the same reason, starting reading on here aftewards about everyone else's good battery life sominsaid screw it and went and bought another one. It has been 10x better with the new phone.

Go as for a replacement phone

When did you get your replacement? I just got mine about 2 hours ago.

I know it's still to early to tell about the battery difference, but I it's better,

:) After light use, some email checking a few txt's here and there and some phone calls and a little browsing along with 1 short nav session. Average use for me, I have an iPad for browsing at home and pc at work.

Keep in mind the notifications do drain so in Light Flow I disabled the LED for email. Before that a charge wouldn't last through the night.

Thanks! Did they charge you the $35 restocking fee?

WOW!!! What are your settings for your screen to only be 10%?

Impressive, but I notice your screen only amounts for a small amount, 10%. It would cause me to believe you hardly used your phone which would explain the awesome battery life. What was the screen on time and brightness setting?

I don't know what people are expecting from the battery life on this thing but i been able to get 4-6 hours if I use like a laptop and with live wall paper. I have gotten it to last about 11 hours with normal light usage.

I wonder if the people having the problems are doing the bare basics to keep there battery life up. Here are the things I have been doing.

1. Turned 4G off cause I am not in the area.

2. Turn GPS off till I am using it (I heard that the phone only uses it when you turn on navigation)

3. Turn off the WiFi

4. Dark wall paper.

I have also heard turning off the NFC will help. As well as not using a ton of widgets. I also been forgetting to going to the task manager screen and turning off the apps that are running if I start remembering to do that I am sure I can get an extra 15-20 minutes out of this thing.

But I am totally happy with the battery life on this thing. I am thinking about waiting to see if they make a bigger battery for this device but if not this is still doing a far better job then my Droid 2 did after updating it to Gingerbread.

Mines gobbling down the battery from the issue with Exchange not working on some phones.

It appears it's constantly fetching the mail, but the stock Exchange program was gobbling down like 50-60% of the juice.

I am running Touchdown as an alternative, and I have asked them if I can just dump the Exchange account off my phone and use Touchdown for a while exclusively, no reply yet from Nitro.

I unchecked the sync under the exchange accounts, and that's brought Exchange back down to below my screen use - currently set to automatic.

I'm at 33% screen, 18% exchange, 3 hours 1 minute, with 88% remaining.

Yesterday, phone only lasted 2 hours, then died, then on re-charge, and boot, it defaults to Silent mode, so you don't know the damn phone is ringing, without looking at it seeing a call is coming in.
