Galaxy Nexus Battery Life

So, can we pretty much put the 'bad battery life' thing to rest? Everyone who has the phone for a week and let the battery settle in reports they are getting way better battery life now.

Nope, I am on my 2nd Nexus that I got last Friday and while at first the 2nd one appeared to get better battery life, at most it still only hit 9 hours. And now it is back down to 4-5 like my original that I got at launch. So I really don't know what to do anymore!

Yup, I think one guy between us exchanged and gave us 1 day stats.

3 full charges, then report. MINIMUM. Also give us your screen on time. Screen is the biggest power hungry animal, duh.

I'll try to help.

  1. How long is your screen on for these 4-5 hours (post the exact time listed in the Screen section in the battery usage area)?

  2. What brightness level are you set to?

  3. What accounts do you have syncing?

  4. What apps are you using for texting besides that stock SMS and Gtalk apps?

  5. Are you using 4G all the time?

I've disabled numerous apps and turned off 4g... Battery is improving, but not that great. See:

Not too bad - lots of awake time when the screen is off. I notice this when I get a lot of emails, messages, notifications, etc. while the screen is off.

How are you guys getting such good battery life? I'm only getting about 8 hours without LTE. What ROM? Rooted?

Just got the extended batt last night. did a full charge while turned off. Captured some screenshots with the standard batt last week on a day of normal usage. Going to do the same today and tomorrow and then compare. My battery experience with this phone has been mostly positive (after the first few days) so hopefully the extended batt will only help. The rest of the phone is awesome.

I'm in the exact boat at you. I unlocked the bootloader, but that's it.

I'm running a custom rom/kernel. That may be my problem. Axi0m + Custom Kernel.

Mine dies within 8 hours. Awful battery. Not sure if its a rom/kernel issue though.

Superdorf's 379 post poses a good question about what is "normal". Yes, everybody uses the phone differently but his phone seems to be chewing through something to make Android gobble half the battery.

Unless your on the phone, the market, pandora, shouldn't the screen always be the top battery hog?

The problem here is that we, to my understanding, do not know what processes make up the "Android OS" bucket. If that were explained, we might not be scratching our heads as much about it's usage being so large on some users' phones.

Yeah... My feeling is that with only 1 hour of on screen time I should be able to go longer than 14hrs.

  1. How long is your screen on for these 4-5 hours (post the exact time listed in the Screen section in the battery usage area)? Today my phone died at 5 hr 54 mins. The screen was on for 1 h 33 mm.

  2. What brightness level are you set to? auto brightness

  3. What accounts do you have syncing? Gmail and friendcaster (i use friendcaster so my contacts have pictures)

  4. What apps are you using for texting besides that stock SMS and Gtalk apps? KIK, but i am not on it all day. Nor do I text all day.

  5. Are you using 4G all the time? I have had it on 3G since last Friday when I got my replacement device. Never turned on 4G, yet I do live in a 4g area (NYC metro area)

[*] Did you install any sort of aftermarket task killer/manager?
[*] Did you install any sort of aftermarket battery management/reporting apps?

Those should, and almost have been the first questions when it comes to Android and battery life. A lot of people will kill a process, but if that process is not there, I can cause other system process to start freaking out. Same with some battery tools.

I will agree that screen on-time appears to be the largest consumption. There is dev work that I've been following on the GSM side, where there is a lot of success in undervolting and stability... as well as looking at notes in changelogs, some indicating why things like GPU was underclocked. I'm not ready to play until 4.0.3 becomes officially official though.

Hi there. Nope I did not install any task killers or battery apps either. I don't know what would be safe or not to stop running anyway.

Plus i am at work so all I used my phone for today was to play a few words with friends moves, 2 foursquare checkins, respond to a few KIK messages and checked facebook on the bus this morning for maybe 3 minutes.

Did you change the words with friends settings. By default that stupid program checks for updates every 5 min. I knew someone who had a Droid X and was getting crappy battery, among other things I told them to check WWF... better battery life for them after the fixes.

Most people don't realize WWF has such a short poll time, especially people coming from iPhone b/c there is no poll time setting on the iPhone... I can only assume it's push for those folks.

Hmmm, I wonder if that is the cause. I did just switch it to 1 hour based on your recommendation. But then I have no clue if it is my turn! LOL!

Do you think Light Flow could be causing it at all? I installed that app based on people on this forum suggesting it as a fix for the lack of notifications.

I would remove KIK and friendcaster for at least a day or two and see how things look. You'll likely use the phone a little less without KIK, yes, but you will then know if these apps are sucking juice even when you aren't actively interacting with them. Communication apps can sometimes do a lot in the background with the network even when you aren't typing in them... Everything eslse seems reasonable for decent battery life.

Yes, WWF checking in the background for whether or not it's your turn is going to put some kind of hurt on the battery... On Lightflow, I no longer think it uses the battery much. I thought it did at first, but I believe that not to be the case.

I don't use lightflow currently but have been considering it based upon all the suggestions as well. I might add it now and see if the batt usage I'm used to over the past few days changes.

I wouldn't use friendcaster at all if facebook would sync to my contacts. What if I switch the refresh type from "periodic check" to "push c2dm (recommended)"?
Apparantly the Push c2dm option just became available in August and it says there is "no polling happening on the device".

As for Kik....eeek, not sure i can get rid of that. I rely on that to communicate with certain friends who don't have Verizon and eat up my texts. HAHA.

Thanks, I switched WWF to 1 hour. Hopefully that makes a difference.

Hi Guys this is my first time posting. I've read thru most of the previous comments but still had question. I'm attaching by battery graph, and in the middle there is a long period of screen off (bc I was sleeping), but theres a ton of Awake activity. What the hell is that? over a 6 hr period when I slept, the battery decreased 5%. Is this supposed to happen, and is it happening with you guys?

I had google sync with gmail and calendar on
and also the google location services first checkbox on
wifi keep alive during sleep.
standard battery
auto brightness
facebook and G+ updates and background sync all off.
unlocked at&t version of GN

I'm going to test it tommrow night by turning off the google sync to see if it keeps awake when the screen is off.

I checked betterbatterystats wakelocks and its all pointing to google server syncs and gtalk stuff.
I apologize if this was covered in the past pages.....

Any ideas? Thanks!!!!!

No way. My phone hasn't gotten any better after 10 days. No battery hogging apps, configured properly, and etc.

If you do the math, if you remove the os battery drain, and he'd have 54% battery, instead of 17%.

There is major undervolting work in the dev forums, with lots of success already. Let's see what comes via an OTA, and if they incorporate any of those types of features for battery conservation. If so, it will benefit everyone.
