Root Gingerbread Root Exploit!!!

I got the readme file for it. It does appear to be a rooting exploit for GB. Allthought the readme is kinda hard to follow. The person that wrote it either doesn't speak English or at the very least, doesn't type it.

The readme makes mention of an apk file which droid uses but your guess is as good as mine what phones it works on or will work on.

Seems kinda messy. It warns to remove the sdcard because it exploits the volume manager through an adb connection, and it might erase the sdcard. I'll wait for someone smarter than me to sort this out. Shouldn't take too long. I've been told I aint the sharpest tool in the shed. :D
My favorite line from the readme file - "The Jailbreaker cannot always live in Maryland and give sweet candy to everyone!"
Wha?

He's gotta be talking about D.C. (Maryland) and Obama giving away too much of the taxpayers money with unneeded social welfare (candy). Sounds like a great republican in the making.

Lol, if that's what he means, it went WHOOSH right over my head. I must be tired. :o

Worked for me, I ran the apk from here: [21.04.2011][v1.0] GingerBreak (root for GingerBread) - xda-developers

installed then using the sdk I ran these 2 cmds:
adb shell rmdir /data/local/tmp
adb shell mkdir /data/local/tmp

went back to phone and ran gingerbreak then clicked on root.

I noticed the sdcard warning and swapped out my sdcard with old 8g from eris - didn't cause any issues and I didn't lose anything from phone or sdcard.

You are brave soul. So, did you run this on the leaked ota GB?

Eit: nevermind, I read the thread you posted and it has the info. Thanks.

Good news! Looks like this will be boxed up into a one click method before long. Even with an updated bootloader and kernel, this should work with the OTA that comes out in a few weeks. We'll see!

This morning I received this tweet from P3Droid:

"OK, the exploit by @Stealth rooted my droid x running stock gb...I knew we would get root again :)...hellz yeah and happy Friday

What this basically means is that the method of SBF'ing back to stock 2.3.340 and flashing the 3 files should be outdated. We now have a one-click .apk file to root our phones.

So will this work for the official OTA coming out in a few weeks? I don't know. Experts can weigh in.

The smart thing to do would be to play it safe and hold the exploit until the OTA is released so they can't patch it before then.

this is pretty great news! almost makes me want to SBF, load the latest leaked OTA (preroot) then root it... just cause I can lol
If I wasnt so busy today I probably would... we shall see

It won't be held because it's for multiple phones, not just the X.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Moto ignore it anyway. If the suggested release dates are right, the rollout is way too close to submit another build for testing and pushing back a big release for something that will inevitably happen anyway is silly.

They already have the bootloader and the kernel locked down. They have the tools to monitor tethering. They don't care about the rooters, we are not their problem.

Very well said. Agree 100%!

Me thinks I will treat this like any other beta and wait for the final version. Don't wanna go turning my phone into a pretty book end.

Now wait a cotton pickin' daggone minute, here. How do I try this with the latest .588? We don't even have a non-rooted .588 rom.

Steven storms off in a diva fit.
