Google Wallet - No Root Needed :)

Then the ball is really in Google's court. Hopefully they will stand up to Verizon and release Wallet openly for our use since I do not see how Verizon can legally keep Google from fully supporting Wallet on the Verizon GNex (unless they contractually limited themselves to get the GNex on Verizon - which could still be considered anticompetitive if Verizon forced the issue).

I would think it depends on how they're actually blocking it. We can still install it and use it, so they're not stopping that. I assume Google not supporting it is due to some kind of agreement with Verizon, but we don't know the whole story, I don't think. It's kind of the same as rooting your phone- they're not topping you, but it does still void the warranty. So Google and Verizon aren't stopping us from using Wallet, but they're not supporting it, either.

A phone designed by google with google's stock operating system ... not supporting their own digital wallet app that the phone has a chip primed and ready to work with? No way this is what google wants.

Apparently google is stopping some accounts now, and saying the phone is not yet officially supported.

No, I think you misunderstood, if you were talking about me., Google didn't just randomly lock my account. When I was verifying my info (address, SSN, etc) to add money to my card, it wouldn't go through. I'm not sure why, but I've had problems veriying this devit card in the past too, it sounds like someone has bad info somewhere, or maybe I just mistyped something. Anyway, after it wouldn't verify a certain number of times, Google put a hold on my account because it looked like fraud. If I had had a Nexus S, I could have called support, they would unlock it, and I'd go back to using it. Since I have a Galaxy Nexus, they said they won't unlock it, that's the end of it. So they didn't lock my account just because, they just won't fix it, either. I haven't heard of any cases where they stopped anyone from using it just because.

Yeah the guy kept apologizing to me. It definitely seemed like he'd get in trouble if he helped me, but felt bad that he couldn't. He did mention that he realized that if I could get it to work (it sounds like there was an issue with my card verification, so it's not even on Google's end, but once it wouldn't verify, they locked my account out because it might be fraud or whatever) that they wouldn't stop me from using it, but that he personally recommended against it anyway, since he'd had calls from people who had had money disappear, and since they weren't able to help, were basically screwed. I'm hoping at some point we do get official support. :(

So any idea if you still have the option to add the Citibank Mastercard, should you opt to go that route? Or what about using Google Wallet for online payments (the non-NFC version, which seems like it's tied in user ID only to the options on the phone)?

The prepaid account is working great for me, but I haven't tried adding any cash to it.

I signed up for the Citi MC just for this use, for my and my wife's GNex, and I'd hate for one stupid error on either of our parts to render Google Wallet useless on our phones.

Yeah I'm not sure, a Citi card may work fine. You need to verify your acct by giving your ssn, address, etc the third time you reload the prepaid card, not sure if you have to do that with a Citi card. Some people haven't had issues, I'm not sure why it wouldn't work for me.

I have a Citi card and you don't need to verify...however in the past week I had to swap my Nexus and after the swap it will no longer validate my citi card and now locks me out for 24 hours. Not sure what is going on. I'm not rooted...and it worked just fine on my previous nexus.

Fixed. Thanks!

That's not encouraging. I ought to have my card in the mail in the next day or so. Fingers crossed.

Did you reset the Google Wallet app before you swapped out your old GNex? I would imagine the app would link itself directly with the hardware for Wallet, so if you don't remove that link your account would stay tied to your (old) phone. Just a (possibly incorrect) thought.

Sounds like those of us who use the app need to be very careful. I have used the prepaid card, and added money to it once already, with no problem. But sounds like if something were to happen to my phone, I would lose whatever money is remaining on the card, as Google will be unable to help me as they normally would with a supported phone.

Posted this in post 202 when I exchanged my Gnex:

Ended up calling the "Google Money Network" and they asked for the MEID of my old phone which of course I didnt have. Then they asked for number on the emailed receipt and did some ID verification. Once verified the lady said it would take up to 72 hours to get my funds back into my account.

So if any of you turn in or sell your phone, make sure you keep your old ESN/MEID, it helps speed up their process.

That's why I never charge more than $20 total to it. No big purchases until it's officially supported, if it ever is. I definitely enjoy the convenience for small stuff like fast food, though.

They would still have to refund your money or provide you some other way of accessing your funds (prepaid credit card). The lack of support for the phone does not absolve them of their accounting responsibilities. By accepting the funds and allowing them to be added to a prepaid card Google is basically becoming a bank and there are financial regulations they must follow.

Why should they be responsible for a transaction you made knowing full well you were doing the transaction on an officially unsupported device? That's like you complaining that a a vending machine with an "out of order" sign ate your money. tsk tsk...

I would probably want my money back, too, but I'm just sayin'. On this phone right now, they don't technically owe you a thing.

Just got my GN GSM version 4.0.1 and tried this and got that weird Country/Carrier error, i'm at a loss i guess i will wait for the 4.0.2 to push out to me and give it try again. Seems this happens to some and not others. Quite perplexing

I believe the wallet APK out right now is specifically for the CDMA/LTE version

Finally tried out Google Wallet yesterday, at a McDonalds. I started it up and did the PIN unlock before getting to the register, placed my phone on top of the sensor and it worked. No reaction from the guy at the register but the sensor was placed in a way that he wouldn't have been able to see what I was using.

And the free $10 from Google covered most of the cost of my 50 piece McNuggets and small drink, so thanks Google.

I'll probably put in $20 for some "just in case" money. It was pretty cool to see it work.

I just activated a citi card yesterday, it worked fine.

Great, just received mine a few minutes ago in the mail, activated it over the phone with Citi, then immediately plugged it in to Google Wallet. No problem here, either.

Even pleased to see the app replaced the generic gray card with a somewhat accurate image of the real card, complete with expiration date listed.

It appears that a $100 limit is set, unless I enter a code they'll email me -- just in case any of you are nervous about having the full balance available to run up.

Downloaded the APK and installed. Went through the steps for setup and then tried to add the Google Prepaid Card. Everytime I try to add it thinks for a few minutes and then says their was an error adding the card. Anybody else having this issue? Am I missing a step?

Exactly, I will note one thing about the activation code, you MUST use it in within about 30 minutes of getting it. It expires, you can just click "send me a new code" in the app if you don't use it quick enough.

I have mine unlocked(no limit), I've done it on 3 different ROMS so far with no issues (YMMV).

Just an update so everyone can learn from my experience.

As I posted earlier, after a new device Google Wallet wouldn't except my Citicard. As several of you mentioned (and were correct) I had not "deactivated" the Wallet on the old phone. I actually didn't even know you needed to do that. I just hard reset the phone and sent it on it's way. Anyway, a call to Google Wallet was quite pleasant (and interesting).

The sales rep took COMPLETE ownership of my issue (even though he couldn't resolve it). He was extremely friendly and asked me "where did you get the Google Wallet from". I immediately thought, oh here we go...and I honestly told him I found it on the forums. He said "Oh OK, we have an official APK to support the Samsung Galaxy Nexus...I just wanted to make sure you were using the right APK". Huh, go figure. They do support our phone. :) Anyway, nothing he could do but give the Citi number.

I called Citi and got an immediate sales rep, no hold time. She told me that each Citi card can only be associated with one wallet. (Which on a side note sucks if my wife would have a Nexus...both our card numbers are the same...so one of us couldn't use wallet). Anyway, she went into her system...cleared the old phone's info and it immediately worked when I tried to associate the new phone with my card. Problem solved.

So lesson learned. And for everyone else...deactivate wallet before switching phones or you'll have to call Citi (which isn't that painful...since both companies offered a great customer service experience.)

Hm. The Google Wallet rep didn't have to do anything to directly support you, though. It was people at Citi that actually helped, right? Because the people I talked to at Google said they could see my account but weren't allowed to make any changes on it- which they still didn't do for you because they didn't have to. I am suprised they mentioned an official apk though, since there isn't one...

Am I the only one having an issue adding the Google prepaid card?

NOT ROOTED, worked perfect. I went to the link for the .apk from my phone and downloaded it that way and it installed easily (no airdroid or anything). Granted access to install non-market apps and that was it.

Same experience for me. Then I added $100 to the prepaid card via a Bank of America virtural credit card number (to conceal my actual Visa card number). So I'm at a balance of $110 and ready to try it out.
