Root Greetings (newbie here!)

Well, yesterday (1/1/2012) I FINALLY rooted my EVO 4G that I've been proud owner of since summer of 2010. Ever since I learned that I would be able to use the phone as a wifi hotspot for FREE(!) I thought it would be cool to do it. Both of my kids have IPods that need wifi and my wife's IPad as well, so hoping I can get that all working well! The process went fairly painless but thanks to my ever-patient wife, we were able to work through any of the 'issues' at hand! :) I'm trying to learn all I can before attempting much with my new found freedom! One thing I am finding though is when I search on certain subjects like, "How to flash ROMs", I seem to be viewing threads from say way back in 2010 - which may or may not be relevant to now.

I'm still not completely clear on the 'nandroid' thing! Is that at all the same as doing a "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" from ROM Manager? If not, please tell me the best method to do this. Also can I safely remove things like "Sprint TV" and "NOVA...whatever" (which actually, already did!)?

Welcome to the fold good sir!!!! A "nandroid" is merely an image of what your current setup is. Thats useful in the event of flashing a new rom (operating system) and things go wrong. If you ever need to go back to how your phone was before making any changes, thats what youd restore to. As far as rom manager goes, youll find that many of us advise against using it, as it tends to cause more issues than it ever fixes. With regard to the posts from 2010, many of them are still quite relevant indeed depending on what theyre referring to. Let us know what youre trying to accomplish, and im sure that we can help getting you there. Again welcome to the forum and heppy rooting :D

Now with that said. Lets first explain things. You will find it very hard to "Wear out your welcome" We Love to help :D there are several guides out in the big bad ugly world but most will not have the support you will git from here. As Mike said start with the rooting for dummies. It's the best guide in the world. :D

In my sig are a couple more guides One is My A Flash For us All. The other is by Rxpert Start here for trouble shooting or something of that nature. anyway if you have issues with the phone it is an excellent source to help get you in the right direction.

Remember the only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask. We do not ridicule or say "Didn't you do a search" f :eek: all that just ask and we will do our best to answer. Even if Someone else just asked the same exact question :D
 
And before doing much on the rooted phone, I would highly recommend moving to the newer amon ra style recovery. It is by far the most stable recovery for our Evo 4G. With this recovery, you will not have any issues with flashing roms, kernels, radios, themes.....It supports edify and amend scripting so flashing is a breeze with this recovery;)

+1. Your recovery is what allows you to make mods to your phone, and there is none better than Amon RA. It works properly, and several of the other Evo recoveries have issues from time to time. Welcome to the forums!
 
Not sure what I have going on here but I'm trying to start the flash process for a new rom BUT all of a sudden I can't get the phone to give me the recovery mode as when I press/hold POWER button/VOLUME button! Help! Once (a while ago) it did actually boot into the (system?) screen but 'recovery' was not an option...

EDIT: maybe it's b/c I didn't take the battery out? I simply powered it off...

Is this an app by same name? Where to get it?

you need to go into settings/apps/uncheck fastboot. you should be able to power off the phone now. gingerbread add this feature so that you can boot the phone faster. but it really does not turn the phone fully off.

Thanks ocnbrze, I went in and changed the Fastboot setting (unchecked). The USB debug is checked, is that ok?

At any rate, I tried to do the recovery mode again and got same response. Only choices are: Bootloader, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader, and Power Down. There simply isn't a recover mode! WUWT?!

select bootloader and then when that shows up it should have

fastboot
recovery
ya
da
dont remember but the first two are the important ones here

you will have to wait for fastboot to check for an "update" once its done then move down to recovery (volume down) and (Power) to select it

hi! i have to take my phone in for repair, but my friend rooted my phone but did not save the original sprint rom that came with the phone. any suggestions

what is your hboot?

if it is hboot 2.10 or below then follow the unrooting section ing this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html

if your hboot is 6.16 then you will need to use this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

both guides will have the ruu which has the stock rom and stock recovery that you will need to finish the unrooting process.

In the bootloader screen, turn off phone, then while pressing the volume down key, press and hold the power button. This will take you to the bootlader screen. Or you could download Quick Boot from the market and boot to the bootloader screen that way. Open Quick boot and press bootloader
