Root [GUIDE] Brick Recovery

Just to apply the KitKat patch and save stuff to my SD card instead of taking up all my internal memory and I don't like not being able to go into my phone's internal memory to find empty picture folders and yet the pictures are definitely on the phone. I want my pictures and everything possible to save to my SD card not the internal memory. Hell, I lost videos somehow I was going to show my mykids of the Hockey Game (Cops vs Firemen), because I was a Fireman and Paramedic and my son LOVES stuff like that. I did video since he couldn't come this year and now the videos are gone. They would have been fine had they been on the SD card like I want.

So I am COMPLETELY Confused here. I THINK I have everything from Step 1. Have no idea what Steps 2,3,4,and 5 are talking about

[Warning: This is going to sound rude, but I honestly don't mean it to! ]

If you don't understand the instructions in the first post, then you really shouldn't be rooting your phone. Root gives you a lot of power, and makes it possible to do things that may seriously screw up your phone, maybe even destroy it permanently. You need to be technically savvy enough to know what is and isn't safe, and to troubleshoot problems when they arise. As the old adage says, "with great power comes great responsibility". A non-rooted phone is much more difficult to screw up. If something does go wrong, then a simple factory reset will usually fix it.

If your goal is simply to put photos/videos on your SD card, then you don't need root to accomplish that. I would suggest you focus on that goal instead of trying to root your phone. You can always plug your phone into your computer via USB and copy photos to your computer for safekeeping.

In order to apply the kitkat patch it must be rooted. So that is the goal there is no other way and believe me i have asked more than just this forum because its a lot of bullshit to go through just to save to the sd card, plus getting some of the bloatware that i dont use wouldnt hurt either. BTW I am tech savvy i unlocks blackberries, i have rooted other android, but this LG Volt is just different plus its a new os I never rooted kitkat before.

Hi,
New user here. I couldn't figure out how to search thread so im sorry if this has been asked. I followed everything and it all went perfectly.

My only problem though is that I have a backup made with the LG Backup tool that I wish to restore from but the LG Backup tool is missing from the zv5 rom (odexed). Is there any way I can either get that feature back or does anyone know of an app that can restore from LG Backup files (.ibf)?

Oh! I also keep getting this "Hands Free Activation" thing pop up anytime the phone reboots. I can get past it but it comes up again on every reboot. So I figured I would ask if anyone knew how to get rid of that as well.

I know that, but you don't need the patch to to be able to save photos/videos to the SD card. System apps can still write to the SD card. I checked my wife's volt and confirmed that it is automatically saving photos to the SD card when using the built-in camera app.

plus getting some of the bloatware that i dont use wouldnt hurt either.

You also don't need root for that. See this thread.

My Volt says the internal and external memory are the same therefore sd card is not saved to and i lost everything so i need a root to apply the kitkat patch

No internal and external memory are not the same. What were you looking at? The phone has 3 storage areas. System and internal SD are 2 partitions on the internal memory, and are 4GB each. The third is your external SD card. System apps are allowed to access both internal and external SD storage. Non-system apps do not have permission to access the external SD in KitKat. Something I've not really understood why from an end user perspective, but I digress.

The stock camera can save to your SD card. There is a setting right there in the app preferences.
If this is all you need, then no, you don't need root. Just set the camera to save to the SD card.
I don't understand what you mean by losing files. There are no circumstances in which it would just up and delete your files, regardless of where they are stored. You, or someone else is doing it, or there is something wrong with your SD card.

I have to agree with spocko in that you are not tech savvy. Just because you rooted a couple old phones, probably with one-click root methods, or some other scenario where an app did it for you doesn't mean much. The instructions are clear enough for people who have never rooted a phone to be able to do it. You haven't been able to clearly communicate what you have done in relation to this guide to let anyone know where the process is going wrong.

You are tech literate, meaning that you are comfortable using a computer/phone and are capable of performing simple semi-automated tasks, but you have not to been able to communicate on a technical level with anyone here. I've been working with you privately for a couple days, have found out that haven't been able to download all the files for step one yet. You think I was able to get it to you via TeamViewer, despite me cancelling the transfer several hundred megs early, and I'm not sure you've figured out how to check the MD5, or if you've done it despite there being an extremely simple application linked in the guide, the same that I posted to you directly. I honestly feel like we're behind where I thought we were when we started.

I'm sorry if this feels like you're being called out, and I guess I kind of am, but it's not to be mean or embarrass you. You need to be aware of your actual level of skill so that you don't get in over your head and completely ruin your phone. The fact the I'm attempting to send you files, that everyone else has been able to download, through TeamViewer because you can't get it done yourself despite having 3 sources to download from and then literally take over your computer and do it for you remotely because no one else knows how else to help you speaks volumes about your skill level.

If all you need is to have your pictures and videos save to the SD card, use the stock app and set it to save to the external SD card. If that is not working, or files are vanishing from your card, then there is probably something wrong with the card. If there is something more than that that you need to do, let us know exactly what it is. At this point, I think the consensus is that you do not need root.

I've successfully downgraded. I'm stuck in Step 4 - Rooting zv3 and installing TWRP. When I run towelroot and click "make it rain" it says "Please ensure you are connected to the internet". The Volt has wifi connectivity. Any idea what is wrong?

Thank you very much, I downgraded and it works perfect. I joined the forum to see the pics in detail, I have rooted a phone long time ago but now I am getting more serious as an android user and I sure like this tutorials.

My phone tells me i have internal storage of 4gb. It does not allow anything to be saved to the sd. There is no other partition. Seeings as how I get the messages "external sd is same internal" and LG concurs I'd prefer you not try to insinuate that you know everything about the phone seeings as how you ain't looking at mine. The progress is the god damn lg secure file says it downloaded but you said it couldn't have and you ain't looked at the file of files on my desktop to tell me they are right or wrong. Kinda figured you'd do that basic step before coming on here and acting like a jackass about it. For all I know if it hasn't got 3 partitions then maybe I have a faulty phone. So seeing as it is MY phone I decide if I want it rooted or not (and I do) to apply 1 ****ing patch that really shouldn't be needed. Who buys a phone and wants ALL shit stored to the internal memory and then find out after a OTA push you lost EVERYTHING YOU HAD even applications were gone! Sure I guess I could blame Boost it was their push (who knew it would **** everything up the claimer and Boost told me files weren't affected) so I am trying to apply 1 update to never have to lose my pictures again! Help me or don't eventually someone will hopefully before I lose more pictures, tell ya what, let your wife/gf and kid die and lose their photos forever and I'll tell you "oh well you don't need to root because you don't talk geek enough"

@MayDay5822 We've tried to be helpful, especially @bg4m3r, but it's not working. With your attitude, foul language, and lack of saying "thanks", I think we're done. You are not entitled to anything here. If you insist on having root, can't follow the instructions in the OP, and can't post clear questions that others can answer, then maybe the volt is not the right phone for you.

If you are getting SD errors and not seeing an SD storage listed, then either you don't have an SD card, or it is broken, or not formatted correctly.

I never said I know everything about the phone, but I know enough to know nothing you are saying makes sense.

I've told you several times to check the MD5 of the file, handed you the software to do it, told you how, and you still haven't said if you've even tried. What am I supposed to assume? This also adds in to the whole you don't know as much as you think you do factor. This is something you should be able to do yourself. I'm not here to hold your hand. I was willing to connect through TeamViewer and walk you through the downgrade, but the rest is done on your phone, which I would not be able to help with, and I doubt you could do it yourself at this point.

I cancelled the transfer 300MB before it was done because the transfer rated dropped down to 23kbps and was going to take another 4 hours and I had to get to bed for work. Based on that, there is no way you have a valid file, and you haven't given me any information to show otherwise.

An OTA update does NOT wipe your phone. You, or someone else did a factory reset.

At this point, I find it unlikely that anyone here will be willing to try to help you.
Your attitude and lack of ability to help yourself is very discouraging.

I expected help. My mistake. I don't speak geek enough and then someone has the right to tell me what is on MY PHONE which they have never seen. I could have a defective phone. You know that LG Backup thing that comes stock on this phone? Well it gives me an IP address and regular web address and gives me my screen name and password...guess what ITS NEVER WORKED THE SITE IS INVALID so maybe I do have a defective phone seeing as that don't work and there are not 3 partitions on my phone. Furthermore IF bg4m3r were honest I have thanked him in his email and he said if I needed help doing it he'd be able to help wed or thurs cause he was off thurs so i stupidly wait til he has time the he tells me i dont have the right files (well go on teamviewer look on my desktop and every file you told me to download is there) at least i think i figured hed be able to look and say "yep ya got them" or "no this one isnt right" I dont ever tell any of my customers what is or isnt in there laptop/computer until i have looked at it. SOMETIMES shit comes defective, SOMETIMES they have upgraded/downgraded so who am I to tell them what is on their PC until I look at it. I am so sorry looking at all the files and making sure they are the right ones ya told me to get and then waiting for you to come back on your own time to help me was a crime. I now withdrawal my thanks and appreciation bg4m3r you really weren't any help after all.

YOU said you had not been able to download the tot file. YOUR words, not mine. You said you had never been able to download it because it always fails. Everything you've said has indicated that you needed that file. Excuse me for taking your word for it. As far as I know, the one I sent you didn't finish and is corrupted because you never told me you checked the MD5, or if you even understood that you needed to. You haven't been very good at helping me to help you either. Everything everyone has said or suggested is based entirely on assumptions we've had to make because you haven't been able to communicate any useful information.

LG Backup not working has nothing to do with the phone being defective. That isn't even Android. That's LG software.

None of this changes the fact that what you are trying to accomplish does not require root. Either set your camera to save to the SD card, or move the pictures and videos manually. IF the phone or SD card is defective, rooting it won't help anything. Try a different SD card. If that doesn't help, go exchange the phone. Best that it not be rooted anyway as they could refuse to take it back if it was rooted.
