Root [GUIDE] Brick Recovery

I'm using an LG Volt as a "mini-tablet" for my son. I rooted with this method successfully and we've been good for a week. The service bars always had an X next to them, but that's cool with me as I don't want or need service. Well today apparently there was a system update icon in the notification bar, and my wife decided to go ahead and update it. Now we're stuck in CWM Recovery and I cannot exit no matter what I do. Tried reboot, power off, remove battery - every time it just goes back into CWM Recovery. Should I go into download mode and repeat the rooting process all over again? Btw download mode does say "ROOTED". And no, I didn't make a backup like I should've :|

Since you have cwm, all you need to do is do a factory reset and reinstall the zv4 ROM (or StockWalk), and radio. Should wipe cache and dalvik too after. :)

He'll lose his game data, but yeah, avoid updating. I wouldn't have thought it would brick the device. Good to know.

Thanks for your reply bg4m3r!

Here's the steps I took:
  1. wipe data/factory reset
  2. install zip > choose zip from sdcard > ls740_zv4.zip
  3. install zip > choose zip from sdcard > radio.zip
  4. wipe cache partition
  5. advanced > wipe dalvik cache
Went to reboot and it said root possibly lost, and asked to fix. I said no and it rebooted back into recovery. While in recovery I reinstalled the SuperSU zip and rebooted, but it went right back to recovery.

That's unfortunate. We don't know much about the new update yet since it just hit today. Try going all the way back to step one and run the whole process. It may have altered some partitioning or something that is causing the problem and not allowing zv4 to boot. Running the flash tool will completely wipe and reconfigure everything.
We do know that it has recovery stuff in it, so the fact that you still have cwm indicates that something may have gone wrong with the update.
Another possibility is that there is some major change in the kernel and it won't work with the zv4 software. If you want to try installing StockWalk first, since it will flash the kernel with the ROM.

Ok, reflashing worked, thank you bg4m3r!

I wanted to do that from the start, but I was hoping I could salvage some time. Anyway that's no biggie, but does anyone know what domain the updates are downloaded from? I had installed the "MoaAB" hosts file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916098) so I would like to reinstall and add the domain for LG's updates to that list, making it impossible for this to happen again.

Well I just realized how stupid that question was, since the updates would come from the carrier (mine is Boost Mobile). Anyway I installed ProxyDroid and spied on the update calls - here's what I'll be adding to the hosts file to (hopefully) block updates:

127.0.0.1 144.226.247.31
127.0.0.1 dsa.spcsdns.net
127.0.0.1 oma.ssprov.sprint.com
127.0.0.1 74.125.29.95
127.0.0.1 173.194.123.5

I guess Boost piggybacks on Sprint data.

Could you make a step by step, I would very much appreciate the same thing on my boost volt.

StockWalk must stop the updates. With StockWalk i don't get prompted to update however with the first zv4 rom I do.

Prerequisites: Root; CWM Recovery or Any file explorer with root privileges
  1. On your PC/Mac, download the latest MoaAB zip from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916098 (I used LATEST_MoaAB_ADBlocking_08December2014_R2_CWM.zip)
  2. Open the zip file and extract the system/etc/hosts file
  3. Open the hosts file with a text editor capable of displaying UNIX/ANSI formatted files legibly (Windows Notepad is not an option. I use Notepad++ http://notepad-plus-plus.org/)
  4. Paste in the mappings below, anywhere in the file (I put mine near the top), and save. Make sure each mapping is on its own line, as in the code snippet below.
    Code:
    127.0.0.1 144.226.247.31
    127.0.0.1 dsa.spcsdns.net
    127.0.0.1 oma.ssprov.sprint.com
    127.0.0.1 74.125.29.95
    127.0.0.1 173.194.123.5
If you're using CWM Recovery:
  1. Drag the hosts file back into the system/etc folder in the zip file to update the zip archive.
  2. Transfer the zip file to your SD card.
  3. Boot into CWM Recovery and choose to install a zip from sdcard.
  4. Select the MooAB zip file, install it and reboot. Done.
If you're NOT using CWM Recovery or you'd rather do it manually:
  1. Transfer the edited hosts file to your SD card (NOT zipped).
  2. Using a file explorer app with root access (I use Root Explorer), navigate to your external SD card directory and Copy the hosts file.
  3. Navigate to /system/etc, scroll down to find the existing hosts file and rename it to hosts.bak.
  4. Now Paste the hosts file you copied from your SD card and reboot. Done.
Notes:
  • This will work for any Android phone, not just the Volt.
  • This will not prevent the system update notification from appearing if the update was already downloaded. In that case, you should navigate to Settings > Apps > ALL and find Google Services Framework in the list. Select it, uncheck the Show notifications checkbox and click the Clear cache button. That should immediately remove the notification. If you want to delete the already-downloaded update, use a file explorer with root access to navigate to /cache where you'll see the update zip file and you can delete it.

I also got stuck in recovery one time. Don't know what caused it. To recover I had to start over with the downgrade to ZV3. On the 2nd attempt it worked fine. More details of my experience here:
http://androidforums.com/threads/working-cwm-recovery.880181/page-4#post-6841743

Glad you got yours working!

Is that the right version of the LG Flash Tool? It keeps asking me to choose between Korea, China/Brazil, or Other when I load it up first. Then after any of those choices it asks me to login with a password?

Nevermind. I apparently don't know how to follow directions.

EDIT: So my question is now, why would I want to go through and update the firmware to zv4? What advantage do I get by going through with that?

Would you mind reposting this as a separate thread? It's extremely useful information which I'd like to bookmark, and to be able to point others to.

Probably should be stickied too.

If all you have to do is get rid of root, that can be done in the SuperSU app. If you need stock recovery, that should be in the zv4 ROM, just flash it with Flashify (before unrooting). However, the zv4 ROM is deodexed. If that is an issue, you'll have to flash back to zv3.

I don't know if you will be able to make a backup since you're flashing to a new carrier. Maybe if you write down all the settings when you switch over so you can restore them after you redo the backup, provided you have your MSL, of course.

My problem is that I flashed the phone to Page Plus using wireless workshop. Everything works, but after the phone is on 20 minutes or so, the sim card error pops and it locks the sim and data is disabled. Wireless workshop says it shouldn't do that and it probably didnt work right because i had rooted it before using their service. I'm not sure I buy that, but what I would like to do is completely restore the phone to the factory state it was in new from the box, so I could retry the flash to PP. Is that possible?

Can I stop at Step 4 but not install CWM?? Or do I have to do every single step?

Yes, you can stop there, but the benefits are greater if you keep going, CWM allows you to make an exact restore point for your phone, just in case you f*** something up, and upgrading to zv4 pre-rooted also has benefits.

Mr. bg4m3r

I've rooted Samsung phones and I personally think its much easier, anyway, I'm going to try your steps to root my LG Volt zv4, I have usb driver 3.8.1 installed on my windows 7, should I uninstall it and install your link for the driver needed? and I my cell phone does not have service, I use my Volt around my house or where there is wifi available... now do I have to put that ##72786# dialer code?? if so where or how do I do that? I really appreciate any advice you may have for me. Do I follow your steps exactly or is there something different I should do to root my LG Volt , LGLS740 android version 4.42? Thanks !!

The dialer code would be entered in the dialer(phone icon on home screen), not sure if you would need to enter it if you are only using it like an iPod (WiFi only).

it's actually a prepaid cell phone, and I don't use it to make calls anymore, I just use it to download apps and use it with wifi
