Root [Guide] How to setup Gparted/Alpharev (or any .ISO) with VMware Player (updated Jan 2012)

Ok had a go, it boots up OK with the SD card in so that's a start.

Downloaded Quick System Info & this is what I get:

SD Card storage Total 1.67GB Free 1.67GB
A2SD storage Total 0.98GB Free 857MB
Internal Storage Total 148MB Free 100MB
System Storage Total 250MB Free 22.68MB

Does that seem right?

I've only got 100MB Free & I've hardly any apps installed?

I've just put back the backup I had from the PC back to the SD card & now it's full when means I haven't enough space to put on a ROM to flash etc.

Does this seem right? I'm confused :(

Re partitoned it (again!) to 1 part FAT32 2.67GB & 1 part 1GB Ext3 & that seems to have done the trick - for now :D

Gonna reinstall all my apps from Titanium, do a Nandroid & then run it for a few days before I start flashing ROM's etc.

Could be a dodgy iso. Try and redownload it. If after that it still happens, download the version before.
I tried redownloading, a newer and an older version, none worked. I think I'll just give up on this method and try using gparted some other way.

Flashed the Leedroid HD ROM today, everything is working perfectly so big thanks to SURoot for his help with the partitioning of my card.

Thanks mate, appreciate it.

I signed up for an account on the VM Ware site, activated my account via the e-mail, and it just keeps telling me to activate my account via the e-mail, when I already have!

You clicked the link in the email then followed the link from pst 1 again and tried logging in? if so, not much I can do about that.

Why though, surely you already have an account if you have been through this guide before.

Hey guys just to let you know that hopefully i will be uploaded 2 videos one going over the step by step install for Vmware and the second for partitioning using gparted. These will be screen caps using camtasia so hopefully in good quality! Ill keep you posted :D

I ve just started uni so ive got time this week. should be up by friday! The video of using gparted isnt a screen grab or narrated so I was going to do a new one as i found the other one quite difficult to use. Ill keep you posted

.. I've almost partitioned my SD card... I'm up to the section that says "Now you are ready to partition.

Either use Lecter's video guide:
Gparted Video Guide

Or my step by step in the root memory FAQ:
If I wanted to, is there a step by step process?"... What do I do now?

this guide is step by step process if you read the 1st page

.. It's just information... But it's also really confusing. Am I supposed to get A2SD+? If so how?

I need some help too please, well I think so ;)

I have successfuly set up Gparted live using the step by step for Vmplayer, all working after many trials.

After connecting my Desire, Gparted detects it and shows a partition of 7.40GB (Its a new 8GB bought a week ago). Under the heading 'file system' is shows a green square and next to that is a yellow warning triangle. When looking at the info option for this is states;

Cant open /dev/sdb1 : No such file or directory
Cannot initalize 'H':
mlabel: Cannot initialize drive

There are some other descriptions too but figured that would be enough for some help.

To recap, I bought the 8GB card last week and copied the contents of the standard 4GB card and pasted that onto the new 8GB card. Phone worked well afterwards and all my files etc showing up. So i figure that the new card is good along with the file system.....unless you tell me otherwise.

Reason for going through all this is to have a 1GB partition for moving apps etc and also so that I can try other ROM's that require it. Yes I am rooted and S off too.

To clear this up too. If I create the new partition on the 8GB card, will that wipe the entire card?

Thanks in advance, you guys rock......:)
