[Guide] Root/ROM FAQ/Tutorial (for 1.5)

I haven't read everything entirely, but I've seen that some tutorials are windows-os based related... can you root your phone using a mac computer?

So I am rooted, and was wondering about partitioning my sd card. What does it do and if I should do it, how should I set everything? Thanks in advance...

I just wanted to say thanks to you guys here on this thread, all I've gotten is great advice, and you have made rooting my phone a very enjoyable learning experience. ;)

Glad we could all help you. Now make sure you go through all the pages of the thread and use the thanks button for all the helped you :). Lol...that would take a very long time :)

Thanks much!!! I gotta try this for my Sprint HTC Hero some time this week!!! :D

Yes you can. I believe the commands are similar. Here is a link:

Rooting CDMA Hero [Mac] - xda-developers

I tried this, but I got so confused and wasn't able to do it... and now I'm frustrated... All I was able to do was download the files and that was it... it doesn't say where to put them...

Does anyone know if there's a video that shows how to do this on a Mac computer? :(

I ran the RUU to restore to factory and i got the error that it didn't work because of missing files. It told me to use a complete file. HELP

Ok so, here's a wonderful question.. I have the recov image on my sd card - I forgot to unmount when I did the Step #14 adb shell reboot thingamajig.. granted that restarted my phone and so it should've auto-unmounted but when I went to reaccess the adb shell it told me phone could be detected - should I just start from the beginning orrrr?

Well, unfortunately that scenario took place yesterday. So, I no longer am in that cmd prompt. I'm having an issue just syncing my phone now so, the frustration is building lol.

What problem are you having syncing it? Did you end up getting rooted and ROM'd?

***Update***

I updated the FAQ section with a few things that have been coming up, such as how to wipe phones, restoring nandroid backups, etc. I also put minimal information on the new kitchen in the auto root section.

My PC won't find my Hero. Somewhere along the way of attempting to root my phone 2 nights ago, I must have messed up and broke some drivers. I'm way too lazy and frustrated to even bother with re-attempting so I'm just gonna wait it out for the official release lol.

I ran into driver issues at well. My cure-all solution has always been to remove all drivers I had installed for the device, install PDAnet, and that installed the correct drivers. It worked every single time :)

I actually did do that with help from 330D but still my phone wouldn't sync. Oh well, it was a good run while I tried lol.

Hmm..sorry to hear that. Out of curiosity did you happen to try plugging your phone into a different USB port?

You also keep saying it won't "sync" with your PC. Are you trying to use HTC Sync? When you plug your phone in, can adb see your device when you issue the command adb devices?

Yeah, I was using HTC Sync then removed all the drivers and uninstalled and tried PDANet. Neither worked. ADB Devices would not detect my phone.

should I make a backup before attempting to root? if so what's the best way to do so?

I'm planning to use the fresh kitchen to auto root, and flash a rom

Right after you root, you make a backup, then flash a rom. Follow thre instructions in the first post.

I strongly advise reading up in detail the process of rooting your phone either here on Page 1 or going to XDA and reading it there. It will help answer all your questions even if luck wasn't on my side when I attempted lol.

well I ran the auto rooter, got to the black & green menu, created a nandroid backup, & rebooted successfully

I thought I was supposed to lose all of my contacts after I rooted though?

I was able to download, install, and use shootme, and from what I read that alone means I'm rooted

Is there another way to check?, I was so nervous to do this, and the fact that it seems to have gone through so smoothly & quickly has me paranoid now lol
