Typically, I NEVER join forums but just browse and get the info I need. This tutorial was probably the best I have ever used and the community on this board is awesome. Thanks again for the dedication and help with this, my phone says thanks too. First time through I did lock up on the HTC screen when booting recovery but after replacing it with the newer version (.6 instead of .5) everything went perfect. Running 2.0d now and couldn't be happier!

The marketplace upgrade alone is worth doing this!

Yesterday I went through the process of rooting and loading a new ROM to my phone. I just wanted to say thank you to all the people who helped put together the guide and all the folks who took the time to root and hack their phones for all of us. I went through the manual process for fun and had no problems at all. It reminded me of the days when I flashed my Razr on verizon to get rid of the horrid UI, expect it was a lot easier and the custom firmwares are MUCH more polished.

When I bought my phone it was merely a placeholder until the Evo. I put up with its quirks, hoping for maybe an update from htc or announcements on the Evo, but never really enjoying my phone all that much. With Fresh 2.0d I actually really like my phone again and I have no problems waiting for the Evo. I really dig it.

Anyways, thanks again to everyone for their hard work.

I believe these are the commands:

adb remount
adb shell rm -rf /system/sd/dalvik-cache

I had the same problem.

Open command prompt and connect your phone(make sure usb debug is on)

Use this to go to the sdk directory

cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools

Use this to start the adb shell

adb shell

Use this command to reboot your phone into recovery mode

reboot recovery

Wait for your phone to fully boot into the recovery menu!

and this command does the wipe

wipe dalvik

This is all in the command prompt on your computer. I hope that helps, it is how I did it and my install was successful.



Someone may want to add this to the rom tutorial, it might helps some other folks.

Edit: ha, beaten to it. His is much simpler too

Glad to hear it worked for you. I have seen/heard before of people getting that error saying to wipe from adb. In many cases that is just a bug where it actually did wipe, which it sounds like might be the case for you.

Regardless, congrats on all working well .

OK...after reading this entire thread and both the manual and 1-click rooting methods, I have a couple of questions before I start. I want to try the 1-click method first. So...

1) Do I HAVE to check the "I have a 'with Google' phone" and go from there? Seems people have had issues with that and had to re-root or whatever. Going from memory as to the right verbiage there, after all the pages in the thread, do hopefully you know what I mean.

2) The "Root" folder. I don't see in the manual or 1-click method where this is clarifed, so do I manually create the folder on my microSD card or is this done anyway as part of the rooting process? Do I have to have or place the folder in any certain position?

I don't know about 1, I did the manual version personally.


As for 2, the Root folder refers to the top-most place in the file system.
So for the SD card, the "root" folder is not really a folder named "root" but it is the sd card itself. So anything put directly on the SD card(not in a folder) is considered to be in the root folder.

Another example is your harddrive. the "root" is

C:\

Thanks that makes sense about the root. It is confusing with the different terms and I want to get this right. Guess I'll give it a shot!

Started the Fresh Kitchen 1-click method (diagnostics read "pass") but nothing seems to be happening. The Kitchen status says "Halting Background Processes" but it has said that for almost an hour, with no change at all. Is this normal? USB Debugging is "on" and the microSD card is not mounted.

Bear - I did the pre kitchen and click with google and it bombed out, just finished up with the manual root process and all was good.

Not a huge issue, it seems to be or was a more hit or miss deal. I havenot tinkered with the new release of Kitchen, so that maybe fixed.

40 minutes later and I'm still stuck at "Halting Background Processes." Maybe the program froze for some reason. Is it OK to close it and try again by re-starting the Fresh Kitchen and clicking "Root"?

i've read the guide. i get a white triangle with a ! in the middle. so it's not rooted, but what am i missing or what am i doing wrong???

I am now stuck at the same place this guy was. Used Fresh Kitchen (finally got it going using trial and error), was going fine, phone vibrated as it restarted, then I got the white triangle with the ! inside along with a small graphic of a cell phone, and that's it. Nothing else.

I have read and re-read both guides, as well as this entire thread and don't know what to do now. The guy above asked what to do, but the replies he received were confusing to me. I'm not rooted, but do I turn the phone off and restart it, or will that brick my phone? Is it safe to dsconnect, restart and retry Fresh Kitchen?

Any help is very much appreciated!

This is frustrating. Found from Geek for me's site that the error with the ! in the white triangle is nothing major, and to try rooting again. Tried again, got the same error, so I gave up on that and am trying the manual root.

But, after downloading the correct files, unzipping to the right folders like it says in the guide, I get to entering "adb devices" at the c:\android-sdk-windows\tools prompt. After entering the command I get a message "'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."

What am I doing wrong?

Hiya Fenga. I got your pm but figured I would reply here. This way if I am not able to assist you hopefully someone else can. Sorry to hear you are having problems with the auto root. I found it easier and more of a learning experience to do it manually, which I see from above that you are attempting to do now.

From what I can tell, it looks like you may have something in an incorrect folder. When you open your command prompt and type cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools and then hit return, does it give you an error by any chance and just sit at the command prompt? I'm thinking that there is a possibility you may have unzipped the folder, but that it is within another folder. Double check that you only have android-sdk-windows as a folder on your C drive. That folder should not be in any other folder.

I am out of town this week with limited internet access, and am currently in the hotel for the evening. The internet here is slow as all hell, but I have managed to find an "un-secure" "linksys" network and that seems to be working better. Anyways, I am on EST and will be going to dinner soon. If you double check the above and are still having problems send me a pm or reply here with a time tonight that I can work with you on this. There is a live chat function on this board that I have found to be very helpful. Again, it is currently 6:38pm EST my time so let me know what works for you and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for your reply. At the cmd prompt, I have "c:\users\myname\android-sdk-windows". This directory is where I unzipped the sdk files. Then I created a sub-directory called "tools" which is where I unzipped the asroot2 file and the image file.

From reading the guide, this is what it sounded like I needed to do. Should I not have a "tools" sub-directory? Is there supposed to only be a directory "android-sdk-windows" with all of the files in that directory, including the asroot2 and the image file?

It isn't hard to change things around, but I just want to make sure I do it correctly so my Hero is rooted and I can move on to the yummy goodness!

Nope. You actually put the files in the wrong place. They should be in your C drive so that path is C:\android-sdk-windows not C:\users\name\etc etc.....In addition, if you look at the files in the zip, you will see the android-sdk-windows folder. That folder (which also contains the tools folder thus you don't need to create it) goes on your C drive. Do not put it in any other folder.

Not meaning to barge in, but I may need some help....using manual root, got to step 18 in the commands. When I did "flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img" I got the "out of memory" error. Any suggestions?

That does not mean that there is not enough room on your SD card. It is an error that sometimes happens. Since you have verified that the image is in fact on your SD Card, you should be good to go to the next step.

My phone is 'working', but:

1) my voicemail doesn't work at all (force closes). If it does work, the vm plays but I hear no sound.

2) My phone can send and recieve calls, but most of the time the call will connect with no sound at all, either direction. Only fix is to pull the battery.

3) Now my alarm goes off, but has no sound (I think I'm seeing a pattern here). I've verified my alarm sound is up all the way in my settings.

Is this something that should be cleared by reloading the ROM again? Or should I try another ROM? Its frustrating because so many others seem to be working great...
