Root [Guide]ROOTING HTC android 2.2.1 or lower with unrEVOked - Windows (updated 20th December 2012)

right i have been reading/learning and would like to install the cyanogen rom, so can i ask do i have to update the radio or is the current ok? also is it just a case of putting the rom zip on the root of the sd card running nandroid backup and flashing the rom?

is the anything else i should consider or do ?

im looking forward to this finally.
are you already on froyo 2.2?
If the answer is yes then you shouldnt be concerned about flashing a radio.
If you are interested in CM7 then you can put the ROM zip on sdcard, download the CM gapps from the wiki and put that on sdcard, do a nandroid backup, wipe the device using recovery (wipe data factory reset)
flash the Rom zip, flash gapps zip, reboot

CM is slightly different and google took them to court and are not allowed to distribute googles apps as part of the rom.

once done if you have an ext partition you will need to install s2e (simple to ext) so that a2sd will work

yes im on froyo 2.2 , i looked at the wiki and there are no gapps for the desire, which one would be ok? also i found a comment on xda which said

'With Cyanogen Mod 7, you can choose which Gapp you need when you set up the first Gmail account, as a CM 7 user I no longer update this gapps package.
By the way, the gapps package is only to be used with CM6'.

does this mean i need it or not?

ARRGG i just did a naindroid backup and my screen is just reloading the white screen with HTC logo? what has gone wrong? update.. is this a bootloop? going to try recovery. Also cannot find the download link for cyanogen.

This is in the FAQ. restoring the nandroid should fix it

yes good old FAQ i found the answer after my post and fixed it.

can you link me to where i may find the rom cyanogen as i got one but now sure if its right?

does this look correct? update-cm-7.0.3-desire-signed.zip ?

Thats the latest stable build, yes.

Best bet is go to the "All about rooting" faq and follow the link to XDA. That thread has all the roms and their links in it.

Edit> Rastaman smells.

Ok i followed the link in the FAQ to the xda links which is where i got the link from but i was not sure it was correct as its file name was a little none convincing.

I have found a GApps download.

will have a go at it shortly fingers crossed

another triumph, as i have figured out the emails now, but i still need this aps2sd and im unsure about how to get it installed, when i partitioned my card i used a pc programme not gparted, and im not sure what end i put the partition as at the time i was not aware it mattered. i partitioned off 512 to 1gb though as advised.
do i have to put the app onto the sdcard and run it? as the guides are looking a bit to techie for me in thier current language. update.. im reading the wiki and it says cyanogen 6 has apps2sd included is this same for 7? does this mean i dont need to flash anything separate.

hotmail is done via the email application on the device.
there are also apps for this and is not managed by accounts and sync directly.
please keep that off this thread and create a new one else where for that help

Thanks i found the answer myself earlier, can i ask if i change my sd card say for a larger one is there anything i have to do or will it be just a straight swap?

Hello AF,

I am planning to root my Desire first time and this thread is the best resource I have found, for that. Rather than just following some instructions blindly, I think, I will now understand what exactly I will be doing at each step. Plus, from the replies on this thread, it looks like if the instructions are followed carefully, rooting should not be that difficult. This helped me to finally collect the courage and finalize the decision of rooting... Thanks for that... :)

I have just a couple of more questions. I have read rooting FAQs and this particular thread a couple of times. So, I am pretty sure, these questions have not been answered on this forum before (but, if they have been, please pardon the re-post... :p)

Mine is a non-branded Desire bought in India. Right now I have installed official HTC Gingerbread on it. So, I will not be able to provide the FroYo software information etc. I will get FroYo reloaded from HTC service center before proceeding with the root though. If required, at that time, I can give you this information.

The questions are as follows -

1. Does it matter if or not SIM is present in the mobile while performing the root?
2. If SIM is must, then can incoming calls/messages interfere with the procedure?
3. Somebody said that Wifi must be turned off. If SIM is present, should data connection be also turned off?

Thanks for the help in advance and keep up the awesome work you guys are doing... :-)

Unfortunately if you have upgraded to developer only 2.3.3, you will not be using unrevoked to root.

You need to go to: Revolutionary and read all the documentation there

In regards to the sim, it should be fine. Orange UK users are advised to remove sim, but no one else.

2 and 3 are irrelevant

I know I cannot root with the HTC Gingerbread ROM. But, if I get the FroYo build reinstalled from HTC service center, I should be able to root that using unrevoked, right?

Just use Revolutionary, it will be easier then getting a service center to downgrade you, and then running unrEVOked again.

The issue is that I want to root the device this weekend since I have some spare time. I have read and understood the documentation for the unrevoked method. I will not be able to read the revolutionary documentation by this weekend due to time constraints. Hence, I am planning to straight go to HTC service center and get the FroYo installed (which will take max 2 hours) and then, perform the root with the familiar unrevoked method. Hence, it would be really nice if you could confirm if or not this will work.

Well if the service centre is able and willing to revert you to Froyo, including rolling the HBOOT back to the previous version, then it will work. The hboot is key - if they replace the ROM but leave the 1.02 hboot you'll still need revolutionary to root it.

thats gonna cost you money
revolutionary is much like unrevoked
just install drivers
run the software
connect device
once completed flastboot flash recovery whatevertherecoverynameis.img or use android flasher to flash it
