Root [HOW-TO] Simplified Root + Recovery + Custom ROM

Did You enable Android debugging?
After 12 minutes, pull battery and start over. If you get an error msg, pull battery and start over. It might take as many as ten tries, but it will never harm your phone. My 2nd V it took 5 tries. My spare took 5 sec, go figure.
Just make sure you do a total reboot after every failed attempt (puling the battery and starting over counts as a reboot).
 
I followed Whyzor's OP and rooted my phone. I flashed the BACKside CM7 ROM as suggested. My battery seems to be draining faster than before root. Altho not optimal, I can live with that. Unfortunately my phone volume using my headset is way TOO low to be usable. Is this a function of the root? The ROM? or something else.

Open your app drawer and select dsp manager, you have to set it up,there are settings for headphones, phone speaker &Bluetooth, also a graphic equalizer for each one.

Let me know how it works out for you.
If you just installed your rom, give it a few days if you are having issues, it takes a few days before everything runs smoothly.

Thanks BadBlue. I made a call and opened the DSP app. It wasn't clear what I needed to adjust, but the call seemed louder. What exactly do I adjust to have louder phone volume with my headset? DRC Enable? Effect Strength? Bass Boost? Equalizer? Loudness? Virtual Room?

I'm familiar with DSP effects in home theater but why do I have to adjust these just to increase my phone volume?

Can you or one of the other experienced members suggest a ROM other than the BACKside Green Machine? My impetus for rooting was to gain more internal memory and dump bloatware. But honestly, I prefer the factory ROM to what I am running now. My notification icons are too small and indistinct, my phone volume is too low, the scrubber line on my podcast streamer stalls, my battery life is less, and I can't move any more programs to the SD than I could before I rooted.
 
Froyo ROM: Harmonia or Resurrected Bumblebee ( Harmonia has more space, Bumblebee has more speed).
Gingerbread: Harmonia 2 or MiRaGe

If your still running backside cm7, when you open dsp manager "not during a call"select headset, popup menu will appear ,you will have to play with the settings, "to each his own". I have strength enable set at moderate and the equalizer set the same as my car stereo,it's actually too loud.

As far as bloatware and internal space, download titanium backup, you can get rid of bloatware and move what u want to the sd card. I have 30apps with 120mb internal.

If u use a lot of apps get a bigger sd card and use link2sd found in the all things root guide.

But you are correct battery life is tough, but there are ways around that too

Thanks HTH. I followed MacFett's Link2SD tutorial. Now I am running similar numbers to you and enjoying the rooted experience more. I still have some issues with phone volume, DSP and ROM induced forced closures or freezes. But my original issues/problems with VM bloatware and insuffient storage are now thins of the past.

Thanks, Whyzor! I'm fixing my friend's Optimus V today and this guide helped me out so much especially since I haven't had the Optimus V in so long and forgot most of the rooting stuff :D

Its hard to believe the v is still going strong especially with the recent low prices on the evo v 4g (awesome phone ). That said, I'm reviving my old op v for the wife so I'll be back soon! Thanks for keeping it alive!:thumbup:
 
Hi all. I joined to report my results.

I had found the forum and this thread which was a blessing. I had the dreaded low space message from my phone many times. I was like everyone else, tired of it.

I was very concerned about bricking as I had heard enough about that to be scared.

I took it slow and read the OP prior to starting then read it again. I aquired BACKside-IHO-VM670-05022012, gapps-gb-20110828 and GreenMachineTheme-05022012.

My fear never met me halfway. It went well and my phone has lots of space.

The Green Machine Theme is very good. I feel like I have a brand new phone.

If you notice any problems with that build then try the 01312012 build. It's the most stable of all the BACKside builds.
 
Thanks AndyOpie150 and I will post any undesired behavor. I had read that that was the best build and I am not sure why I decided on what I thought was the latest build. But I have had in running for 3 days now with nothing out of the ordinary.

One thing you may notice is a rotation delay after a while, or after using some apps like Skymap or Google Maps, this has be fixed for the most part in new kernels, just search "Optimus V - All Things Root" for kernels and look for ones built after June/July of last year.
 
The only odd thing which I assume should work is the updater. Whether its <settings/cm settings/system> or the app in the drawer. When it starts its says checking for updates "downloading manifest" after about 15 seconds it says the app has stopped unexpectedly and a force close button appears. Not sure if this is a bug or what/how I installed.

JerryScript deleted his account on the website that BacksideUpdater looks to for the manifest that is why it is force closing.
 
It really boils down to the quality of each phones processor. The better the processor the newer the BACKside build you can run.
The newer builds put more of a demand on the processors.
This phones processor is sub-par. My spare's is top notch and can run anything.
This phone can only be overclocked to 825MHz before rebooting and I can Max out the spare.

If you just want to overclock the stock ROM, pickasticks-07a Kernel will work nicely on 2.2.1. If you have 2.2.2 you will need the picasticks v7 remix any kernel found here [FIX]Black screen with custom recovery and custom roms - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com All you have to do is wipe cache partition and Dalvik cache.

Hi, I'm so sick of "No Space", that I'll risk blowing up my phone. I saw your response to the query, 'how do I get space'.... You responded re rooting and how to root an Optimus V'. I've tried following your suggested guide to: "All Things Root", and look for, "All Things Root Guide sticky//Link2SD and you", but can not find the second part, the guide. I already have the Link2SD app., but I need the "How To". Can you send me a link please? I'd be most grateful!
 
Are you now rooted? I can talk you thru whatever part needs doing (if my 3G holds up).
 
Hi, sorry I tried reading through the entire forums but I don't see answers for this newbie question:

I downloaded the Gingerbrickv1.2.apk (it comes in a .zip file) and I see it with my AndroZip File exploxer, but how do I install it? Do I rename it to .exe? When I click on it it ask me if I want to extract. Should I do that?

Update:
I downloaded directly from the phone browser instead of using the PC link to USB and I was able to install it.

now on to the rest of the fun part, these forums has been helpful, TIA
