If Sprint released the Evo3D and SGS2 and Photon on the same day which would you pick?

No question, the SGS2 blows off the Sensation by country mile.

Play at home quiz - try those same tests, same way, same timing - in other words, play along with Sam on your existing phone, while the vid runs. Practice a few times, remember you can stop the youtube, and remember to clear cache and go to beginning if you foul up and need a do over.

Why does my Evo begin to render the technobuffalo.com page within a few seconds? I was fully nearly fully loaded 2 seconds after the SGS2, but then went into that annoying halt with about 10% showing (didn't do any java console dumps to see why, don't care why, care about results).

Why does my Evo - with a rom/kernel combo that performs differently for me than for novox77 - perform not as well as the SGS2, but acceptably behind - yet blows away that Sensation on all counts of scroll speed, pinch zooming?

Somethings terribly borked - I don't know what, I only care if the comparison was fair. So - here's what I'm going to try to do: somehow get Sam's earlier vid that I hated and side by side it - or time things if I can't do that - to see if the Sensation is performing the same day in, day out.

If they come out different, perhaps something amiss.

If they come out the same and I didn't notice it before, then my gut reaction will be to ascribe that to what I _have_ seen on my Evo - when coreleaking along for long sessions, along with bloat-heavy Sense apps, I can make my Evo browser that slow.

No way do I find that acceptable on the Sensation if that's happening - in my opinion, note, very premature opinion.
 
how does the atrix stack up hw wise (looking beyond the lock down)...

How so (flawed)? I assume you mean other than lockdown, and tegra 2 (which is only subjective flaw depending on if one really wants high profile h.264 support).

I'd like to chime in (what else is new?).

I've a pal with an Atrix - totally loves it, came from a Nexus One, very expert at Android and handsets.

They cannot get any reliably-working VoIP right now - tried 'em all, beginning with Skype, almost none of them - and no effective videochatting at all. They can hear me clearly, but they sound like a tiny voice next to roaring freight train. Best we got working was fring, audio only, and it sounded like there was a ground-loop hum, buzzing at maybe 60 Hz (old turntable days reference). Playback quality of my voice, not great.

They report great sound quality on normal calls, claiming best ever in a cell phone, and great music playback.

So - if it's borked on all apps, what does that tell us?

The magical and wonder dual-core approach breaks down if a system service or its vendor-specific parts screw the pooch on process management (using generic process word there, not unix definition - so I mean that to cover the gamut). Because this problem is specific to the Atrix in the Tegra-2 or dual-core world, it's on Motorola to fix. They're evidently aware of it, so my pal isn't concerned and is expecting an update - but there's weak point.

I've spent no time with the Atrix's pentile qHD, but coming from a Nexus One, my pal says it's a big improvement and really likes it. So, the 3vo rgb qHD can only go up from there.
 
I was gonna recommend some other apps but then saw this:

That's bizarre.

I tried Fring awhile back on my Hero... there was some line noise then as well... but that's just really strange about the VoIP in general. Good that they are working on it, but what specifically do you think caused this anomaly?

I'd prefer a battery hog rap than a slower than S II processor rap that it has now. At least 1.5Ghz would put it in the ballpark.
 
No need for the name-calling please. Let's not go down that path and stay on the issue.

Here's the thing:
Overclocking is something only a small minority of people want. Even super tech geeks don't always care about overclocking.

But a LOT of people expect better battery life. There's already enough fear out there that dual-core phones are going to drain even faster. Sure 1.5 looks better to the spec-junkies, but the larger audience will appreciate the battery life more.
 
I underclock/undervolt my phone the vast majority of the time to save battery. If I need the extra processing power, it only takes a few seconds to load a different profile. So I thought it was pretty cool that HTC underclocked it to 1.2GHz stock, but it was designed to go at 1.5GHz. It means I can safely ramp up if I need, but I'll still probably underclock/volt it lower even still. All you do when you overclock without the need is create waste heat. Even with good governors.
 
Wouldn't it be nice if our Smartphones had power settings like Laptops do? So, we could keep our phones in "Efficiency" mode and extend the battery at the cost of speed & screen brightness. Then when we wanted to play a game or do some heavy usage turn it to "Full Power". It could adjust processing speed, screen brightness, & other little things to make the battery last longer or to really speed it up. If you have a Laptop I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

Better to design an efficient phone. Simple is better.

Aye, I'm right there with you. Even computers come with power saving options in the control panel, or at least the windows systems I have do.

Although, I do have to say SetCPU does perform something of the same function in regards to CPU, at the least. IIRC, there are also apps out there that can use your location and/or time of day and activate/deactivate phone functions like wifi/bluetooth.

Um, Stroker, I've never owned a "Sammy" and I currently own a Evo 4G. Most of the recent "rap" that "fanbois" have spread is based on reviews of the Sensation which has the same processor/GPU as the 3D.

Needless to say, I am not impressed with the Sensation or S II (or anything else on the horizon over the next 3-6 months. I'll be waiting for the quad cores at the end of this year.

I'll check back in with you at the end of June after the release of the 3D.

I was thinking the same thing. Going along the lines of what Viper said, I think it would probably have to be incorporated with the OS, but why limit the capabilities of the hardware?

If the hardware is capable of doing 1.5ghz then let it use the full 1.5 if it needs it. If it requires less, tell it to use less...We shouldn't have to root our phones for basic things like this, IMO.
 
well if rooting gets you what you want then why not just do it?
you say 'have to root' like its a bad thing.

i doubt htc or anyone is going to add setcpu type functionality into a stock rom. the masses just aren't ready for that much power lol. in my opinion these functions are best left to people willing to do what is necessary to get them.
 
You could just hide a functionality like SetCPU behind a warning popup in the Developers section, and most users wouldn't even know it was there. And if they did find it by accident, they would likely to shy away from it if there was a popup that said device damage may occur if you push the unit out of it's physical limits or say something like "Advanced users only"

I always thought root should be a toggle in a similar way.

I already pre ordered the EVO 3D at my sprint store. The EVO was by far the best phone I ever had and I said I wouldn't need to upgrade for a long time. And it's till an awesome awesome phone but I sold mine back to Sprint and went back to using my Lotus cause at the time I was really hoping the 3D would be out June 4th and now I am screwed till like June 24th. But I am not big on the 3D neither but the dual core processor and extra memory and internal space yes. And the gingerbread 2.3 and sense 3.0 can't wait. I don't root but I've had read all these arguements and debates over Nexus S and EVO 3D to each his own. I love HTC and Sense. I had a TP2 prior to my EVO 1st smart phone ever and at 1st I loved it then I didn't like it anymore. My favorite thing about it was the keyboard was great to type on and the tilted screen. Now I useSwype or Flex T9 and I could care less about a keyboard. Just bring out the 3D already.

You mean like the sum total of cpu stepping, scheduler, governor, and memory management subsystems in combination w/ after market tools (setCPU, Colins ph, autokiller, etc.)?

People argue and debate over rooting? I'm flabbergasted as to what the counter (against) argument would be short of, 'it would be wise to put stock ROM on phone prior to any hw warranty returns'. For instance, you could have 2.3 on your Evo now if you rooted, at least I would think as I have it on my older phone.
 
Sorry, this is somewhat related, but thought it was kinda cheezy (in case nobody had already pointed it out), but did anybody else notice that Samsung made a really cheezy way to tie in all the Samsung Galaxy S 2 devices across the different carrirers?

In other news, I've changed my mind again. After much thought, and my phone breaking (so now I have no phone) I've decided the Evo3D is the right phone for me LOL... I've been hoping against hope that I could get my Smartphone repaired and wait to compare the S2 & Evo3D in person. Alas, it's been 38 days and my Smartphone is still being repaired.

But hey! A lot of positives. I'm getting a higher resolution display, a better battery, a better manufacturer, and I don't have to wait past June 24th to upgrade. Good stuff...

LOL...No diss on the Transformers at all. It was up there as one of my favorite cartoons, along with G.I. Joe and others (there's a thread that was going earlier on that had a BUNCH of old school cartoons being discussed based on a comparison with the EVO 3D's appearance). Just thought it was kinda cheezy how the names intertwined for each respective SGS2.

I don't think the EVO 3d would be a bad choice for anybody at all. It will still be one of the "top dogs" in the market. There's just a lot more competition this year, as supposed to even last year when the EVO was first released.
