With such great privilege comes great responsibility. I'd hate to have to make such tough decisions for people regarding their cell phones. Whew!;)

OMG, I'd better stop reading before my image of TBH is shattered. I used to think they were some bad ass hackers, not 'mellow dramatic princesses'. I've yet to hear anything even remotely surprising or disheartening.

All the stuff he shared with us has been talked about since before I picked up my first Android device last July. Who cares if the head of Verizon himself is the source that's saying it now, it hasn't made the last 9 months with my DX anything short of spectacular. Why is anybody sobbing in their beer right now?

Because it just might turn out that Verizon has us on a list and is currently tracking us? Ha, since when is that news? Verizon has had me on their list for the past 5 years, ever since I called them up and told them to put me on it... it's that list they keep of people who pay them money.

Oh yeah, and as for tracking me, they've been doing that for the past 5 years as well. They track me with this thing they call a cell phone. They gave one to me after I gave them $200 dollars. Then they assigned me a telephone number with which they track my every move with. I know because they send me this thing in the mail once a month that shows me EVERYTHING I've been doing on it for the past 30 days. Gasp.... can you believe it???

Yeah, put this in perspective and let's just get a grip shall we. This is all laughable.

I SBF'd back tonight. If they have my meid, there is nothing I can do.

Sucks.

Why? Cause Verizon tracked you? Does it really matter? Does your phone still work?
Come on everything tracks us. From your car to what you watch on tv. especially your laptop, tablet, desktop, phone(s).

More so is the fact that yesterday we didn't know this and we were fine. Phones worked and we were still on the network. The only thing that has changed, at least the way I see it, is now "they" know, that we know.

I went back via SBF because I chose to. You don't have to patronize me with all of the other tracking data that I'm already aware of.

And you are easily one step behind what is going on.

What's with all the anger? I don't think anyone here is condemning anyone for SBF'ing or not.

theory: the "will verizon follow suit" thread asking if verizon was gonna follow in at and t steps by sending out notice letters of automatic enrollment in data plans to tether users would fit well in all this if you made some "list."

Im standing my ground. I've never been so attached to a cell phone in my life like I've been with my DX. I've never heard the term rooted, sbf, etc before I bought my phone the morning it was released and I've had the best time with it than any other electronic device that I've owned.

So if Verizon isn't rich enough and wants to hinder my experience in any way by being rooted i dare them. Im not flashing back to 2.2.340 and im sticking with GB. I've fought with big wig companies before and Verizon is no different.

"They may take our devices, but they'll never take our FREEDOM!"

^ Seriously. As long as you don't use tether, which I don't, I see absolutely no way you can get in any trouble. The only thing you can't do is use verizon features which you didn't pay for (tether).

In case you guys didn't know the government already ruled on something exactly like this with iphones being jailbroken:

iPhone jailbreaking (and all cell phone unlocking) made legal - Yahoo! News

http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/yt...*http://www.eff.org/press/archives/2010/07/26
Apple fought hard against the legalization, arguing that jailbreaking was a form of copyright violation. The FCC disagreed, saying that jailbreaking merely enhanced the inter-operability of the phone, and was thus legitimate under fair-use rules.

Eh, so whats done is done, or isn't done. But for now, My phone still works, Im liking my GB tracked? leak. And no worries. If Verizon screws with me too much, Ill go to the company that screws with me the least.
Ony problem with that logic is that it will probably be Verizon and AT&T as the only options a couple of years down the road.

I don't think I'm going to rush to SBF either. While I value everyone's opinions posted here, it just doesn't make sense to me. I'm not a frequent user of Wireless Tether, in fact I've used it just once to see if it worked. That's it.

I'm sure Verizon tracks a lot of what we do on a daily basis. I know my ISP (Comcast) has sent letters to people for downloading illegal copies of movies via Torrent. They're tracking EVERYTHING. I'm sure they've known in some capacity who's messed with their phones like this. I'll take my chances as well.

I appreciate everyone's opinion, but I think a lot of us are overreacting a bit. To each their own I guess.

Personally, idc about getting tracked from flashing gb. Or about the tether issues. I don't have to use the leak, so screw verizon. That settles the GB issues as far as I'm concerned. What does concern me is that the carriers and manufacturers are finally flexing their muscles and trying to put an end to the root community. They've made attempts before by making root hard to obtain and by locking the bootloader, but I think this is going to just get worse. they're making a statement with this GB build.

Hey faber, if you've got something against me, spill it. What's with all these veiled responses?

ok guys lets all calm down and remember what we are here for (to help not condemn or argue)..the main reason we all choose this coomunity is because its considerate and upstanding and i understand everyone is a little upset with whats going on right now but over the last two days i have seen more posts geared toward anger and people arguing then ever,,,i am taking no ones side ,rather im taking everyones side so please guys lets all chill out and analyze things and help each other the way we do best,,,if someone wants to sbf or not back to 2.3.340 who gives a damn its their device not anyone elses to comment about and if someone wants to flash the gb leak let them ,,,we are here to help and i hope folks are not loosing sight of this

Oh the sky is falling again? Oh dear...

I have no issues switching from network to network and from OEM to OEM until I've found the combination I like the most. Perhaps Verizon wants nothing to do with hackers, rooters and ROMers... fine. I'm sure someone wants my money. I don't see Sprint, or T-Mobile trying any of these shenanigans. In fact, I think Sprint rather speaks to us in a tone that says, "annoyed with all the restrictions on other carriers? Come to Sprint". Like this commercial for instance...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlkT7gRM0xo
Fair is fair.

Well, it's nice that you have it like that but most of us still have over a year left on our contracts. When I'm done with my current contract sure I CAN switch then. But unless I want to shell out $$$ in penalties I'm stuck with verizon until June 2012. Even after that, I'd still have to give up my 10% verizon corporate discount and go with an inferior network (as all other networks are inferior versus verizon in NYC). So while the choice IS mine to make, it's not nearly as easy to make for me as it is for others.

But none of this might matter. I think by the time I can get a new phone with another carrier, every EVERY phone company will incorporate these new tracking abilities. Maybe not Sprint, but in the realm on priorities, service is the most important factor when it comes to phones. Who cares if you have root if your carrier sucks? And the fact remains, Sprint service sucks in NYC and their "4G" is so slow compared to LTE that it's laughable.

So like I said before, I'm just going to keep my phone as is and see what comes.

I have a few quick thoughts. The amount of poor logic or bad information surrounding this is astounding so I don't think I can wade through the mountain to correct it all, but:

- If you think you are justified in tethering because you pay for unlimited data, you are wrong. Period. Actually, if you think paying for unlimited data means you have the right to use as much as you want, you are also incorrect - and WE, as consumers, created this illusion and this misguided sense of what we are owed. Nothing is unlimited but we choose to demand and buy "unlimited" packages.

- Everyone put P3droid up on a pedestal. He's just a guy who can code and who has some contacts at Motorola. I am thoroughly respectful of what he has provided for the DX community, but it's not his responsibility to forewarn everyone of Moto's plans. If you want to keep your contacts, you must be respectful of how much they allow you to tell, and we have no idea where that line fell or when P3 got the information he did.

- The reality is there is only so much VZW can do with a list of rooted users. Screw it. If VZW screws us and decides to bear down on root users, there are other carriers that will take my money.

- Lastly, screw Verizon and all of the other carriers for not understanding the simple, clean, foolproof solution to this problem. We should all be on wholly metered plans. There should be no unlimited, there should be no packages. We should pay for this like we pay for electricity. If that happens, nobody cares if we root or tether or let a phone sit dormant for a month. Sure, it takes a little money away from VZW for months that people who purchase a package don't use, but I be that would be easily offset by people who would let their usage go nuts because they pay a reasonable rate for all of it instead of crazy overages.

I for one am exhausted with all of this, tinkering with my x and what not has gone from fun (lots of it) to just downright exhausting and time consuming, i love to mod and tinker and love my x but when a piece of technology stresses me out this much then its time to step back for a bit,,,all everyone's doing on forums across the board is arguing and this is striking paranoia in the minds of many and i don't blame them ,,,,this has gone from fun to downright crazy

OMG, I'd better stop reading before my image of TBH is shattered. I used to think they were some bad ass hackers, not 'mellow dramatic princesses'.

Mine was shattered a while back, just reading the fighting back and forth over twitter lol

Sad because from the sounds of it these people are parents and are actually raising kids, YIKES :)

Lots of drama since GB came out and I've removed a few people I follow just because the drama way overshadowed the "news".

While I appreciate all everyone has done in this hacking community with the android, some of these people need anger management and alcohol counseling LOL

Alcohol typing muscles are the BEST!

I don't use tether at all, but my concern is the slippery slope here. Next step could be for VZ or ATT to start limiting our home use.... $10 for a second pc, $5 for a WiFi printer...oh man i can see it now.

you mean like this: http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB409045#fbid=iDotTBEWwXV

as for there google putting in a secret code to track root users, why not use the market "purchases" instead? how many of you have installed ad block or wireless tether from the market?

verizon doing this? sure why not

President Camacho: Now I understand everyone's shit's emotional right now. But I've got a 3 point plan that's going to fix EVERYTHING.
Congressman #1: Break it down, Camacho!
President Camacho: Number 1: We've got this rumor and everyones Not Sure. Number 2: You have the ability to react any way you so desire. and Number 3: You have the choice to not use these devices.

At this point all we can do is wait and see what the future brings.
Personally, I don't expect anything more than maybe getting auto-enrolled into a tether plan (if you choose to use tethering). I don't think they are going to punish anyone for rooting.
I'm not going to worry about it because there is nothing that I can do until I know the facts.

Have a good day everyone, I'm going to! :)
