Ok so when this is all said and done and our DX's turn into iphones what device will be left for devs and users to roam free on? I keep hearing the Nexus. Isn't that googles flagship phone?

Well, there hasn't been a Nexus on VZW yet. Waiting on P3droid to confirm what'll happen with the Nexus series.

My God, what are you spreading all this misinformation about Google?

They are neck deep in all of this...
They have to ok everything going into Android devices...
They have no choice but to do as Verizon/Moto says or they'll lose money...

Seriously, where are you getting this stuff?

First...I would appreciate you not putting words in my mouth...I have said nothing that is incorrect about google...just taking the words from the article that I was directed to ...

In said article it stated that google has veto power over what is and isn't done with Android...if you want to argue that...take it up with the author of the article...

None of that nonsense even faintly resembles anything anchored in reality. And clearly shows a lack of knowledge about Google as a whole.

Again...take it up with the author of the article that I was directed to...

Google's suddenly getting thrown under the bus for being a bad guy for wanting to protect their reputation and guard their revenue stream? Gosh I guess I'm a huge asshole too then because I also care about the way people perceive me, and I take an active interest in my income.

Again, putting words in my mouth...where did I ever call google an "asshole?" Never...my whole point was that Google is not a white knight...no more than Apple or Microsoft...they don't care about being open, or you or me...they want to protect their profits just like any other corporation out there...

We should clear up one point before we go any further... Google makes zero dollars from the licensing of Android. Android is a side project of theirs, one of hundreds of side projects Google is involved in. 97% of Googles revenue comes from advertisers. Google knows what they're doing, they were one of the biggest companies on the planet long before they released Android. And they still will be even if they shut down Android tonight!

What ia your point? Did I ever say anything to the contrary? No I did not...all I said was that its worth too much money for them to cut ties with Moto or VZW over practices like this...and if they cared that much about being open...then shutting off Moto/VZW from Android would have happened already ...

Yes they could pull the plug on the whole thing and wouldn't blink an eye. Insinuating that they are somehow intimidated by Verizon or Motorola is absolutely hilarious. They make money off of every OS, off of every OEM and every carrier across the globe. Unless you can name me one that doesn't offer it's customers access to YouTube, access to Gmail, or the use of the Google search engine?

Continuing to put words in my mouth isn't going to get you very far...I never said they were intimidated in the least...simply that their love of money outweighs their desire to be completely open...

Their fingers are in everything. Android does help them widen their scope somewhat over the mobile wed. But it absolutely is not essential for their company to continue it's worldwide dominance over world wide web advertising. Once you understand that you'll also be able to grasp the idea that nothing in P3's blog about this spyware being implemented by Verizon has anything to do with Google. Google's been tracking is since day zero, but not for Verizon or any other carriers sake. They track us for their advertisers.

You're not saying anything everyone doesn't already know...notice that I never claimed that VZW and Google are conspiring to track us at all...but you go ahead and continue to put words in my mouth if it makes you feel better...

If Verizon wants to track us to SUPPOSEDLY throttle back our internet usage, that directly effects Googles income stream, so why in the **** would they be helping them with that? Ask yourself why they would chose to shoot themselves in the foot like that before you accuse them of such a preposterous notion.

Never said Google was helping...

Name me another company that's been taken to court for trying to give a service away for FREE! Now then, you want to slam a company like that go right ahead. But those of us who respect the example they have led by in hundreds of other situations won't stand by and listen silently. Especially when the charges are so blatantly fraudulent.

Ahh...so the truth finally comes out...you're an Android fanboy that can't possibly accept that Google might do something wrong...

I have a lot of respect for Google and use the vast majority ofbtheir products and love them...they are a solid company that has spent a vast amount of money providing benefits to all of us...

The difference is that im not under the delusion that they really care about me...they are run by brilliant businessmen and that is the end of it...im grateful for the services they :confused:provide me...but at the end of the day...if it stops making money they will not think twice about taking that service from me...

Google wants to protect Android from being ruined by some. How about we wait until they flex this muscle at least once to see how they use it before we judge them for it.

And my point is I don't think they will flex their muscles in this case...

......oh and they certainly didn't have anything to do with the locked bootloader on HTC's last few devices. If they did, then why would HTC have given out the keys to unlock them just days later?
this is so comical...you have literally done nothing but put words in my mouth through your entire post...what I said was that according to Google's supposed veto power...such a thing would have to be approved...I never said anything about Google having a hand in it...nothing of the sort...

Really...if you're going to personallythat attack me and use foul language that has no place on these forums then you really should take better care in actually reading my posts and what I have typed...because in reality your whole post was a waste of time considering that I barely said any of the things you claim I have said...

I don't expect many to agree with my stance...this is an Android forum...its bound to be filled with people that hold Google on a pedestal...I love my X and Android...its the best mobile deviceand OS I've ever used...for thethe foreseeable future i dont see myself buying anything but Android devices.. because its so good...but I have no time for blind fanboyish loyalties...I just want the best for me...I don't have to pretend Google is my friend to enjoy their products or support them...

Soooooooooo...what does everyone think the likelihood of he banhammer being brought in on rooted users? I mean, I've never used the wireless tether and haven't had any issues with warranty replacements. It would suck if the big v dropped my phone for anything, I don't give them problems. I know what I'm doing voids my warranty--i am 100% okay with that. Tethering? Sure make people pay. Why not? I don't use it anyway. Just don't drop me for tinkering with my phone. I will even stick with a dev phone if that's what they want, just as soon as big red gets one.

Give me a phone to mess with, the service on which to run it, and I will remain a faithful customer without any complaints. What I do and **** up is my own business.

This all makes me sad. There's so much more I want to learn. Plus this community is awesome, I'd hate to see it take a hit like this.

Let's not speculate on how they will use the info. If you don't tether, fine. We should discuss the merits of it but trying to think of what Big red will do is kinda futile.

Jesus H. Christ! Why is everyone on each others nuts? Chill the F out. We all don't want this to happen so how far are we going to get attacking each other when we should be attacking Verizon and Googles inboxes and phone lines! Get a grip people!
have ben saying this all morning ,,,its exhausting and sure i can walk away and pay no mind but why do that and walk away from a community i as well as so many others have spent countless hours days and weeks and some years frequenting and let others slander others etc,,,as i stated earlier everyone is upset but lets not also forget that this is supposed to be a FUN HOBBY in which we enjoy ourselves and this is a phone folks so lets all calm down lol

I think...

- Phones will become more and more locked down...the Nexus line very well remain the only source of phones that are completely AOSP with unlocked bootloaders...

- VZW wont ban anyone for being rooted...they want your money...they may monitor...and add charges for those bypassing features like tethering...but I don't see them kicking anyone off their network...rooting IS LEGAL...

- I see VZW becoming much more strict in regards to warranty repairs/replacements...possibly keeping a database of "flagged" phones as having been rooted...

-the day of the custom ROM is fading...the vast majority of devs will stick to the Nexus phones...

Okay. While that all still sucks, its not as bad. If I have to stick with dev phones to play then so be it. And if they let me continue to play as long as I'm not evading their extra charges, I'm okay with that too.

Im on the same page. I for a fact love trying out new roms and such. If I have to leave Verizons empire to do that then the Nexus will be my next stop.....so what network is that on again?

Absolutely!
The devs are already chanting the buy Nexus maxim already. I just hope this doesn't become a case of "four legs bad, two legs better". Sigh.

When I saw this article appear on MDW I thought it important to post here because I feel like our little piece of the community has many intelligent people to rationally discuss this important topic. All though I expected the topic to be strongly discussed I did not think it would start to get personal between posters. There is nothing wrong with having strong feelings but it is wrong to attack other posters. Lets keep it civil please.

According to P3 all Samsung devices will be coming with encrypted bootloaders...

My concern is that when im standing in the store looking at two phones...and the current Nexus is clearly the inferior device...

Out of curiosity...with all the Moto/Big Red hate right now...

What happens when the Targa is the next Nexus device, and its only available on VZW??

If the Targa is the next Nexus device, I'll buy it as long as Google stands behind it like they did the Nexus and Nexus S. And although I'm frustrated with Moto/VZW, ATT is far lower than either of them in my eyes.

Edit: I doubt the Targa is Nexus though. I've seen pictures that show it running MotoBLUR.

I love you all! Yes like really love you lol

I'm so glad Honeycomb wasn't released on a phone, someone might have got cut :)

This has been a crazy couple of days to say the least. Lots of sand rubbing people raw. It's a phone !

I want Apex on GB! :)

Exactly. We're on the same team, remember? :) Additionally, I would like to add that if you see a something posted of personal nature (attack, or anything that violates the zero tolerance policy) just hit the "report!" button and a mod will review it.

Thanks!

Metfanant, your sig is excellent. I for one will be keeping my rooted phone with my GB I know I killed my warranty as soon as I hit "root" Tethering...don't use it. I am also glad P3droid gave us all this news, he is the messenger people need to stop hating him via twitter.

p.s. I am drunk.

Yarr!

Gawd, I spend two days in the hospital and all hell breaks loose.
First, I'd like to say this: The idea of carriers "tracking" everything you do has been around since the 70's, people were made to believe that if they hooked up cable TV without paying for it, they were being tracked and would get a HUGE bill and a massive fine from the carrier. (never happened)
For years, people have had the idea that credit cards and paper money have tracking devices in them to report back to the IRS where you spend your money.
has anyone heard of snopes?
Seriously, if the small number of people who are tethering is causing such a strain on the network, why is the network so weak? This number is very small in comparison to those who do nothing with their phones short of texting or voice.
Well, I think Verizon owes me a lot of money now, cause if they ARE, in fact, watching me like the Orwellian "Big Brother", why aren't they sending me a refund check for all the time I spend on WI-FI from my home computer?
The sky is NOT falling, and there is nO third shoe. Scare tactics work well on the uninformed and fearful.
(stepping from soap box, walking away....)
