@droid_life wish you had not jumped on that buzz, half his article is right, other half is very wrong.

and then the reply to me:

@BigShotProducR Multiple verizon contacts, some high ups, call BS, I was provided proof (that I Was told not to distro :/)

While I had a feeling that it was all BS I'm still skeptical/can see them implementing something along the lines of what was said.

I feel it's coming -- they may already have tracked us. But I *think* actually taking action is something that is coming down the road. Perhaps once LTE is nationwide? Just My 3 Cents.

Why the hell would they want the crack down. Hell half of them if not more are probably rooted and rommed or running a different kernel and or tethering for fricks sakes... They would be screwed as well.:p

Unless there is a way around it for them which I am sure there is for the higher ups.....

So, when it really comes down to it, no one knows anything.

In that case, I am still going to enjoy GB and just add a tethering account to my plan. If I am flagged, so be it.

That seems like a smart plan. If you use tethering -- get the plan for it.

I played with tethering right after I rooted to see it work and show my wife. But I've never really needed it. I thought I would, but never did.

I'm sticking with GB and rooted. Flagged? If so, damage is already done.

You have to be rooted, and this won't help if they start tracking.

if they start tracking??...they already are...and have been...

So whats the overall concensus? is everyone keeping root? SBFback to stock? What seems to be the best course of action at this point?

staying rooted on GB leak for now...ive done nothing to cost VZW extra money...i don't tether, and ive never tried to return my rooted phone for a replacement/repair...

rooting is legal...if they try to take me to court they will lose...

I don't see unlocked bootloaders happening in the long run (at least on VZW and ATT). Android being open doesn't mean that we should be able to run non-approved firmware on the carriers' networks and even though I dislike that, I can't fault them for that stance.
correct, unlocked bootloaders are going to become less and less common...and while i disagree with the practice i completely understand it...

Like Outlaw said, they have a right to protect their intellectual property. However, when we root the phones, we have access to every file on the device. So the obvious answer is to forbid/prevent root/adb and that's probably the endgame. In the end, we'll be forced to choose between Motorola's webtop and other inevitable features or having the freedom to develop our own roms, kernals, themes, optimizations etc...
absolutely...the only thing they cannot do is forbid rooting...because its protected by the DMCA under the mobile device exception...

In the heat of the moment, I decided to never buy a non-Nexus phone. But lets face the truth; eventually, stock Android (and even CyanogenMod) will pale in comparison to Sense (it already does in some areas) and BLUR and Touchwiz too (eventually). Maybe, the best we can hope for is that Google will somehow prevent (with whatever leverage they have) the inevitable fragmentation that's likely to occur (by virtue of the time it takes to dev these features) and somehow ensure that we, at the very least, have some options/tinkering available to us.

i agree that Sense and Blur are getting better and better..and will begin to challenge the custom ROMS for features...

my biggest concern however, and i mentioned this earlier is that im always going to want the best hardware as well as software...

i dread the day when my choice is between a unlocked Nexus device, and a locked down Moto device that is easily superior on the hardware front...

as much as im going to want the Nexus for the openness, knowing i bought an inferior product on the hardware front will haunt me...

@Metfan: You are right. I am with Google NOW because what they are doing aligns itself with MY interests (as a consumer). When it doesn't, I'll complain. I've said it before and I'll say it again; OEMs, manufacturers etc... have enough money, lawyers and will to worry about their own interests. We as consumers should worry about ours and hope to (at least try) meet somewhere near the middle.

right...fanboy attitudes don't get you anywhere...

If all of this was going on for months and months, why then was a pre rooted GB leak released by this same person? Thats just a question now, so do not flame. I just read all of this over the last few days and it seemed weird that the timeline of events went back so far, and during that same time things were being released and still are. If flashing to GB that was rooted put you on this "list" that Big Red is tracking on, why was it released at all?
according to P3 you were on the list if you rooted your phone back on Froyo as well...this is not a new development with GB...

Oh my god! I just finished reading all 300 posts here!!! That's the last time I don't check into the forums over the weekend....hahaha Had too much hockey/baseball to pay attention to.

My thoughts...
-Just like with the petition to Moto, They don't care about our small community that responsibly handles rooting/romming/theming...it's the people that cost them money (by not acting responsibly) that cause them concern.
correct

-ALL OF THIS, so far, is speculation.
yes

-if you don't think you have been tracked all along (not just since GB but since my old ass StarTac) then I have to beachfront property in Arizona I'd like you to take a look at.
correct

-We all knew this was coming...Go back to our conversations about AT&T and their data plans.
you bet

-Google is complicit in this, and I do think they are beholden to VZW/Moto especially b/c they wouldn't have a mobile division for Android if it wasn't for them. No one touched the original Android devices on T-Mo, and they had to pull the OG Nexus b/c no one was buying it. (people forget their history very quickly) I don't say this insinuating at all that Google needs Android, but it's still a large revenue stream.
you bet...Moto and VZW are very much responsible for the popularity of Android...

what exactly is this in reference to? do we have some more context for this??

No, rooting may not be illegal but Verizon can stop providing service to you, and without that, it's just a $200 paper weight,.

copied from P3's Twitter:

TBH app has been removed from the market it violates 2 provisions according to Google. We will be moving to a new platform for delivery

1. Create unpredictable network usage that has an adverse impact on a user's service charges or a Authorized Carrier's network.

2. Knowingly violate an Authorized Carrier's terms of service for allowed usage.

The tether apps will be gone soon too I think.

I have a feeling if all the crooks using free tether never did, this wouldn't be a problem. It's about stealing data and hurting Verizons bottom line, not about some users uninstalling bloatware or themes.

can you find me the line in your contract that says root is disallowed??...if not they will hear from my lawyer should they shut off my contract...and they will then be turning my service back on...

It begins...

one more chance for Google to stand up for us has come...and gone...

its the tethering...

Their pockets and lawyers are deeper than yours. That in and of itself puts you at a HUGE disadvantage.

I'm not arguing but I just wonder if retaining a lawyer for something as trivial as a PHONE and "allowing" root is worth it? Even if I did have the means to have an attorney on speed dial, it's not worth it and I love doing other things with my money. Buying motorcycles, hookers and beer are more fun to me than fighting a multibillion dollar corporation over a 200 subsidized phone. Just my opinion of course.

Edit: I was typing too fast and didn't mean to let the hooker secret out ;)

No you won't and no they won't.

Correct if I'm wrong as this is a question but if we download files from tbh app from servers for the app downloads does that render the app useless?

disadvantage? possibly...but not when my actions are protected under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act..and THEY are the ones in breach of contract...not me...

ask Steve Jobs what happened when he tried to challenge jailbreaking in court...

No you won't and no they won't.

my actions are protected under the DMCA, and they have breached the contract we both agreed to...i have complete legal control of that case...

Best SBF back to 2.2.1 people get out while you can!

;)
why?...we are already on the list...and were on it before Gingerbread...

Metfanant is 100% correct ,,,,I actually just turned in a college essay on this very topic about 5 min ago and I'm no expert nor claiming I am but obviously researched it a little and rooting /jailbreak is legal

Yes you do, and you have complete control of the $3,000 retainer you will need to just get the case started, if you can find a competent attorney to take it on.

When they push the update if your not on the 2.2.1 it won't take and alert V.

Come and gone? Google knows Verizon and the other carriers are going to start sticking it to those consumers who are tethering illegally by either charging us overages on our bills, or possibly even suing us to make examples out of us like the music companies did (which btw, I thought you were against illegal tethering after reading your latest posts?). So they're going to zap those apps off the market so we can't get ourselves into trouble.

Hey, someone has to save us from ourselves. :D

Hey, someone has to save us from ourselves. :D

I suggest you download all the tethering apps you can get your hands on, as they will be gone soon, if not already.
