Root Is LG an easy root?

Nevermind I had just had to switch it from MTP and internet back forth 10 times. ( counted and it just rebooted my phone into the recovery screen. I got the das boot screen and rebooted. I should be all set now.

MARKFM would you mind sharing your must have root apps?

I just installed chainfire SU, so I should be rooted. You should be able to install and run it of your not rooted.
 
I use lbe security master to control app privileges and block ads, plus a WiFi tether, plus a backup program that also simplifies freezing some system apps.

I'll likely also use the xposed framework which requires root, there is a cool g3 tweakbox set that I definitely want to be able to use (It requires xposed)

SDfix Kit Kat writable MicroSD, as 4.4 tries to lock the card down too much.

Add: busybox, handy widgets needed by other apps

Nothing too heavy duty :)
 
Thanks, I am going through it now trying to find all the bloatware. There is so much of it! I I am guessing anything that says verizon can go lol

Best bet imo is using Titanium Backup to freeze all the likely suspects. That was if things get instable, you can undo it if needed.
 
Ya I jumped the gun a little bit and just uninstalled them. I should have just froze them, that would have been smarter. Anyone having trouble getting Foxfi/pdanet to work? That was the whole reason I rooted and its still not working.
 
From another forum, it sounds like foxfi has issues, though pdanet can be used in usb mode.

Someone on dad has posted a hotspot apk, previously used for the g2, that definitely works for WiFi. It's the first thing I installed this morning.
 
Thanks, I appreciate it. I think I might need to factory reset and see if I can get the verizon apps back, but I dont think that will work. I deleted the verizon mobile hotspot app. I tried the link above and no dice, still cant get tether to work. Wonder if the deleted program is the issue.
 
If you would not mind holding my hand one more time I will send you a case of beer or something for birthday. I removed the Verizon hotspot application using titanium. I thought that was the reason why I couldn't get foxfi to work, even when frozen it kept trying to over ride it. That was my theory anyway. I guess that is one of the do not removed apps. It is my understanding the only way I can get that APP back is by re flashing the rom. The APK and ODEX files seem to still be in the system/app folder when I looked though. Any thoughts?

Someone else needed them , I parked a set on Google drive.

With Root Explorer (or Total Commander - I find TC easier to use) you can shovel the files back in, then set their file properties back to 644.

In TC, you long press on the file name, then select Properties from the drop-down list that appears. Click on the permissions and it opens a little window. Set the file to rw-R-r (644).

If the files actually are there, maybe it is just their permissions not set properly.

The hotspot mod really does work, though when you copy the file into apps, again you then have to use root explorer to set the file privileges. When I view the hacked file in, I left it's name alone, just reset permissions.
 
Ok Thanks, when I go into system/app I see these two already there. So I am not sure what uninstalled just the subscription prompt? In TI I saw the verizon mobile hotspot and I uninstalled that, without making a backup like an ***hat. I will try it again using the instructions on the forum see if I can get the hack to work. Thanks man.
 
The subscription prompt should go away if you remove (backup to another directory) the two original hotspot files, and put the one new hotspot apk file in that directory.

Then when you run the hotspot so, you should get tethering without the nag prompt.

The only downside is that you have to reinput the link name and/or password each time you restart the hotspot on the phone.

I expect this mod will get updated in the near future, for g3 - it is a reuse of a g2 mod.
 
I guess the better question is how do you remove them or back them up to another directory? Root Explorer does not have a remove or backup option it just has a copy or move. I was just moving the files to storage directory. I guess that is wrong?
 
I copy the old files to a directory I created, then delete them in the original directory.

Then put the new hotspot apk in the apps directory.

To run it, go into settings on your phone. Select More in the first group, the one for things like WiFi and Bluetooth. In the expanded lust you will see an entry called mobile hotspot. Open that up, select setup. Set whatever ssid and password you want, uncheck the "Broadcast ssid" box, and press Save.

You will be back in the main mobile hotspot window, set it to on.

You should see a little wireless symbol in the upper left corner of the notification bar. If you don't, go back under setup and check the"Broadcast SSID" box.

Once it is up it is solid, works well. The glitches should get fixed pretty soon with any luck.
 
That file just bypasses provisioning on the stock tethering function. It runs from settings, tethering & networks. Unless you still have unlimited data, you won't need this since anyone on a tiered plan can already tether...at the risk of exceeding your data allowance.
 
The directory was just to hold those two original hotspot files, a backup of them in case the tweaked hotspot file didn't work. I created a directory, copied the files to it, deleted the original copies in apps, then copied the tweaked hotspot apk into the apps folder.
 
Took another stab at it, still no dice. Deleting the verizon mobile hotspot must have changed something. When I go into the setting: more: mobile hotspot: turn it to on and nothing happens. I click on it and nothing happens so I cant open anything to set it up. I pull down the top menu and try turning the hotspot on from that and it just stays black, cant even click on it. I think I straight broke it. I did everything else correctly, double checked the permissions for all 3 files, I even download TC and did it with that just to make. created a folder in the systems directory just to store the 2 files in as well. Oh well.

Hey guys. I've got a G3, came from a GNex that I never rooted out of fear. As such, I never really looked into the advantages of rooting. Can you guys give me the cliffsnotes version of the benefit of rooting? (i.e. can I do more things with it, make it faster, etc...)
Obviously, I know if I screw it up I can brick the phone and that is why I can really hesitant to do it, but if there is reason enough to do it, I'm willing to take the plunge.

Also, not totally related, I'm thinking of rooting the GNex now that I don't NEED it anymore. If I brick it, I won't feel as bad. Might that be a good way to go - test my rooting skills on the Gnex then do it on the G3 once I'm more confident?

TIA for any help/advice/suggestions.
 
It's a shame that you didn't root the gnex when you were using. It has amazing support and ROM support. Rooting gives you full access to your phone. It gives you access to apps that you can't otherwise get. It sometimes allows custom ROMs or themes. I'm sure someone more advanced can expand on it. But crack flashing ROMs was just plain fun to explore what essentially feels like a totally different phone on the gnex.
