Root [MetroPCS & T-Mobile] New system update

I've got t-mobile, unrooted F3 phone-- I did the update last night & now I have no internal storage... some things show like I do have it then others show like its not there at all, for example when I go to settings/storage it shows that there is 0.00b available, and 236 mb is used by apps. If I go into settings/apps it says 430 mb used, 871 mb free. When I plug it into my computer it shows a thumbnail for internal storage but nothing in it. calls work, messaging works, I deleted everything I could- the couple apps I downloaded, cleared caches, call logs, and messages I don't know what else to do other than a hard reset... any ideas?

That is odd. You could try to use a ES file explorer app (or similar) to see if you can copy files to the internal storage /storage/sdcard0 (AKA /sdcard). and /storage/external_SD for microSD card. It could just be a bug that it's not reporting available space correctly. Since you're unrooted, should call T-Mobile support so they track this issue officially.

1. With a root browser, go to the /cache dir and delete the update zip.
2. Open the phone dialer and type 3845#*659#, this will open the hidden menu.
3. Now go to Wi-Fi Setting-LG > OTA Setting and press disable.

This should disable the OTA updates

I can confirm that this works on a T-Mobile F3 as well.

My phone was rooted with motochopper. It's all stock except for root and for the fact that I deleted some pre-installed apps. I tried for a second time to update. This time it's clear that the update aborts early. My phone stayed on the old firmware and retained root.

OTAs (at least on Nexus devices) typically do pre-patch checks. Many of the files in the OTA.zip are *.p patch files, so would fail if the original files were missing. Should be able to work around them by restoring system apps before applying the OTA.zip.

Another way to update is to use the LG Mobile Support Tool, probably wipes your device though.

Hope i'm not thread crashing... but I just accidentally updated my LG F3 with the new update. Im not rooted or anything, just a regular factory phone. So it also updated google maps for me, which I don't want, and now I cannot Uninstall GMaps at all. New google maps is driving me crazy.. sorry about the pun.

I have tried factory reset and hard reset ( volume down, home and power button).. both booted back up with updated settings.

Any ideas or work arounds.? How can I get back to original phone settings?

Root, titanium backup, backup maps, uninstall maps, find older maps.apk and install. Oh and turn off "update auyomatically " in play store.
 
So.. I just got prompted to update again. Phone Rebooted, the install began and aborted mid install and phone rebooted again. Still on ----a. Still have root.

I wonder if it is root of custom re overt that is crashing this.

Is the update worth it? I am close to not caring that I stay on ----a.
 
When I had the update, personally, I didn't see any difference. Just all depends on what region you are in. I recently restored a backup, so my update is gone :)

On a side note, the instructions I posted earlier on disabling the ota by hidden menu may not always work. Here is another way of disabling ota updates and will stop the annoying popup.

1. Delete the update zip that was downloaded to "/cache" dir.
2. Then browse to "/etc/security" and rename "otacerts.zip" to "otacerts.zip.bak".
3. Reboot phone.

The LG support tool reports that I have the latest firmware installed even though I'm still on the T-Mobile "a" version. I think the only way for me to get the update would be to use the T-Mobile kdz file and revert my phone back to stock.

Don't you have to have root to restore a backup that overwrites system files? If so, how did you root after the OTA update? I'm waiting on a confirmed root method (motochopper broken after OTA) before updating.
 
Yup soft bricked this morning. Woke up this morning to an update, should have waited till I got the laptop back. My only backup is on my external SD and the clockwork mod recovery won't mount it. :) owell gotta wait

I've done all that and I'm still getting the popup.

edit- I long-pressed on the notification and "app info" popped up. Tapping on that showed the app info for Google Services Framework. I unchecked the "show notifications" box for the app and the popup went away. Restarted the phone to see if it would come back but the setting held.
I'm not sure if this will disable any other notifications that might be important, so I'd still like to be able to turn off only the system update and leave everything else alone.

edit#2- The notification is gone but I'm still getting the popup.

I have the opposite problem, I went through the OTA, it rebooted into stock recovery but the progress went half way and rebooted again, I checked version info and Im still on old firmware ( probably because I have removed system apps). My notification is gone. I have restored system apps and want to try again, even checked OTA in settings manually, but it's not coming thru. I'll just wait a few days for the carrier to push it again.

You could try removing the /cache/<OTA>.zip file and go thru with it expecting failure to get rid of the nag pop up.

Had the same problem: Tried installing update, it failed, no longer prompted me there was an update available.

To get the update notification back:

Goto: Apps, All Apps, Google Services Framework.

Clear Data.

That's it. You could try restarting after but for me it took like 1 minute and the update popped back up.

Now I'm going to re-enable all my disabled apps and try installing the update again. I have a rooted T-Mobile F3, so I hope root sticks around, but I am hella interested in improved 4G reception... which maybe this update does? IDK.

It worked (re-enabling system apps then installing update).

Perhaps, I did delete the zip file already.
I haven't seen the popup again since my last post so maybe it is gone.

OK sure. Haven't noticed anything yet except for the 4G LTE icon being different. Hopefully the battery/4G improvements are real.

I WAS able to get root back using Kingo. Tried Impactor first but that failed. Kingo seemed shady (the download took forever) but when it was finally installed it took maybe 2 minutes... easy.
 
Yeah I'll be interested to hear everyone's feedback on this as well. I'm currently satisfied with the phone as it is, no complaint about the battery life and 4G/LTE has generally been good in my area or wherever I've gone.
You never know what else they may be sneaking in there without telling us.

A good way to know is if someone hasn't taken the update yet but gotten the notification, it means it is downloaded. Why not OPEN the ota.zip in /cache and see what's in it?
